He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the R.S.L.,
Telling stories of the past.
Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his mates;
They were heroes, every one.
And 'tho sometimes to his neighbours
His tales became a joke,
All his mates listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.
But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Jack has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Digger died today.
He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.
He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Digger died today.
When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.
The Media tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Digger
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.
Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some smoothie who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?
Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?
The politician's stipend
And the style in which they live,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that they give.
While the ordinary Digger,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.
It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

With their compromise and ploys,

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some copout,
With his ever-waffling stand?
Or would you want a Digger
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Digger,
Who would fight until the end?
He was just a common Digger,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.
For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Digger's part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.
If we cannot do him honour
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days.
Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN
MOURNING,
A DIGGER DIED TODAY.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left
grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the
morning
We will remember them."
By the evening of 25 April, 557 wounded had been
taken on board the Gascon. Ella Tucker stayed
with the ship for the next nine months as it ferried
over 8000 wounded and sick soldiers between the
Gallipoli Peninsula and the hospitals on Imbros,
Lemnos, Salonika, Alexandria, Malta and in England. An entry in her diary for a voyage in May
reflects the stressed and, at times, almost surreal
nature of her work:
“Ella Tucker, in Bassett,
Guns and Brooches”
The wounded from the landing commenced to come on board at 9 am and poured into the ship’s wards from
barges and boats. The majority still had on their field dressing and a number of these were soaked through.
Two orderlies cut off the patient’s clothes and I started immediately with dressings. There were 76 patients
in my ward and I did not finish until 2 am.

Bunyip & District, Tuesday 17 March
2015: Ryan Gorick has started a
Bachelor of Science - Physics degree at
Swinburne University with the help of a
scholarship from Bunyip & District
Community Bank® Branch.
Ryan was chosen from a field of four
applicants for the annual scholarship, which helps firstyear university students on their path to tertiary education
with a $5,000 bursary.
Tony Ross, Director of Bunyip & District Community
Bank® Branch, said he was pleased to be able to help a
local student overcome the financial hurdles of further
study and reach their goals.
“Ryan is very deserving of this scholarship and will be a
fine ambassador for the Bunyip & District community.”
Ryan said he was thrilled to be able to start university with
the financial security a scholarship provided.
“I can’t wait to get started and work towards expanding my
knowledge in the development of technology, particularly
high speed and long distance communication systems,”
he said.
“This scholarship means I will be able to focus on my
studies more and worry less about the costs associated
with travelling backwards and forwards.”
The Bunyip & District Community Bank® Scholarship is
part of the Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Scholarship
Program, which is one of the largest privately funded
scholarship programs in Australia.
This year the program awarded more than 206
scholarships, worth a total of $1.4 million, to students
across Australia.
Tony Ross said the scholarship program showed Bunyip
& District Community Bank® company’s ongoing
commitment to supporting local youth and building
stronger communities.
“Our young people are our future and their development is
critical to this community’s success,” he said.
“Many students in our surrounding area have big dreams
for their future careers and we’re hoping that with the right
support they might be able to bring those skills back to
their hometown one day.”

Chronic pain/illness-It can define who you are, but it
shouldn’t.
Pain can be consuming, it can take over your
everyday and it can even become who you are. You become
the person with the bad back, or the sore knee. In years gone
by people used to be defined more this way because there was
nothing that could be done medically, but even today people
can still be defined by their issues.
Pain can be such a big part of your life that it ends up
being the basis on which you make your decisions, it controls
your social life, and it takes over your family life. Sometimes
this is necessary, but when it changes you to the core this is
unfortunate, pain should not define you. Through pain and
suffering we can actually grow, learn and understand
ourselves better.
We need to communicate well with our family, put
healthy strategies in place to help both parties cope with the
condition. Help all parties understand the condition as best
they can, understand warning signs and know when the
condition is at its best so activity can be done. Understand
that loved ones can get burnt out doing everything from work,
family and domestic and social duties. Take the opportunity
to understand each other’s points of view and help one another
make positive helpful life decisions, and yes there will need to
be sacrifice and understanding on both sides. Don’t let
chronic pain or illness tear apart your lives.
Chronic medical conditions are hard, don’t give up,
there may not be a full solution, but there is help out there. If
you would like to discuss your chronic pain concerns, talk to
your GP, or feel free to contact David at Sollberger
Osteopathy on 5941 5852.

