From the Editor
We hope that you all have had a
great start to 2014. We have received
lots of positive comment about our
move to full colour, and hope you will
be pleased with this issue. One new
addition is Community Noticeboard,
our "one-stop shop" for community
events happening over the coming
months.
This issue sees the continuation
of Mark Learmonth's popular series
of articles about Burwood Walks, a
reader's response to last issue's story
about the Ashburton Forest, plus
much more that we hope you will
enjoy. Which leads me to an invitation
to all readers: if you have, or know of,
a story you would like to share, please
contact us – we'd love to hear from
you!

Monashlink takes on diabetes
T
he rate of diabetes in Australia is continuing to rise
with over 100 000 adults developing diabetes each
year; around 1.5 million Australians are currently
alicted.
MonashLink has been helping people with diabetes for
more than 35 years and provides a specialised team approach
to supporting those who are already diagnosed as well as
those who may be at risk.
As part of our “Living Well with Diabetes” approach,
we tailor a program of individual consultations and group
activities to meet your needs with our highly specialised
multidisciplinary team. he team includes a diabetes
educator (registered nurse), a podiatrist and a dietitian
who work with you, your family, your medical practitioner
and endocrinologist (diabetes specialist) to ensure you are
provided with the most up-to-date and appropriate advice,
support and clinical care.
Our group activities include a diabetes support group, a
specialised exercise group, a diabetes prevention group and a
Chinese-speaking group.
“I have lost 4.5kg and 3cm from my waist, given up smoking
and am walking daily since visiting the team about my diabetes,”
said Kaye.
At MonashLink we can also provide other services that
may be useful such as oral health, physiotherapy, occupational
therapy, speech pathology and counselling – we really are a
“one-stop shop” for all your health needs.
So how do I know if I am at risk of diabetes?
If you are over 35 years and are:
• an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
• from the Paciic Islands
• from the Indian subcontinent
• from a Chinese cultural background
If you are over 50 years and:
• have a irst-degree relative with type 2 diabetes
• have high blood pressure
• are obese
If you are over 65 years and:
• have a history of heart disease
• have had impaired glucose tolerance
• have had gestational diabetes
Symptoms for diabetes can be gradual, easily missed or
mistaken for just getting old! You should get tested by your
medical practitioner if you fall into one of the above groups
or if you sufer from any of the following.
• Increase in thirst
• Tiredness
• Frequent need to use the toilet
• Numbness or tingling in the legs and feet
• Blurred vision
• Recurring infections
If you already have diabetes, there are plenty of ways in
which you can continue to live well and reduce the risk of
developing complications.
You must have a yearly medical check of your:
• weight
• blood pressure
• cholesterol/other blood fats
• kidneys
• eyes
• HbA1c (1-4 times each year)
• feet
You must also:
• be active
• eat well
• regularly test your blood glucose and HbA1C
• not smoke
• get regular education and keep up-to-date with the
latest advice
Don says: “We all know we have to eat better, exercise more
and look after ourselves, but I never knew where to start. Coming
here made it much easier”.

health needs, please contact us on 1300 552 509 or visit our

Riversdale Soccer Club
1978
A
chance meeting of three young Englishmen in the
Sydney Airport lounge in January 1978 gave the
present Riversdale Soccer Club its irst president,
irst captain and coach and irst Best and Fairest winner. Not
wishing to spend the inal leg of their journey alone, the wee,
garrulous Englishmen struck up a conversation and over a
few beers between lights the three were surprised to learn
that they would be living only 10 minutes from each other
in Camberwell, Victoria.
Some months had passed when one Saturday afternoon
in the Club Bar of the Riversdale Hotel in Hawthorn one of
the men, who was working for a company called G. Kennon
(a manufacturer of carpets and vinyl accessories for General
Motors Holden), was looking for people interested in taking
part in his company soccer team.
G. Kennon's home ground for that irst season and next
was the R. J. Sillitoe Reserve in Ludstone Street, Hampton.
By the irst season’s end, G. Kennon was to reach eighth
place on the League table with three wins, ive draws and
ten losses.

