May News From Needles & Pins Let’s Think Summer! Let’s hear it for May! It’s time to sweep off the patio, pull out the lawn furniture and dress up the kitchen for festive summer events. Debbie Gibson got us into the spirit when she sent the photo of her new Easy Striped Table Runner (at right) using this patriotic fabric from Timeless Treasures. She’s just in time for the many national holidays coming up! Sandy demonstrated the prairie points on these new, fun placemats from Quilt In A Day’s Patriotic Party pattern at our April Creative Saturday program at the Grange. Add some buttons and you are setting a great table for summer. Doesn’t this garden vegetable fabric make you think of summer? We brought out the bright colors in the fabrics we chose for the center blocks to make this quick and easy Pineapple Twist Runner from Gathering Friends’ Runnermania. Salad, anyone? Quilts of Valor Continue! Martha Becraft is just the latest to bring us quilts for the residents at Charlotte Hall Veterans Hospital. These bright scrappy quilts will give their new owners lots to talk about! We’re collecting quilts through the summer with our 2013 deadline in September. Watch for news of that celebration and please consider making a quilt this year for Charlotte Hall! If you have a beach trip planned, you’ll want a bag to hold all the essentials. Melissa made this colorful tote for our focus on G.E. Designs in March. May Sewing Machine Service Michael Sneeringer of The Sew’n Place will be here on Monday, May 20 for our monthly sewing machine service day. We have a few changes to our routine: We are accepting a maximum of 15 appointments for machine work each month, so please call us early. If you pick up your machine while Michael is here, you can now use your credit card with him. If you pick up your machine from us af terward, it needs to be either check or cash. Over the years, Quilt In A Day has produced more than 104 books, signature patterns and specialty rulers. No one expects to complete any of these projects in a day, of course, although I remember when shops taught Eleanor’s log cabin quilt in a one day, 6 am to 9 pm class — complete exhaustion and less-than-stellar-work! Punch Needle Class Coming Up Punch needle is an old art that can be traced back to the Egyptians. It was used in embellishing medieval ecclesiastical garments and has been a favorite form of embroidery for generations. We’re offering a Punch Needle Class for beginners and those with experience on Saturday, May25th from 1-4 pm at the Grange Hall in New Market. $15. A Juki Story I just finished the Music Box Jumper from oliver + s, makers of children’s clothing patterns. I am very pleased with their patterns—the directions are wellwritten, there are multiple sizes and the pattern pieces are welldrafted. because it has buttonholes up the back, and I wanted to use the wonderful buttonhole attachment on the Juki F600 to make these. Wow! It couldn’t be easier! If you’ve set aside garment sewing because it’s difficult to make buttonholes, come in and take a look at this machine. You’ll be impressed! They are one of my favorite things about living and working here. I was thinking about the fountains as I pondered themes for our new free Early Bird Sampler program. It led me to choose a dozen blocks that represent some of “My Favorite Things.” Each month I’ll show a different 12” block and talk about block construction, tools, fabrics and some background on the ‘favorite thing’ of the month.