Your volunteer fire brigade has responded to over 40 incidents/emergencies since Jan 1st. This means that on
average we have responded to 3 incidents per week. This is on top of the training, community engagements, fire prevention and meetings that the volunteers undertake.

held our Annual General Meeting in conjunction with our biennial elections
completed a Section 29 Audit and Inspection

The new brigade management team takes over on July 1st for a two-year period. Congratulations to all.
With the onset of colder weather many families will be relying on wood heaters for their source of warmth. Are you
aware that the flue on your heater collects carbon particles that stick to the flue or enters the wall cavity through
cracks in your chimney? This unfortunately can result in a chimney fire which although relatively minor, has the potential to destroy your home. Please have a professional check your flue.

Rotary Club of Bunyip – Garfield
A history lesson:
The first Rotary Club was formed when attorney Paul P. Harris called together a meeting of three
business acquaintances in downtown Chicago, at Harris' friend Gustave E. Loehr's office in the Unity
Building on Dearborn Street on February 23, 1905. In addition to Harris and Loehr (a mining engineer and freemason,
Silvester Schiele (a coal merchant), and Hiram E. Shorey (a tailor) were the other two who attended this first meeting.
The members chose the name Rotary because initially they rotated subsequent weekly club meetings to each other's
offices, although within a year, the Chicago club became so large it became necessary to adopt the now-common
practice of a regular meeting place.
Rotary first touched our shores in Australia in1921, with the charter of the Rotary Club of Melbourne, closely followed
by the charter of a Sydney Club and other Clubs around the nation.
Our Mission:We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace
through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. Rotarians have a simple motto: Service
Above Self.
Our Four-Way Test ; Our Four-Way test is a simple ethical framework to help us in our lives every day. Feel welcome
to use it yourself - it's pretty simple: Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
If you would like to become part of this wonderful organisation please phone Graeme on 0417 105 598

APRIL NEWS
The Mange Management newsletter for Autumn is now
available, which keeps us up to date with the latest information on wombat assistance in the local area. The
newsletter has been sent to all on the BARN’s e-mailing
list, but for those not on our list, the newsletter can be
accessed on the Mange Management website:
www.mangemanagement.org.au
During April there is a fundraiser running for the BAST
Cat Rescue club. They have raffle tickets located on
the counter of the Bunyip Vet Clinic, with the prize being
a $100 grooming voucher being drawn in early May.
The BAST cat club has been generous in helping animals from the local area, so next time you’re going past
the clinic, feel free to pop in and purchase a ticket or
make a gold coin donation to help them along with their
wonderful work. Thank you to the Bunyip vet clinic for
having the raffle tickets on their counter.
April 20 – 26 is the World Week for Animals in Laboratories. (Website: www.wwaail.org) There are lots of
medical charities in Australia calling for public donations, which they then channel into medical research
that utilises laboratory animals. Most people aren’t
aware of the options available to them when it comes to
funding good causes. Humane Research Australia has
recently launched a free App for smart phones which
will offer users information at their fingertips about
which medical charities do not fund animal based research. For people who care about what their donations
get used for, this App is invaluable. It can be sourced
online via the App store or via the HRA website:

