ALL THAT’S NEW FROM ROYAL CROWN DERBY IN ENGLISH FINE BONE CHINA
Celebrating 2nd June 1953
The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II
June Branscombe has designed a range of four pieces and as always with
June’s beautiful designs, they are packed with symbols and emblems
relevant to the occasion. The focal point, a central E surrounded by a cross
and fleur de lis, is encompassed by an inscription and gold laurel branches.
The border decoration depicts ermine, the Rose of England and the rope
binding the Monarchy and the United Kingdom, all framed in a regal
purple band with gold edging. The four pieces available in this range are
an 8” Surrey plate, a Loving cup and Miniature loving cup, all limited
editions of 950, but also an unlimited Five petal tray.

Good news made in
England
We have certainly started off 2013 with
much excitement. The news that Steelite
International has acquired the business
has injected a great deal of enthusiasm and
there is resolve to build on the great work
done by Hugh Gibson during his time at
the helm and drive the business on to even
greater things in the years ahead. There will
no doubt be some changes but the business
will, like Steelite, remain firmly Made in
England and justly proud of the fact.
Obviously once again Royal events will
dominate much of the year with the
anniversary of the Coronation in June
followed swiftly by the birth of a new Royal
baby. Both events will be marked in typical
Royal Crown Derby fashion with a range
of tasteful and suitable commemoratives to
suit all. The Coronation range is available
now and reaction has been strong all over
the world and we anticipate that most of
the limited editions will sell out. Look out
for the new pieces in this issue. The range
for the Royal baby is being worked on now
and will be unveiled only once the baby is
safely delivered, hopefully sometime in July.
Since the birth is unlikely to coincide with
the publication of our next magazine if
you would like to receive details of the new
range as soon as it is released then please
register on our website. It seems that our
US collectors in particular are very excited
about the news of a first child for William
and Kate so we expect demand for the
limited editions to be very strong.
We have bought forward the retirement
announcement this year as it was felt
that September was a little too close to
Christmas. Since there was no retirement
list last year it is quite an extensive one this
time but stocks on all items are limited so
once they are gone there will be no more.
Visit your local retailer or look on line for
these pieces some of which have not been
in the range very long and as such are
relatively rare.
The next Collectors Summer Event will
take place on 21st June (see page 13) and
you will be pleased to see we have reverted
to an evening timing on this occasion.
Places are usually in high demand so please
get your reservations in as soon as possible.
I am sure that if you watched the new
series Mr Selfridge that you will have seen
a number of Royal Crown Derby patterns
taking pride of place in many of the scenes.
Well keep watching some of the other
high profile drama series for yet more
appearances. We even pop up in Allo Allo
if you look very carefully!
The New Year heralded exciting times for Royal
Crown Derby with the announcement that it has been
acquired by leading UK ceramics manufacturer Steelite
International. After many years of inspired leadership,
former Chief Executive The Hon. Hugh Gibson
decided it was time to retire, having taken great care
to ensure that the spirit and heritage of Royal Crown
Derby was made secure and in very good hands.
Interestingly, the two companies share a bond which spans many
decades, having both been part of the former Royal Doulton
Group and both choosing to become privately owned enterprises
committed to the highest quality manufacture in England. Both
Companies value their respective brand integrity; Steelite and Royal
Crown Derby are both ‘Made in England’ and have remained true to
the core values that guide them. Steelite International has ambitious
plans for Royal Crown Derby and soon plans to launch into a

new market with a new brand, ‘Royal Crown Derby
Entertains’ providing fine bone china tableware to some
of the finest hotels, restaurants and hospitality venues in
the world. Based in Stoke-on-Trent, Steelite International
is a world-leading manufacturer and supplier of
award-winning, inspirational tabletop ranges for the
international hospitality industry. New Chief Executive,
Kevin Oakes, said: “This is excellent news for both companies. Like
us, Royal Crown Derby has a first-class reputation across the globe
and together I am certain we can reach new heights of success. We
have researched the international hospitality market very carefully
over the past year and know that there is a market for fine bone china
which boasts that genuine Made in England pedigree. ‘Royal Crown
Derby Entertains’ will most definitely fulfil that niche.” Meanwhile,
with the future of Royal Crown Derby secure, collectors can be
assured of innovative and exciting times ahead.

Artwork on show. Paul Harrison with his ball painted
by Jane Etherington which is on display at the News
Telegraph offices in Asbourne, Derby.
An Ashbourne painter has
described how it felt to see her
artwork on a Shrovetide ball for
the first time. Jane Etherington,
a ceramic artist at Royal Crown Derby for
twenty-four years, was asked to re-paint the
ball scored by Paul Harrison during the Ash
Wednesday game in 2000.
Mr Harrison made a cabinet incorporating a
mirror base, lights and a revolving disco ball
motor to allow the complete artwork to be
seen.
He said “ I’m extremely happy with the artwork
Jane has done. She’s done a really good job.”
Jane said “ I feel honoured to be asked to do it
because I’ve always followed Shrovetide. I love
it, it’s in my blood”.

Celebrating Royal Babies
The tradition of marking births and christenings
with a gift goes back many years. Fine bone china
provides the perfect medium for a special gift that
can be personalised. The oldest piece in the museum
that commemorates a birth is a hand painted and
gilded loving cup that was made to celebrate the birth
or christening of the daughter of one of the factory’s
owners. It was designed and decorated by Desire Leroy,
one of the most celebrated of Derby’s artists. Other
items in the museum include some very pretty mugs
painted with a name in flowers dating to the 1930s.
In more recent history Royal babies have been
celebrated with commemorative items. A loving cup
and plate were produced for Prince William in 1982
decorated with a powder blue design. The arrival of
Prince Henry was marked by a loving cup to match
his brothers and a miniature loving cup in the Royal
Pinxton Rose pattern. Prince Henry can cause some
confusion to people these days who forget that,
although he is always known as Harry, he was actually
christened Henry.

The proud and gentle mother Pig,
Priscilla, keeps a watchful eye on her
new little Piglet, Snuffle, who has a
very mischievous look on it’s face! The
colouring of both mum and piglet has
been designed in shades of dark and
light blue, a rich red and a soft pink.
The stylised flowers, blossom and leaves
on both of these fabulous new pieces
creates a bright, fresh and pretty effect
and means that they complement
each other perfectly. The Piglet is the
complimentary piece for existing and
new members of the Royal Crown
Derby Collectors Guild and the mother
Pig is the exclusive piece to members
during 2013.
John has worked wonders in creating a
new and contemporary look with these
pieces, whilst still retaining the Royal
Crown Derby feel.