established. At the conclusion of the 1979 season, players
and supporters resolved to formulate a draft constitution
establishing that “he Name of the Organization is Riversdale
Soccer Club”.
By 1980, all connections between Riversdale Soccer Club
and G. Kennon had been severed. Gone were the yellow
shirts and green shorts and socks, replaced with blue shirts
and navy shorts and socks.
Today Riversdale is a community-based club located in
Camberwell. It boasts 300 registered players, with a range
of senior and junior teams. Our goal is to provide an
environment for players to enjoy participation in a team
sport, learn to play football, and be supported in developing
and achieving their potential.
Our Juniors home ground is located at Hartwell Reserve
in Glen Iris; our Seniors play at Frog Hollow Reserve on
Fordham Avenue in Camberwell.
he club is now actively registering players for the 2014
season, which kicks of in April. For club information and

and chances to have a better life.
Recently two new cafés have opened in
Ashburton. he centre also has an Afghan kebab shop
where the food is unpretentious, but reasonably priced.
Servings are fairly generous too.
Fussy Pots, one of our new cafés, not only ofers
interesting food, but will hold children’s parties upstairs.
In other café news, Milk Cloud has changed hands and
hopefully this team will go the distance. hey managed to
have an Australia Day special – a good attempt that bodes
well for innovations in the future.
Eat Fish, our ish shop on the main drag, has already
developed a good client base and is proving a winner with
your scribe. To date I have already managed to get two
meals, both fabulous, out of one purchase, and have had
other illing meals there without breaking the bank.
By the time you folk read this, the Ashburton Festival
will have been staged. I do hope that the last Sunday in
February will be ine and mild so we can enjoy the day.

Indian mynas no minor threat
T
YPE “Indian myna bird” into an internet search
engine and the result will be thousands of sites
ofering instructions for eradicating the species fast
becoming Australia’s number one feral enemy.
In 1862 common Indian myna birds were deliberately
imported in an endeavour to control insect pests in
Melbourne’s market gardens – in their homeland they are
known as the “farmer’s friend” because of their predilection
for crop-destroying insects. Since that time their numbers
have exploded to the point where they are a serious
environmental threat to Australia’s native wildlife. A recent
impact survey revealed they are causing a decline in nine
Australian bird species.
Indian mynas (or garbage birds) are scavengers, able
to eat a wide range of food types including insects, meat,
fruits, vegetables, lizards, small ish, pet food and stock feed.
Any attempt to restrict one food results in their shifting to
another. Poisoning is too much of a risk to children and
pets.
Mynas form breeding pairs from September to March
and they can raise multiple clutches each year of four or ive
chicks per clutch and travel in small family groups to look
for food at regular feeding sites. After March, they move to
communal roosts in larger groups, where they can number
in the hundreds.
Although seemingly indestructible, Indian mynas
do have their weaknesses. Dr Chris Tidemann, of the
Australian National University, has designed a trap that
does not alarm the birds – apparently mynas are highly
intelligent and learn to avoid traps when they hear distress
calls from other mynas.
Tidemann’s system, said to be clean, green, safe and
humane, has met with approval from animal welfare and
conservation groups. he trap and euthanasia system are
portable, and multiple traps can be operated by one person.
Traps are available from various organisations such as
Myna Magnet, or you can build your own. Many councils
and groups on the eastern seaboard have action plans for
the eradication of this “Rat of the Sky”. As a community
service, Men’s Sheds in Corrimal and Ballina (in New
South Wales) make and sell myna bird traps.
For anyone thinking they are attractive, harmless little
birds that deserve a place in our ecosystem, Indian mynas
were recently ranked third by the World Conservation
Union in their publication 100 of the World’s Most Invasive
Species.
Recognising Indian myna birds
Australia has a native Noisy miner bird and it is
important to diferentiate between the two species. he
native Noisy miner, which belongs to the honeyeater
family, often forages for nectar on lowering shrubs and is
a protected species.
What you can do to help Aussie birds
Feed pets indoors. Don’t leave food scraps outside.
Ensure rubbish bins are securely closed. Do not feed birds
in your backyard. An Indian Myna Control Handbook in
free downloadable pdf format is available by visiting the
website www.indianmynaproject.com.au/control-project

