LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
ALABAMA LIONS HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP FORUM
**NEW**
The Alabama Lions are sponsoring the 6th Annual Alabama Lions High School Leadership Forum for rising high
school students in grades 10, 11, 12 (current 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students) and who are ages 15-18 years old. The
Forum is a top tier three-day leadership adventure held June 19 - 21, 2015 at Troy University's campus. Included in the
program are keynote speakers on leadership topics, hand on leadership exercises, physical challenges, fellowship, and
fun. Outstanding delegates are recognized and college scholarships awarded to elite delegates. The application is
available at www.alhslf.org with a registration deadline of May 22, 2015. The cost to attend is $150.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP COUNCIL - RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama is looking for high school students who are rising juniors or seniors
(current 10th and 11th graders) to serve on the 2015/16 Student Leadership Council. Applications are available online
at www.RMHCA.org. To complete the on-line application, click on "Volunteer" and "Student Leadership Council".
Any additional application requirements will also be listed. Interested students must apply by May 15, 2015 and
attend a Volunteer Orientation on May 19th from 5:30-7:30pm. For more information contact Stephanie Langford

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
EXTEND THE DREAM STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP
Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC) initiated Extend the Dream Student Scholarships to
recognize and reward deserving students. This scholarship is awarded based on financial need, academic
achievement and community service. Awards are in the amount of $1,000 and are not renewable. The Extend the
Dream Student Scholarship is provided through funds from SACAC. Applicants must be current high school seniors
graduating from a public, private, parochial high school, or home school, located in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida,
Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, or the Caribbean. Applicant must be
accepted by and plan to attend an accredited, non-proprietary, technical, community or four-year school located in the
above mentioned states. Student must have at least a 2.75 GPA (grades 9-12 cumulative). Applicants must
have a financial need, demonstrate a commitment to community service, social justice issues, and/or
leadership qualities. For more information or an application, please see Mrs. Andrea Smith in the Guidance
Center. The application deadline is May 15, 2015.
MISS ALABAMA TEEN USA
The Miss Alabama Teen USA pageant, Troy University, Lindenwood University, and New York Film Academy join
together to make scholarships available! Any Miss Alabama Teen USA contestant who is a high school senior and
meets the academic qualification requirements (see below) will be eligible to receive one of two scholarships to Troy
University. The winner will receive a fabulous prize package, which includes a full academic scholarship to
Lindenwood University in Missouri, as well as the prestigious New York Film Academy. The Miss Alabama Teen USA
pageant will be held at the Montgomery Performing Arts Center. This year's pageant takes place on November 6 & 7,
2015. Miss Alabama Teen USA should not only be externally beautiful, but also a bright and articulate young lady who
will represent the school and community with pride. Young ladies between the ages of 14 & 19 are eligible to submit
an application by visiting www.missalabamausa.com and apply online.

HIGHLANDS COLLEGE
Highlands College provides students with practical leadership training that will prepare them to launch a successful
future in vocational ministry or the career field. Interested students and their parents should plan on visiting one of
Highlands College Preview Days. The date is: May 3rd. If you would like to attend a Preview Day, register today at

UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA - HUNTSVILLE
UAH invites prospective students and their parents to visit during their Open House event. Mark your calendar for

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
7th ANNUAL FLEA MARKET (Summer volunteer opportunity) **NEW**
The Women of Briarwood Church will host its 7th Annual Flea Market this summer. This year, the proceeds
will benefit Urban Hope Community Church in Fairfield, and the Women's Ministry truly cannot do it
without the help of high school students. Flea Market will be held July 24 & 25, but it will take all week to
prepare. High School students have helped the last several years by receiving donated items, sorting and
pricing. Teen age boys helped move tables, chairs and clothing racks. On sale days, students will help
move items to vehicles and clean-up. Please contact Christian Terrell if interested in volunteering or for

SUMMER PROGRAMS
DESIGN DISCOVERY Mississippi State University's School of Architecture is offering an eight-day summer workshop that is intended to
answer many of the questions about design and architecture. The major goal of the workshop is to simulate the
information, skill, and intensity required for a design education, while providing a clear insight into the practice of
architecture. Admission into Design Discovery is open to high school age students (16 and above) and incoming
college freshmen who are interested in the field of architecture and/or other related design fields. The workshop will
be held June 5-June 12, 2015. For more information or an application, visit www.caad.msstate.edu/designdiscovery. The deadline to apply is June 1, 2015.
CAREER EXPLORATIONS IN ARCHITECTURE
Tulane University's School of Architecture will host "Career Explorations in Architecture", which is a summer
program. High school students who will have completed their sophomore year and above, are eligible to apply. Students will spend 3-weeks in the School of Architecture exploring the ideas, methods, and issues of architecture. Lectures, field trips, discussions, critiques, and other activities will be featured. The program runs from July 12-31,

limited, so interested students are encouraged to apply early and before the June 1, 2015 deadline.
UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA CONTINUING STUDIES READING PROGRAMS
Reading programs are offered by the University of Alabama, College of Continuing Studies in partnership with the
Institute of Reading Development, for grades 9-12. Programs in Hoover and Vestavia Hills are available to help

SAMFORD UNIVERSITY - MINORITY YOUTH SCIENCE ACADEMY
The Minority Youth Science Academy at Samford University is a four-day residential program (June 28 - July 1)
offering college preparation and mentoring for outstanding minority high school students who aspire to careers in the
sciences. A limited number of rising 10th-12th grade (current 9th-11th grade) students will live and study at one of the

NYU SUMMER PROGRAMS
New York University is offering many summer program for high school students. Programs vary and run from
weekends to 6-weeks. Some of the programs offered are: Cyber Security Programs; Steinhardt Summer Art Intensive;
