Happy summer, it is June after all.

I would love some quilts for the Kitsap Regional library. I will have forms to fill out at the June meeting when you
turn them in. I will return them to you after the display ends, the first part of August. I think this will be great advertisement for our guild.
Our guild depends on its members to volunteer. The last meeting we hit the motherload! I would like to thank Leslie
Stapleton for stepping up to the Hospice Chair position. Leslie works at the hospice and has volunteered to continue
as Chair, as long as she works at the hospice! Laura Jacobs graciously volunteered to machine quilt hospice quilts.
Drop her an email or call her, to make arrangements.
Debi Snyder stepped up to be the Membership Chair for next year; Barb and Lisa have offered to continue to Cochair the Fabric Exchange. Thank you to these three volunteers, as well.
Now, we are still looking for President(s)-Elect to serve as President(s) for the 2015-2016 fiscal year to round out
the Board. It’s a total of 3-years’ commitment (before-during-after). The Board holds 4 meetings a year.
I would love to work with a couple of people to have a fun picnic in August. Please let me know if you could help
with a game or decorations.

May Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by CoPresident Nancy Mathisrud. We have

Fabric Exchange—Barbara Seitz and Lisa Jowise
How to create texture and movement in your quilts? Consider geometrics. Squares, chevrons, hexies, circles, trapezoids, even
squigglies make your eye move across the design. You can see movement in the picture of squigglies on the Fabric Exchange
calendar. Geometrics also play up their floral neighbors nicely. Let’s see how many fat quarters we get to exchange in June.
We are continuing the red/white/blue split rail fence block to be donated for Quilts of Valor quilts; the pattern is on the website.
Many thanks to Bobbi Wodtli for offering to quilt one of the assembled tops. She also brought a very large piece of fabric for
backing plus some blocks she and friends made at a recent retreat. Our members are all generous ~ we collected an amazing 72
blocks at the May meeting. YAY! Can we top that in June?

Have you checked your calendar lately? Well...it's six months until Christmas, and the Guild Library has plenty of gift ideas
for you to make. There are books about Christmas quilts in many sizes, mantel/piano covers, stockings, tablet covers, table
toppers, bed toppers, and more. The new book being introduced for June fits right into this category. Fons and Porter have
compiled 34 quick designs for every season and skill level in Best of Fons & Porter Tabletop Quilts. If you buy or subscribe
to their magazine, you may have seen some of these designs already, and they are fun to make for gifts or yourself!
School is out for the summer, and many of you are going on summer trips to the beach, mountains, the USA, or, perhaps,
to a foreign country. Why not take a quilting mystery or two to read while you are relaxing? New this month are two books
from authors already in our library. Quilt Trip, by Elizabeth Craig, brings back retired art curator Beatrice Coleman in a
Southern quilting mystery. An elderly eccentric quilter gets murdered this time, tangling up Beatrice's plans in unexpected
ways.
Ocean Waves by Terri Thayer, takes place at a real location: Asilomar, CA. Quilt shop owner, Dewey Pellicano, hopes to mix
business with pleasure at the symposium, but a militant conference organizer, a notorious "ghost", a mysterious missing
woman, a stolen heirloom sewing box, and a mountain lion on the loose add up to trouble for her. Dewey must try to find
a pattern in this crazy quilt of a murder mystery.

Notes from the Many Hats of Ann Trujillo
Challenge Quilt
This years’ challenge is “This Great State of Washington. The size should be no smaller than 60” circumference, and no larger than
160” circumference, and can be any shape you like. Your entry must be an original, no commercial patterns, and should show or
portray something about our state that you love, find amusing, is memorable to you, or just would be fun to make into a quilt. We
encourage you to use at least 1 technique that is new to you in your quilt. Ann and Norma

Summer has arrived and I'm enjoying the flowers, mild temperatures, and warming sunshine that streams through my quilt
room window. I've just finished quilting and binding your spring marathon quilt tops, and with the addition of your May
meeting donations, I have 34 more quilts ready for delivery to Harrison Silverdale Birthing Center for their "at risk" babies.

Your participation in Cuddles is appreciated, and the need for baby quilts continues. Whether it's donating fabric or materials, sewing, quilting, binding quilts, or creating your own quilts from scratch, you can help us. Please check the website for
our program guidelines, or see me at the meetings for information, kits, patterns or labels. I can finish your pieced top as
well, so turn in your top or completed quilt so that I can facilitate its journey to that very special baby.

Blocks for Co-Presidents Nancy and Marilyn
It is a tradition to make blocks of their choice for our outgoing President(s). The following is what they have chosen, which
is the same block we made for Amy and Suzanne
Using batik fabrics, cut the following:
2 pieces 2-1/2" x 5-1/2" dark
2 pieces 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" dark
1 piece 1-1/2" x 3-1/2" light
Sew the 1-1/2" squares of the dark fabric to each end of the light rectangle. Press the fabric to the dark.
Sew the 2-1/2" x 5-1/2" dark strips to the top and bottom of the pieced strip.
Make two of these for Nancy and two for Marilyn. Sign just one block for each. Some of the blocks without the signature
could have the dark in the center and light around.

Thanks to all of you who have made the 2014 Challenge block and to those who took more kits. Please sign the blocks on the
front, first name only + “Washington”. They will go to other states to be included in their quilts – like a friendship quilt from the
US. We will get our own pile of blocks to make into quilts. Deadline to turn blocks into me is the July meeting (July 28 th). You can
also mail them to the address on the instruction sheet (her deadline is July 31 st). Ann Trujillo will pick up blocks at the June
meeting.
Final Note—Mary Ann Hooker
Are you interested in holding an office, chairing a committee or hosting one of the annual parties in the next fiscal
year? Nancy has asked current office holders if they will be continuing their position—there are openings. We need
someone, or a pair of women, who are willing to serve as President Elect. Jaxine and I will only stay in the office of
President for one year. You will be required to serve 3 years on the Board. A couple of years ago, we came very close
to dissolving the Guild, when no one stepped up.
It would be super great if all the social events positions are covered by the August meeting, as well (Summer Picnic,
Christmas Party, Christmas Blocks, etc.). It feels like we’re always asking for volunteers, and it’s not comfortable for
anyone. But remember, Kitsap Quilters is only as dynamic as the willingness of its member to participate.