O you know any new immigrants – or others – who
are struggling to learn English? Or not struggling,
but keen to practise and to be able to converse more
luently. here is a free ESL (English as a Second Language)
program available to them just around the corner!
he program runs on hursdays during the school term,
and students can come at a time suitable to themselves for
conversation practice, improving reading comprehension,
asking questions, or simply meeting others and sharing a
“cuppa” (this very Australian term is just one of many idioms
that can be explained to them!).
he classes are held at Ashburton Presbyterian Church,
which is one of the two churches on “Sacred Island”, that
little triangle of land on Warrigal Road where High Street
and High Street Road nearly meet. he Anglicans have the
red-brick building on Warrigal Road whilst the Presbyterians
occupy the yellow-brick building on the point of the triangle.
he oicial address is 1 High Street Road Extension.
he classes are entirely free. hey are mainly for adults, but
any age can come. Ideally students will come regularly, but
the teachers (all of whom are trained volunteers) understand
that this is not always possible. At present classes are from
10am till noon, and from 7.30pm till 9.30.

Forest fosters
lood of
memories
Display your

pride.
Following our story about the Ashburton Forest in the summer
issue of Burwood Bulletin, we received an informative letter
from Loraine Wood, who once lived by the forest.
I would like to add my recollections of the Ashy forest in
the 40s. I lived in Ashburn Grove, opposite what is now the
Alamein station. he house was on a huge block; the back
fence was right on the edge of the forest, and memories of
collecting mushrooms with my brothers before school are
very vivid. Mushrooms were plentiful, as were blackberries
on huge, high bushes. My father would put a ladder against
the bushes to get the berries. Swaggies1 would camp in the
forest, and after collecting mushrooms would knock on our
door to ask my mother to cook them, which she did gladly.
here was no fear of trauma; the swaggies were a friendly lot,
down on their luck, and the Ashy forest was their home.
Opposite Alamein Station was a paddock (which today is
a kindergarten) where cows grazed, and our bonire nights
were held on that corner, right beside our house – the whole
street would turn out on “bonny night”. Wood was collected
from broken trees for irewood.
In spring, our delight would be to collect wildlowers in the
forest, “chocolate lowers” being a favourite, and “harbingers
of spring” or “boys and girls”, which were the same lower
just in diferent forms. We had favourite trees, which we had
given names to so we could tell our friends which tree to
meet at – the “ghost tree”, the “bridge tree” and such. As
youngsters of 10 to12 years we would hide and watch many
young lovers meeting – the Ashy forest taught us much! In
those days in Ashy we had no fear of danger in our forest.
It was a sad time when after the war the Housing
Commission purchased our Ashy forest to build muchneeded homes. My favourite shops were Rudd’s milk bar,
McCausland’s chemist on the corner of Marquis Street,
McFarlane’s ish and chip shop and Richards’ Hardware –
not forgetting “Bud” Abbot’s library and book shop.
hank you for your wonderful magazine.

