Postdoctoral Research Associateship
The Yale Center for British Art (YCBA) is offering a one-year Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRA) position in
the Department of Paintings and Sculpture. The position is intended for a recent recipient of a PhD (degree granted
within the last three years) in any art-historical field. Demonstrated interest in European paintings and sculpture of the
seventeenth, eighteenth, or nineteenth centuries, especially British, is preferred but not required. The PhD must be in
hand by the time the position begins. The PRA will receive an annual salary of $45,000, plus standard Yale benefits.
Funding to allow the PRA to attend one professional conference, and modest travel funds for undertaking work on
behalf of the department as well as for personal research, as determined by the department head, will also be provided.
The PRA will report directly to the Curator of Paintings and Sculpture. Primary duties will consist of research associated
with the collection of paintings and sculpture and the exhibition program of the Center, including contributing to the
ongoing scholarly cataloguing of the collection, assisting with a major international loan exhibition overseen by the
department (on British art and the German courts in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries), assisting with the
reinstallation of the permanent collection of paintings and sculpture opening in the spring of 2016, and supporting the
research activities of the Curator. The PRA will be given one day a week to pursue research in his or her own areas of
specialization and is expected to develop a scholarly profile by giving talks, publishing, and engaging with the scholarly

general purpose
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work in support of all activities of the Department of Paintings and Sculpture.
Primary duties will consist of research associated with the collection of paintings and sculpture, and the exhibition
program of the Center, including cataloguing of the collection, assisting with exhibitions overseen by the department,
assisting with the reinstallation of the permanent collection, and supporting the research activities of the Curator of
Paintings and Sculpture. The position may be held for a one-year period.
essential duties
1. Work under the supervision of the Curator of Paintings and Sculpture to
catalogue and expand understanding of the collection of paintings and sculpture.
2. Undertake research and other duties related to a major international loan
exhibition overseen by the Department of Paintings and Sculpture.
3. Assist with researching and executing a full reinstallation of the permanent
collection of paintings and sculpture, to open in the spring of 2016.
4. Support the research of the Curator.
5. Participate in the Center’s intellectual life by attending lectures, colloquia, and symposia.
6. Pursue own research and publishing, with the view of developing a scholarly profile
(one day per week, or as agreed with the Curator, will be assigned for this purpose).
7. Occasionally teach for Yale University’s Department of the History of Art,
upon the mutual agreement of the department and the Center.

education and experience
PhD within the past three years (PhD must be in hand in order to take up the post).
1. Knowledge of current methods of art-historical research and analysis.
2. Interest in European painting and sculpture of the seventeenth, eighteenth,

3. Experience teaching art history at the college level, at least as a teaching assistant, preferred.
skills and abilities
1. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
2. Some computer skills (including ability to type and good knowledge of Word and PowerPoint)
3. Reading and basic spoken knowledge of at least one foreign language. German preferred.
4. Ability to coordinate complex projects and to work from own initiative when required.