Lots of fun at Bunyip Kindergarten
The children at Bunyip Kindergarten have certainly been busy during Term 1. We have been learning about the lifecycle by
watching a chrysalis hatch into a Monarch Butterfly, chickens hatch from their eggs and even stick insects. The children loved
having a hold of the fluffy little chickens.
We had a visit from Pacific Smiles Dental who talked to the children about how to brush their teeth, how often and what to look
forward to next time they visit the dentist. We took a walk down to the Bunyip Police Station and found out all about being a police
officer. We would like to say a big thank you to our local officers who were very accommodating and answered all the children’s
questions.
During the term all the children and staff worked on a 100 year ANZAC commemoration project which was entered into the
Pakenham Show. It was a paper mache ANZAC slouch hat surrounded by red poppies which were made from the thumb prints of
all the children. We won first prize and had great fun doing it!
In the last week there was plenty of Easter activities in preparation for the Easter Bunny’s arrival during the holidays and a
campfire where marshmallows were cooked along with Wombat stew (but not using a real wombat, of course).
The kids have had a great start to the year meeting and making new friends, exploring the community we live in and we can’t wait
to see what Term 2 will bring us.
Bunyip Kindergarten still has positions available. Do you have a child who has recently turned 3 or will by 30 April 2015? They
are eligible to attend pre-kinder program. For more information or enrolment enquiries contact Cardinia Shire Council on 1300 787

“There are also a lot of charitable and socially conscious organisations who are doing some great work to provide environmentally
friendly alternatives for items like furniture, mobile phones, reading glasses or printer cartridges,” Ms Kerr said.
We encourage residents to do a little research such as using the Planet Ark 'Recycling Near You' website and find out if there is
socially responsible alternative to landfill.”

TALKIN’ ...FISHIN’ .............. Selective domestics
Having just been on a boys week away fishing trip, things came to my attention that I’ve never
really noticed before. Sure we have heard how when blokes are away how untidy, unshaven, stink,
strange noises, bad habits, bad language run amuck and all of the above. But having been on
many of these trips through the years, I can honestly say, hand on heart only some is true. Bad
language, sure that happens, and stinks, but usually we can’t wait for the shower, after a hard
day’s fishing and a top paddock feed along with it.
Alcohol is usually a key ingredient on these trips for some, but as you get older you do grow out of
the stupid quantities consumed when we were younger. We are content to just indulge in the
companionship and a few beers or whatever comes from a bottle, and share the “bulltish stories”
and the common thread that brings us there in the first place, ‘Fishing’.
In contrast these days most times you will find the guys more than helpful, dishes get done, trip
expenses shared, meals cooked, some showing off their MKR ambitions. The lunches are made for
the next days fishing and on longer trips even the washing gets done. Most times everybody helps
out to make a great trip out of it for all. There are some exceptions though, but you’ll find the invite
is not extended again to those who sponge of others.
You’ve got to be amazed though that after returning home to the little woman how we all deny all
knowledge of these skills and its all forgotten along with any existence of such things ever taking
place. We revert to the hopeless spouse who can’t do a thing for himself without the wife’s help, or
is it due to our laziness, or that we like ‘her-in-doors’ to feel totally needed. Some of this would
have to be classed as “Secret Men’s” business for sure, so I can’t say too much, or else! Threats of
a loaded Mullet in your letter box are for REAL!
A lot’s to be said for the true Mates you acquire over the years, if a man’s lucky he will gather a
mere handful, but to be truthful “two” that he can count on, has great value. When you don’t have to
ask for a hand or expect a payback for a favour. These friendships usually last a lifetime, just a nod
or a handshake often passes with a “thanks Mate”, that suffices.
In Honour of our ANZAC’s
For what we have and can enjoy the things we love to do today.
“thanks Mate”
Bunyip-Garfield Probus Club
Our club went to Cornucopia Museum before going to Peppermint Ridge Farmers at Tynong North. We
learnt about Australian Native Plants and the way they can be used in cooking. After a look around the
garden we were treated to a different kind of lunch where they had used some of the native Plants that they
grow.
Our A.G.M. was well attended with all positions filled. We were saddened to hear of George Taylor passing
away in W.A. George was our Inaugural President when the club started 8 years ago. Condolences to his
family. Mark Knight who is with the herald Sun as their Cartoonist entertained us with how he comes up
with ideas to create drawings for each day’s papers.
We had a day in Melbourne where we went to Lindsey Fox’s Classic Car Collection to see some of the
beautifully restored cars like Mercedes Benz, Porsche, M.G’s and others. A lot of them have been owned by
famous people some from across the world. Next stop was the Docklands for lunch before going on the
Melbourne Star to look at the skyline of the city.
After we looked around the Docklands before heading home.