and two Pets Place pet-care centres. RSPCA Burwood
East is the largest Victorian shelter, which originally
opened in 1964 with the irst dog adoption centre named
“Tailwaggers”.
Fast-forward to today and the state-of-the-art Animal
Care Centre that has been built in Burwood East. Launched
last November, this new era in animal welfare has been made
possible owing to the kindness of four generous bequestors,
who speciically wished to rebuild the older site.
Plans for the site redevelopment began in 2004 with the
objective to create a world-class facility for animal care.
Begun in August 2011, it was completed November 2013.
Burwood East alone receives over 10 000 animal
admissions a year. With only 3 per cent of funding coming
from the government, the RSPCA has made sure that the
upgraded and new services were designed to help generate
funds for its animal services. hese include indoor training
facilities, an upgraded vet clinic and hospital, retail, indoor
pet-adoption areas, expanded grooming services, a café and,
later in 2014, a doggy day-care centre.
“We are very proud of our new RSPCA Victoria Animal
Care Centre; we believe it is a world-class facility for animal
care and welfare that will ensure the thousands of animals
that come through our doors each year receive the highest
quality care,” says Maria Mercurio, CEO, RSPCA Victoria.
VETERINARY CLINIC An upgraded Vet Clinic and
consultation rooms allow RSPCA Victoria to treat 10 000
more animals per year. he clinic has a team of highly skilled
vets and nurses who provide exceptional care to RSPCAshelter animals and privately owned pets. It houses the latest
specialised equipment, with on-site radiology and pathology
testing facilities. Caring vets and nursing staf are trained
in the latest techniques and have expansive knowledge in a
range of veterinary procedures. RSPCA Victoria is grateful
to the estate of Nancy Crookesbarker for help in funding the
upgraded Clinic and Animal Hospital.
RETAIL he new retail area stocks everything from pet
accessories and health products to pet food, including Hill's
Science Diet. here are also qualiied vet nurses available if
people need guidance or advice, and there’s a large range of
products available through the online shop.
RSPCA’s work in metropolitan Melbourne is also
supported with fundraising from the op shop located just
across the road from the new Burwood East headquarters in
Burwood Heights Shopping Centre. You never know what
little treasure you might ind, and everything you spend is
reinvested in the care of RSPCA animals.
BARKERY CAFÉ Managed by Ignite Cafés, a not-forproit social enterprise, the café ofers vegetarian, vegan
and gluten-free lavoursome dishes with humanely sourced
produce.
ANIMAL TRAINING & WELL-BEING CENTRE
Made possible by the generous gift from the Frank Samways
Estate, the Animal Training & Wellbeing Centre houses the
grooming, training and doggy daycare services.
Grooming – Pet Parlour – hree expanded grooming
parlours cater for dogs and cats with special needs including
those that are anxious, have sensitive skin, are unsocial
animals and/or are older citizens. Pet Parlour is open Monday
to Saturday, 9am to 6pm.
Pet Training – he purpose-built training facility is
climate controlled, quieter, and overall a better environment
in which to train dogs.
Doggy Daycare – Opening in 2014, this will ofer a
premium dog-minding service for your pal.
INDOOR ADOPTIONS New indoor adoption areas are
temperature-controlled with 12 air-changes per hour.
YARDS Nine new yards for exercise and stimulation
of dogs that now have diferent surfaces to explore, which
aids in rehabilitation and assists them to adapt to diferent
environments.
MEMORIAL GARDENS he gardens are open to the
public, so family and friends of loved ones are welcome to
visit at any time.
SUSTAINABILITY he building was designed by Barbara
Bamford, of Bamford-Dash Architecture, and constructed
by Buxton Construction. It is made of locally sourced precast
concrete cladding, which has thermal properties and a long
lifespan to reduce its carbon footprint.
About the RSPCA
As Australia's leading animal welfare charity, the RSPCA
works tirelessly to educate the community about animal welfare
and advocates for improved legislation. Across the state of
Victoria, the RSPCA's community services include inspections,
animal shelters, clinics and education. We operate nine animal
welfare shelters providing refuge and care, and each year strive to
give more than 35 000 animals a second chance.
Established in 1871, RSPCA Victoria is a not-for-profit
charity that relies heavily on the support of Victorians to care for
“all creatures great and small”. Only 3 per cent of its operating
expenses is supported by a grant from the Victorian State
Government.

