Welcoming Wallenda
After word leaked out
that daredevil Nik Wallenda plans to execute his
next wirewalking spectacular in North Buffalo,
merchants, residents and
commuters got up on their
high horses about its potential impact on their
businesses and comings
and goings. A formal announcement is expected
this coming Wednesday.
Peace Bridge neighbors
were especially on edge,
as the span represents the
highest point in the area,
making it the likeliest terminus for a trek above the
raging Niagara River, to
(or from) the International
Railroad Bridge.
Rocket Man has learned,
though, that the politicallysensitive daredevil dismissed any such location,
preferring not to be associated with any land mass
known as “Squaw Island.”
“I tell you with authority,” said Hi Walker, spokes-
man for the globally-known
risk-taker, “that Mr. Wallenda is very sensitive to
the needs and feelings of
this great land’s first citizens. He’d rather slide into
eternity on a rusty razor
than in any way perpetuate racial and ethnic stereotypes. Besides that,
they give us a terrific deal
on gas purchases.”

it might not be the highest

that Wallenda would decline this routing, as well,

walking over Hertel, I
thought they wanted me
to jump a Hurdle,” he said.
“Anybody, even Joe Bortz,

One common speculation has Wallenda putting
his foot down as a feature of
the Italian Festival. “I only
hope I won’t be distracted
by aromas,” he said. “The
spray from Niagara Falls I
could handle, but the smell
of good pasta sauce, that’s a
challenge. And the higher it
gets, the better it smells.”
Otherwise, Hertel Avenue could be closed for a
week or more while Wallenda and his crew install
and run safety checks
on his equipment. Police
would make special arrangements for customers
wishing to visit the offices
of the Buffalo Rocket and
as a courtesy, Wallenda
himself would make airborne deliveries of Johnny’s
Meat, using carefully chosen delicious homemade
sausages as the weights on
his balancing pole.
Lovely as a Wallenda
wirewalk would be in promoting North Buffalo,
many complications remain. One can be identified
by checking next Wednesday’s date, and another by
carefully writing down the
first letter of each paragraph in this dispatch.

County Clerk Chris Jacobs wants to caution all
Erie County motorists to
watch for a misleading solicitation that looks like an
official notice from the Department of Motor Vehicles. The letter’s return address
is from the “Motor Vehicle
Division” and contains an
accurate description of the
make and model of your
vehicle. It also states “Immediate Response To This
Notice Required.” “I want to inform vehi-
cle owners in Erie County
that the entities marketing such requests are not
at all related to the New
York State Department
of Motor Vehicles or the
Erie County Auto Bureau,
which is operated by my
office,” said County Clerk
Jacobs. “If you receive one
of these notices you should
ignore it.”

Remembering Sister Julia Feltz
On October 7, 1940, the
Sisters of St. Joseph rejoiced that Henry and Augusta Feltz, gave their loving daughter, Julia, to the
Sisters of St. Joseph in Buffalo. Julia was a native of
Fort Wayne, Indiana but felt
strongly drawn to the spirit
and works of the Sisters of
St. Joseph in Buffalo.
In August of 1946, Julia became Sister Mary
Ernest; a name which became associated with giving, loving, and reaching
out to all who came into
her presence. Her leadership, particularly on the
West Side at Nativity parish, became synonymous
with total commitment to
the Church, the school and
family life. No project was
too great. During these
years, the sisters returned
to their Baptismal names
and Sister Mary Ernest became Sister Julia.
Sister Julia was appointed Superior and Principal
of Nativity School in 1964.
The closing of the school in
1981 was a very sad and
arduous task for the parish
and the children at that
time. However, Sister Julia
did not abandon her people.
She chose schools for her
teachers and pupils and
sent them forth prepared

parish schools. Like the
indomitable women of the
gospel, she kept after the
Lord to open new ways to
serve the needs of people.
Through her 17 years
as Principal of Nativity School, Sister Julia

while instilling the happiness

prevailed
throughout the school from
the Kindergarten to the

that filled the Sisters of St.
Joseph Residence Chapel at
her Memorial Mass offered
last Saturday, March 21st.
Sister Julia graduated
from Mount St. Joseph
Teachers College and attended Catholic University
for further study. St. Joseph School on North Main
Street, St. Mark School, St.
Francis Xavier School, and
St. Francis de Sales School
were recipients of Sister
Julia’s earliest enthusiasm
and energetic creativity.
Several years of Sister
Julia’s administrative and
teaching career were spent
at St. Patrick’s in Java
Center and St. Mary’s in
Medina before coming to
Nativity in 1964 as Superior and Principal.
In 1990 she left Nativity’s Casa Di Vita to teach
at Mt. St. Joseph Academy
and in 1994 she went to the
Family Support Center to
work with children.
Sister Julia’s concern for
the needy led her to devote
time and energy to helping
refugees, particularly those
from Southeast Asia, begin
a new life in Buffalo.
Sister Julia will always be remembered in
the hearts and memories
of all those who had the
privilege to spend time in
her life. She was kind, she
had humanity, she made
life worth living and her
life was dedicated to God’s
love. May she rest in peace
forever.
