Rocket Man by Doug Smith Cloudy Memory’s Silver Lining Perhaps subconsciously honoring her own late Hazel, who left far too soon, First Mate honors Mothers’ Day like the reconstructed Scrooge. She cleans out card racks, selecting messages for virtually every mother she knows, relatives, friends, fellow covered-bridge fanatics. She may single-handedly yank the Postal Service back from bankruptcy. Now, a bittersweet event adds another mother to the roll. For almost our entire 25 years at this address, she’s watched a woman walk a dog around the block, first one, then another, now a breathtakingly beautiful beast Rocket Man could call Silver Cloud. Silver Cloud would look our way and wag but her mistress has wanted no part of us. Every time she passed she would pull Silver Cloud more tightly to her and purposefully look away, maybe even cross the street. We’ve no idea why she would so shun us. Rocket Man suspects it might stem from one long-ago afternoon when an earlier dog, and one of ours, engaged in a friendly waste-water shootout through her chain link fence. Rocket Man laughed. They didn’t. Recently, Silver Cloud has orbited far more frequently, three or four times a day, sometimes at intervals of only a few minutes. Then one day Silver Cloud came around the corner with someone else at the other end of the leash, the woman’s son, who responded to a wave by coming over to chat, the dog the WE SELL PAPER 3215 Delaware Ave. Kenmore, NY 14217 (716) 873-4774 WHITE If your name is found in the BUFFALO ROCKET to win a FREE PIZZA, take proof of identification to BOB & JOHN'S LA HACIENDA at 1545 Hertel Avenue to pick up your FREE PIZZA (Takeout only, must be redeemed within one week). First mate mentioned the frequency of recent passages. He said with a sigh that his Mom was “getting pretty forgetful,” and sort of asked us to keep an eye on her. He, too, was at a loss to estimate why she held us in such disdain. Monday, the earth moved. As she passed, she turned, waved and said “hi.” Silver Cloud almost shuddered with excitement. Next day, First Mate went out to the street and they had a long visit about the dog and other matters. And Silver Cloud’s mistress said, “My memory isn’t what it used to be.” When she returned, Rocket Man asked, “What on EARTH is going on?!” “I believe,” said First Mate, “that she has forgotten that she doesn’t like us.” ‘tis true. She’s stopped a couple more times since. First Mate grazed the petfood aisle and picked up some treats for the dog, who is fiddle-fit and three degrees beyond adorable. And Rocket Man got to thinking how wonderful it would be if, for a blinking moment, we could all have old and certainly foolish grudges wiped from the slate. Surely her overall prognosis is a matter of concern and we will, indeed, monitor her movements closely. But for now, Happy Mother’s Day, it’s nice to have her back. Mayor Byron Brown and Niagara District Council Member David Rivera unveiled the newly minted “Edward Porto Way” on Connecticut Street between Fargo and Prospect venues on Monday, May 11th. Mayor Brown and Council Member Rivera were joined by members of the Porto family and friends of Edward Porto. The trailblazing sign, affixed to a city light pole at 307 Connecticut Street, will remind all those who pass of Ed Porto’s dedication to the West Side. Ed founded the Amici Lodge #255 Order Italian Sons & Daughters of America, located at 299 Connecticut Street for over 38 years. He also cofounded the St. Anthony Italian Festival, which was celebrated on Connecticut Street for over 13 years before moving to its current location on Hertel Avenue. “Ed Porto was an origi- nal West Side booster” Rivera stated, “and we continue to see that Porto support of the West Side today as his wife and family members still live in the neighborhood and work at community organizations on the West Side.” Rivera added, “Edward Porto Way will serve in honor of Ed’s service to the West Side and Buffalo and a reminder to his family and friends of the lasting impact he had on this community.” Edward Porto was born May 11, 1938 and was a lifelong resident of Buffalo until his passing in 2008. He served as an Army Reservist until 1958 when he was honorably discharged. Married to his wife Danette for 46 years, he was a father to Debbie, Phil, and Judy, grandfather to Danielle, Rena, Danette, Sean, and Cara and great grandfather to Justin and Anthony. The win kept the Pirates undefeated at 3-0 in the Second Minors Division and gave the Braves their first loss in the season. The young pitcher helped his own cause on the mound, giving his team an early 2-0 lead with his first homerun of the season. Then in the fourth, his triple extended the Pirate lead while two other Pirate pitchers kept the basepaths empty. The Brewers, Marlins and Padres rounded out the division and will get their chance to face the Pirates soon. Most of the players are up from the Rookie Division from last season and are now facing live pitching instead of the use of a pitching machine. On Saturday, Sal Genco scored the winning run with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Mets rallied to upend the Cardinals, 9-8. The Nationals defeated the Reds 62 to remain undefeated and the Cubs picked up their first win of the year with a 6-3 win over the Giants. MacKenzie Kelly-Parker and the Rockies got a jumpstart on the top of the Major Pony Division with a big win over the Dodgers. The defending champ Cardinals are a game behind at 2-l, led by Anna Gardner and Ellie Robertson. Jordin Flynn and Emma Foster of the Dodgers will give both teams some headaches with their fine pitching and defense in weeks to come. In Minor Pony, the Blue Jays are 3-0 already and lead a six team division. That’s up two teams from last season with the addition of the A’s and the Orioles. In Rookie Pony, the team to beat is the Rebels. Jasmin Barlow led the team to a win over the Angels on Opening Day. Amelia Cline led the Lil Devils to their first win and the Shamrocks rounded out the division where no team really walks away sad about losing. In First Minors, Zane Schenck hit his first homerun ever to lead the Tigers over the Yankees. Bryce Thomas pitched two scoreless innings, striking out six Angels. Hunter Potts hit a solo homerun to lead the A’s, 9-6. Getting off to a good start makes for a better season for any player. Games have been low scoring and competitive, and on Saturdays as many as 20 games can be played over a full day. No matter which diamond you choose, baseball and softball are in full swing in North Buffalo. The Buffalo Rocket will print these columns on a space available basis.