BURWOOD BULLETIN March - May 2014
B
eing a teenager is exciting and frightening at
the same time. Some of the challenges we face
include peer pressure, technology overload,
maintaining good health, pressure to perform well at
school and to keep up with everybody else. And yet,
being a teenager in 2014 is also a wonderful thing!
We live in an amazing city where there are wonderful
opportunities to get out and about together with
friends. We are becoming independent and we are
learning to do things for ourselves.
Peer pressure can be common during teenage years.
Peer pressure is when your friends put pressure on
you to do things that you may not want to do. Things
someone might do under peer pressure include trying
things that are bad for your health, disobeying your
parents behind their backs, pretending to like things
that you wouldn’t normally like and doing things that
you wouldn’t normally do. Sometimes it can be hard
to resist peer pressure because your friends’ actions
may have an impact on you or they may say things like
“If you don’t do this, I won’t be your friend any more”
or “You’re such a chicken. Seriously, just do it”, or even
“Thought you’d say no. You never know how to have
fun”. It’s important to remember – would a true friend
really say these hurtful things to you? I think it’s also
important at these times to stay true to yourself and
to also remember your values. It’s more worthwhile
having friends that care about you and respect you
than having friends that force you to be someone who
you are not.
Technology is something that we need to learn
how to manage. Teenagers spend quite a lot of time
looking at screens. Technology has impacted on how
much we exercise, how much we help out at home and
how much we go outside to get fresh air and vitamin
D. Exercise and maintaining health is important during
teenage years, because when you are in primary
school you tend to run around a lot, but once you
reach high school the running and playing stops. It’s
also important to manage your diet because if you
continually eat the wrong kinds of food, pimples may
appear on your face. Helping out at home and going
outside are also very important. We can’t do these
things if we are sitting down and playing on our devices
all the time.
Social media has become a part of our everyday lives
now. It’s an awesome way to communicate with others
and it’s an interesting way to express yourself and to
see a snippet of other people’s lives too. However, with
it comes cyber bullying, which is a form of bullying
across the internet. It has happened on social media
before and is not right. If we experience cyber bullying,
we need to be brave enough to tell a parent or a trusted
adult.
Once you reach high school, there is more pressure
for you to perform well at school. I think this is because
you are becoming closer than ever to participating in
your VCE, and every moment counts. Some parents
can put pressure on you to do well at school. This isn’t
always a good thing because you can feel anxious,
worried or overloaded. This can also work in reverse,
because if your friends don’t care about schoolwork
they can pressure you into not trying hard in your
studies. I think it’s important to stay true to yourself
even though sometimes it might be hard.
Although being a teenager comes with challenges,
it can also be the best part of your life. You get more
opportunities than you did when you were younger
and you still get to have fun and be silly sometimes. The
positive thing about the challenges is that they help
us grow and learn how to be a good friend. I’m looking
forward to the teenage years ahead!

ELL, we know where some are – but there are
still more we’ve not yet traced.
An old photograph of Hartwell State School’s
1955 boys Grade VI class shows 52 boys – very diferent
from today’s class sizes.
With 2015 being the 60th anniversary of this great
bunch’s 6th Grade experience, the search for old classmates
has begun. Unfortunately so far only 12 have been traced.
Nine of us recently met for lunch at Zous Café in Burwood
– all very clearly older and claiming to be wiser! he goal
was to catch up with more recent doings and to put names
to faces from the school photograph.
he nine of us came from all over the state: the North
East, Gippsland, the Otways and from around Melbourne.
While the hair was generally somewhat greyer, the
memories were sharp and bodies active.
Class photographs of the day didn’t come with all the
names listed, so every efort is being made to identify those
1955 faces with the memories of much older bodies.
he search continues and anyone with information is
invited to pass it on to me.
he group will meet again on 26 March at Zous Café in

Thumbs up for chickens at Watle Hill
C
ONNECTING with nature, recycling
and the environment are elements
of learning that are very important
to the families of Wattle Hill Kindergarten
in Burwood, so there was great sadness late
last year when it was discovered that the
kindergarten’s two beloved pet chickens had
been taken by a fox.
Teachers Soi Galanis and Connie Mills had a number
of conversations with the children about how to ensure
chickens could live safely at the kindergarten,
and while some of their suggestions – such as
staying up late and shouting “BOO!” at the
fox or building a trap door for catching it –
were rejected, the idea of creating a new and
safer fox-proof coop was embraced.
When the call went out for help, there were
positive responses from parents, neighbours,
grandparents and teachers. Bunnings in Box
Hill kindly supported the project with a donation of the
majority of timber and wire required, and the balance was
provided through kindergarten fundraising activities.
A couple of handy dads created a plan and set about
clearing the space and erecting the frame. With the assistance

