CHRIS NOWINSKI
Chris Nowinski is co-founder and executive
director of the Sports Legacy Institute
(SLI), a non-profit organization dedicated
to solving the sports concussion crisis
through education, policy, and research.
He also serves as co-director of the BU CTE
Center.
Nowinski also serves on the NFL Players Association
Mackey-White TBI Research Committee, the Ivy League
Concussion Committee, Positive Coaching Alliance National
Advisory Board, and as a consultant to Major League
Lacrosse. He is a Ph.D. candidate in Behavioral
Neuroscience at Boston University School of Medicine.
Chris’ interest in brain trauma stems from personal
experience. An All-Ivy defensive tackle for the Harvard
University football team, after graduation, he began
working for the life sciences consulting firm Trinity Partners,
LLC. While there he decided to explore his passion for
professional wrestling, and enrolled in wrestling school at
night. Eighteen months later, in 2002, he debuted on
WWE’s flagship program Monday Night RAW.
Chris suffered a serious concussion in June, 2003, but due
to a lack of understanding, was not honest about his
symptoms and continued to wrestle and work out for five
weeks while symptomatic. He developed post-concussion
syndrome and was forced to retire. Chris realized that this
lack of awareness among athletes, coaches, and even
medical professionals not only cost him his career, abut also
threatened the health and well-being of athletes of all ages.

Christine Finnegan, MS, is a Music therapist in the Adjunctive Therapy Department and Centennial Medical Center.

Kristen King, PhD, CCC-SLLP, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology and an Adjunct professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University
of Tennessee Health Science Center. She investigates communication and swallowing disorders, which arise secondary to traumatic brain injury, stroke, neurologic disease, and dementias in
both children and adults. Her primary research interest involves the investigation of hemispheric processing and neurocognitive skills for linguistic processes in individuals following traumatic
brain injury
Cindy Malawey, DPT, is the owner and clinician of Therapy in Motion Inc., an orthopedic and neurological practice, in Brentwood, TN. She worked at St. Johns Hospital in Santa Monica,
California, before moving to Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside, CA, where she began her neuro- developmental treatment (NDT) training in 1997. She became a Neuro-IFRAH™ instructor in
2004 (an approach originated by Waleed Al-Oboudi for individuals with lesions at the brainstem and above i.e. stroke and brain injury).
Mike Malawey, DPT, is the owner and clinician of Therapy in Motion Inc., an orthopedic and neurological practice in Brentwood, TN. Prior to his work with Therapy in Motion, Inc, he worked
for a private hospital in San Diego California for 8 years in the orthopedic department, followed by opening Malawey Physical Therapy, in San Diego North County for the purpose of providing
one-on-one care without use of aides or assistants. He has recently developed and launched a web-based program called Web Physical Therapy Today, which provide regimes to address
common musculoskeletal problems.
Tim Urbin, PhD, MBA, is an Assistant Professor and Clinical Psychologist at East Tennessee State University’s Quillen College of Medicine. He completed his degrees in Psychology at the
Universities of Illinois and Oklahoma and a MBA also from the University of Illinois. He is a veteran of the USAF and the Army National Guard, and his career has focused on providing training
and clinical services in neuropsychology, behavioral medicine, and rehabilitation psychology.