LOCAL FOOTY IS BACK
By Roman Kulkewycz
Local footy and Netball is back for the 2015 Season.
This year the EDFL has reverted back to a one tier,
15 team Competition. Although not all Clubs were
happy with this decision the majority voted for the
one Division. There will be a draw of 17 Rounds;
each club will play 16 matches and have a bye. Each
team will play each other once and 2 teams twice.
There will be 2 games this Saturday ( Anzac Day )
with the remaining 5 games to be played on Sunday
(26th April).
There will be a Final 8 based on the AFL system,
where 4 teams will have the double chance. The
Finals will begin on the 29th August, with the Grand
Final being contested on the 19th September.
There will be Junior football in U16’s and U18’s
levels only. There will be no U13’s Competition this
season. The removal of the 5th tier of the EDFL was
a decision made by the AFL Gippsland Commission.
In a replay of last Season’s Grand Final in the U18's
in the Catch Up Round last month, Cora Lyn playing
at home turned the tables easily defeating reining
Premiers Nar Nar Goon. It was a twilight game
played at Cora Lyn. The season got into full swing
on Saturday the 11th April.
Final Score Cora Lyn: 15-7-97
Nar Nar Goon 6-6-42

Pre Season Setback For Strikers Soccer Club
By Roman Kulkewycz
The mysterious disappearance of a bag of club strips as well as 20 pairs of football socks belonging to the
Senior team of the Bunyip and District “Strikers” Soccer Club has set the Club back $1500.00 to replace
these items.
The disappearance was immediately noticed when the committee members attended to their storage facility
at the ground recently to sort things out in preparation for the coming season. It is unclear when the theft
occurred since the players have been in recess since the conclusion of last season. “It’s happened off season”,
said committee member Ms. Linda Jeric “We have had to replace these items for the coming season at a
great cost to our Club”, she added.
Club President, Adrian Gatti hopes that the culprit or culprits will return these items to a place somewhere in
Bunyip where they can be handed back to the Club.
The tops are a white with green numbers colour bearing the club name and the socks are a distinctive
burgandy in colour. “They are of no use to anyone because of their distinctive branding. It’s just vandalism”.
I sincerely hope that they have not been destroyed or damaged and those responsible will return them”, said
Mr. Gatti. “We have reported this to the police”, said Mr. Gatti
Anyone who has information as to the whereabouts of this bag of
strips and socks should contact the Bunyip Police on 5629-5205.

BUNYIP STRIKERS WIN FRIENDLY
Last month the Bunyip Strikers Soccer club played host to the Korumburra Soccer Club. The match was
played in good spirits and due to the hot conditions with the temperature reaching 27 degrees, the play was
halted several times to allow players to have a drink.
The Strikers played well as a team and put the score on the board,

FROM A READER:
Recently I was walking my dog in the township of
Bunyip and my dog did a big DROPPING right in
the middle of the footpath. I continued walking
when I heard a voice say “excuse me sir but could
you PLEASE put that dogeedo in a bag and not
leave it for someone else to walk into, otherwise
you may get a bylaws fine”.
So I went home and got a bag and cleaned up my
dogs mess which in hindsight I thought was fair and
furthermore I started noticing recently that lot more
dog droppings are appearing on our nature strips
and footpaths. Do your wallet a favour and clean up
after YOUR dogee.