THE
TRAIL
TO GARDINERS CREEK
The bridge in Back Creek Reserve
O
UR fourth walk starts and inishes at Burwood
Railway Station (eastern side) or tram stop 53
(Lithgow Street) on Toorak Road (Melway 60 D6).
From the tram, walk south along Lithgow Street. If you
come from the train, you will join the walk one block along
Lithgow Street. Now, continuing south, take the informal
footpath on the railway side of Welfare Parade and discover
the indigenous lora reserve right in the heart of Burwood/
Ashburton.
You will reach a bridge over the line. Cross it, continue
south for 200 metres, and enter Summerhill Park. At the
playground you may also enjoy the Aussie animals “puzzle”!
Go south (downhill) to join the main Ferndale Trail, which
winds down through Hill’n’Dale Park, past trees with varying
barks (look for a spotted gum, an ironbark, and paperbarks)
and a BMX park. In about 30 minutes, you enter the large
Ferndale Park, a good place for a break, with playground,
large trees, BBQ, toilet and cofee shop.
Cross Glen Iris Road into Back Creek Reserve, continuing
gently downhill. Have you wondered why the Burwood area
has so many great linear parks? Many of them were actual
creeks, which have been covered over; this is clear when you
see the bridge over the path along this section. After about
10 minutes, you will hear the freeway as you enter Nettleton
Park. Look for a little notice from the local Friends group.
Turn left at the Gardiners Creek Trail (don’t cross this bridge,
but take a look). Signage tells you how busy this trail can be!
After another 10 minutes you will reach a second bridge.
Cross the creek here, turn hard left, then walk along an
informal track behind the guardrail and you will see a small
weir (which oxygenates the creek) and revegetation works.
After 200 metres, you rejoin the trail. Go under High
Street into a big picnic area with toilets and great historical
information. Again, you can walk on footpaths parallel with
the bike trail, exploring wetlands until, in about 15 minutes,
you come to a large duck pond with some friendly “locals”.
Cross Dunlop Street (pedestrian lights), and continue on
the trail for about 200 metres to a small pedestrian bridge
across the creek. Cross the creek and walk upstream one
block to Donald Street. Follow Donald Street away from
the creek, crossing Albion Road and continuing along
Chamberlain Street. Soon you will reach Watson Park,
which has a playground and a slightly hidden public toilet.
Walk diagonally across this park. You now have two choices:
you can head north (gently uphill along Munro Avenue) to
Ashburton shops for tasty goodies (and then to Ashburton
Station), or take the shorter route east along Baird Street,
turning Right/Left/Left/Right to Alamein Station, for
the train trip back to Burwood. You have walked 6 or 7
kilometres, depending upon how much “exploring” you have
done!

New psoriasis champion sought
H
ELEN
Bastian,
National
President of the Psoriasis
Association, oicially retired
in December 2013. Her vision,
drive, dedication and support for
members have seen the association
grow and develop into a 2000-strong
organisation.
Public relations and education have
been two key areas Helen has focused
on. Relecting on her 30 years of service
to the association, Helen said she has “visited
people in hospital, given talks to school classes
and community groups and attended several international
psoriasis conferences overseas”. Her aim has always been to
raise the proile and improve the general public’s knowledge
of psoriasis.
“Psoriasis is a common medical condition that occurs
when skin cells grow too quickly. he result can be seen as
inlamed, thickened and scaly areas of skin. It can also afect
other areas, such as ingers or toenails. In some cases the
person may have sore and inlamed joints at the same time.
When this occurs, it is called psoriatic
arthritis.’’ (Living with Psoriasis Booklet,
published by Psoriasis Australia, page 4)
Helen has worked tirelessly to
“gain acceptance from the medical
profession” for the association. In
particular, she has ensured pamphlets
on psoriasis have been distributed to as
many doctor’s rooms as possible.
Strategic alliances developed with other
medical professionals, associations and drug
companies have helped Helen to promote the
psoriasis association and its work. In return, she has
provided member access for surveys and drug trials which
have helped to develop new and improve existing treatments
for the condition.
Psoriasis Australia is currently seeking new volunteers to
help with telephone support and website development, and
to take on the leadership roles of President and Treasurer. If
you are interested, please call Nicole on (03) 9813 8080, or

HE word Easter comes from the name for the AngloSaxon goddess of light and spring, Eostre, and special
dishes were cooked in her honour to ensure a fertile
year. Most important of these was a small spiced bun, from
which our hot cross bun derives.
he baking of buns associated with religious oferings
goes back to remotest antiquity. he Egyptians ofered small
round cakes to the goddess of the moon, each marked with
her symbol, a representation of the horns of an ox. In ancient
Greece a bread containing the inest sifted lour and honey
had the name bous meaning “ox” and from which the word
bun is said to have originated. In time, the representation
of the horns became a simple cross, although it also has
been suggested that this was intended to symbolise the four
quarters of the moon.
he old association was transposed into a Christianised
form and the ritual of baking “hot cross buns” became
standard practice of the Easter celebration in English society.

For tertiary students of all kinds: world-standard
education and training resources right in the heart of
Melbourne’s eastern suburbs
OX Hill Institute is a premier Victorian multisector
vocational and higher education provider that celebrates
its 90-year anniversary in 2014.
he Institute is known for its innovative approach to
education in Australia and overseas – always striving to give
students an edge in the workforce, and providing the current
and emerging skills needed by industry.
Programs ofered range from certiicates through to degrees,
as well as lifestyle short courses and instruction in work skills.
Study success is closer than you think, because there are
four main campuses in the Box Hill area and a partnership
with the Centre for Adult Education (CAE) adds three more
in the Melbourne CBD.
Multi-award winner Box Hill Institute’s reputation for
the quality of its education and training – and the resulting
success of its students – has been recognised through a
number of major industry awards.
In November 2013, the Institute was named International
Training Provider of the Year at the Australian Training
Awards. And on two previous occasions it was the winner of
the Large Training Provider of the Year award at the Victorian
State Training Awards.
he Institute is not stopping there, though. It is continually
developing facilities and programs to meet the changing needs
of industry and students.
Real-world training in outstanding facilities hese days
a major concern for students is whether, after several years of
study and a considerable investment in their future, they will
actually get a job in which they can apply their skills.
Encouragingly, 93 per cent of Box Hill Institute graduates
go on to full-time employment or further study within six
months of course completion (NCVER, 2012).
One of the ways Box Hill Institute achieves high
employability outcomes for graduates is by ensuring
students train in modern facilities that simulate real work
environments.
Combined with industry-standard equipment and the
latest teaching and learning practices, these simulated industry
environments provide graduates with an extra advantage when
entering the workforce, upskilling qualiications or changing
careers.
Partnerships connect students with industry Several of
Box Hill Institute’s training workplaces have been developed
from unique partnerships with international organisations
such as Interlora (Flowers on Elgar) and Aveda (Aveda Day
Spa).
he Aveda Day Spa at Box Hill Institute is the only Aveda
training centre in the southern hemisphere. It is itted out
with the very latest spa treatment equipment and provides
Aveda Spa services and products to the public.
B
Bakers Delight is another well-known organisation that has
established a Centre of Excellence for bakery training at the
Box Hill Elgar Campus.
Several other training centres – for example, the veterinary
centre, Pets on Elgar – are open to the public for services and,
in some cases, the sale of retail products.
Other top facilities include the Nursing Skills Centre
of Excellence, which ofers hands-on training in a realistic
hospital setting. A simulated hospital with wards, operating
theatres and recovery rooms it has been designed in
consultation with nursing staf.
For health services across Victoria, the Nursing Skills
Centre of Excellence is the provider of choice for entry-level
skills development, refresher skills maintenance and advanced
skill programs.
New Integrated Technology Hub irst in Australia
he new, ultramodern $34 million Integrated Technology
Hub (ITH) at Box Hill Institute will provide collaborative
learning spaces for the building services and electromechanical
technology industries.
Operational in 2014, the ITH will provide world-class
facilities in a highly environmentally friendly building
designed to achieve a 5-star green star accreditation.
he ITH will also be home to the Refrigeration and
Climate Control Centre of Excellence and will provide the
main training facilities for the air conditioning and allied
industries.
Teaching strategies at the ITH will involve group-work
projects in which students who are studying for careers
in diferent vocational areas, such as building design,
engineering, and building construction, come together to
engage in problem-based learning.
More than 20 specialist degrees ofered Box Hill
Institute was one of the irst TAFE providers to deliver higher
education and now ofers a suite of specialist industry-focused
degrees covering a range of subject areas. In fact, the Institute
provides more than 20 degree courses comprising bachelors,
associates and masters. Even more degrees are planned for
launch during 2014.
As well, many pathways have been created – from a
diploma to a Box Hill Institute degree or a degree with a
partner university. he Institute’s educational partners include
the Australian Catholic University, Deakin University, La
Trobe University and Monash University.
Whereas a university degree usually has a strong theoretical
focus, at Box Hill Institute the focus is on the applied,
practical side; the emphasis is put on job skills, so that
graduates are ready to dive straight into the workforce.
Many of the Institute’s degree courses you won’t ind
ofered anywhere else. For example, the music business degree
is the only one of its type in Australia.
Students also beneit from smaller class sizes and close-knit
support, often with one-on-one help from teachers.
To see a list of Box Hill Institute courses, including degrees
and pathways to university, visit www.boxhill.edu.au Or

A
LL are welcome to
join us at 12 noon at
Highield Park at the
corner of Riversdale and Highield roads on 18 April.
Good Friday is the day Christians around the world
remember the death of Jesus and His sufering on the cross
in order that we can have life to the full. For more than 15
years the eight Churches within the Canterbury Council
of Churches have been welcoming the wider community
to join them at Highield Park to commemorate this
important day on the Christian calendar.
here are 12 crosses placed around the park and as
we walk from cross to cross there is meditative singing.
Banners from various churches represent each station, while
representatives from each of the churches do a reading and
prayer at each cross. Hot cross buns are then distributed
and people are encouraged to share their bun with someone
they do not know as a symbol of unity.

Home cooked goodness –

F
inding the time to cook a nutritious
meal every night can often be
challenging.
If this is the case for you, why not
freshen up your ideas in the kitchen
by calling on the team at Choice Fresh
Meals?
For two decades, they have been
keeping people well fed without the
hassle of preparation, providing meals to:
• Seniors, allowing them to remain
independent
• Busy professional people
• People with an ongoing illness who
are unable to cook for themselves.
One couple who have taken advantage
of the service Choice Fresh Meals offers
are Jack and Mavis Kennedy (both 86).
“The main reason we did it was that if
anything happens to me, Jack
would struggle to carry on
with preparing food,” Mavis
said. “The same goes for me
if something happened to
Jack. It’s a nice break from
cooking every night and they
have a large choice of meals …
everyone has something they
don’t like, so it is nice to have a
good range to choose from.”
“They have special seasonal
menus, and a Christmas menu
as well, so it is very easy”.
Apart from main evening
meals, they also take advantage of the
dessert options three nights a week.
“We have tried a few different services,
but we are very happy with Choice Fresh
Meals,” Mavis said. “It’s conveniently
delivered for us. They also now deliver
fresh bread and milk and I look forward
to not having to cook for the three nights
… it’s a nice break.”
Choice Fresh Meals deliver to homes all
over Melbourne, Geelong, Mornington
and Bellarine Peninsulas. The company
