Friday 27th March 2015
Dear Parents, Carers and Pupils
Welcome to our Year 5 Newsletter, Spring 2.
Although this has been a relatively short half term it has been packed full of inspiring
events including activities with our partner schools within the Academy.
News and Events
Year 5 Reading Competition
Thank you to those who took part in our Reading Competition. We saw Rona French
reading to Dottie the cow! Elise Ebeling looking incredibly comfy reading Dork Diaries in a
wheel barrow and Isabel Hollands reading Pink Chamelon by Fiona Dunbar at great heights
in a tractor!. Well done to all girls for sharing their unusual reading places!
World Book Day – Thursday 5th March
Thursday 5th March – My Birthday.
Dear Diary
I woke up very early, everywhere was pitch black and there
was a quiet rustling nearby. It was my birthday! I got up and
went into my parents’ bedroom. They sleepily told me it was
25 to six so I went back to bed.
When I next emerged I slipped on my dressing gown and
rushed downstairs. I saw my cake lingering on the side,
disguised as a swimming pool, then I fixed some cornflakes.
When both my older brothers had come down after a shower,
we opened the presents. Afterwards we got into our World
Book Day clothes and went to school. I was Mr Stink, I had a
face painted beard and ripped up tramp clothes. I paraded
like this all day! We skipped third lesson to decide who was
going to be our three house finalists. Eventually it was
decided, Sam, Leon and Hannah were picked.
At lunch I had my birthday table. Sydney, Charlotte, Ruby,
Emily, Elise, Amy and Ellie joined me and sang happy birthday
while a birthday badge was pinned to my chest. By Evie Pyle
(Mr Stink)

Harry Potter, Hermoine, Alice and The Mad Hatter were among the many characters who
visited Horringer Court on Thursday 5th March when we celebrated World Book Day. Our
usual timetable was suspended for lesson 3 for the pupils to showcase their creations. Pupils
were given the opportunity to present their character to their class and give a synopsis of
the book. Each house then picked three finalists from which the following overall winners
were chosen. Ocean Simmonite as The Mad Hatter, Leon Eden as Skul Duggery Pleasant
both Year 5 pupils and Joe Bradford, Year 6 as Gandalf. Congratulations to all!
Show My Homework
This Half Term also saw the launch of Show My Homework an easy to use online homework
and events calendar. The calendar will enable pupils and parents to view full details of
homework set together with the date it is due in. I will also use this to keep you informed of
up and coming Year 5 activities. The homework timetable may be viewed on our website at
http://www.burytrust.org/horringer/atschool/docs/Homework_Timetable.pdf
Once Upon A Time – Academy Apex Performance
Musical talents were on show during the Academy
performance of Once Upon a Time. Many Year 5s rehearsed
during this half term here with Mrs Bradley and together as
a whole cast at County Upper. Rio Seeley who had Mum, Dad,
Brother, Cousin, Auntie and Uncle in the audience said “I felt
pretty nervous and a bit excited before the performance,
relieved and proud afterwards. I enjoyed being taught by
Mrs Bradley as well as Mr Jarvis who was our conductor.”
Friday 13th March proved to be an action packed
day with many pupils arriving at school dressed head
to toe in red and donning bright red noses!
Firstly, Year 5s had their maths skills tested during
an Academy problem solving morning led by Mrs
Crichton.
Next pupils were led through a dance routine
choreographed by Year 8 Chloe Smith which resulted
in our fund raising Danceathon filmed by BBC. Many
thanks to pupils and parents who helped us raise
£345.57 for comic relief.
Mini Beast Visit
In support of our Science Curriculum we had an interesting visit from Daniel and his Zoo
Lab Mini Beasts on Wednesday 11th March. It was both a fun and informative morning
learning about the different characteristics of a Mollusc compared with that of an
Arthropod, the type of habitat these beasts live in and much more. Many pupils
completed the after session quiz with knowledge and enthusiasm. I would like to extend a
special mention to Luca Crescitelli who showed a great understanding of this topic.
Mothers’ Day Lunch – Monday 16th March 2015
In celebration of Mothers’ Day our Year 5 Mums were treated to a special lunch of Roast
Beef followed by apple crumble and custard. With thanks to our pianist Nina Sumerling
and vocalists Bronwyn Farthing and Martha Williams for entertaining our guests during
their lunch and to our waiting staff Polly Lupton, Ella Bell and Jack Warboys. Lunch was
followed by coffee and tea in the Year 5 area and a raffle which raised over £72 towards
our trip to Alder Carr Farm during the Summer Term.
Sports Clubs
Achievements
This half term has also seen Year 5 take
part in netball and football fixtures. The
netball team played their first
tournament at South Lee on Tuesday
24th March. Well done for an excellent
win against Thurston and a draw with
South Lee B. Also a few Year 5 pupils
have represented the school alongside
their older peers. Evan Williams and
Danny Fawcett played with the Year 6
Basketball Team and Jasmine Thomas
joined the Year 8 cricket team. Well
done to all pupils taking part in these and
other sporting activities.
Congratulations to Seth Newman on his
achievement in tennis, he won a Green
grade 4 at Boston recently – to Jay
Carter with his swimming successes,
bronze in the 100IM, 5 fantastic PB's and
a Silver in the 100m freestyle in the 10
age group – to William Hodgson and his
gymnastic achievements recently getting
silver and bronze medals in floor and
vault.
Bury St Edmunds County Upper Science Festival

Woodland Trust Sapling Planting
We have been fortunate to receive a donation of saplings
from the Woodland Trust which Year 5 have planted by
the playground. We are using this wonderful opportunity
to establish an environment that will attract wildlife,
whilst enhancing our school surroundings and offering an
area of study to support curriculum.
Reminders
After School Collection.
The Year 5 playground will continue to be open for after school collection.
Thank you for collecting your children from the adventure playground
area and well done to all pupils who leave the Year 5 entrance sensibly and walk along the
top path.
Year 5 Coffee and Chat Afternoons
Once a month we offer Year 5 Parents an opportunity to pop in for a tea/coffee and chat
with Mrs Johnson and myself. This is an opportunity to discuss any recent communications,
raise any general questions or concerns and look for any lost property! We look forward to
seeing you at our next drop-in on Thursday 16th April, future dates are published on our
website.
Morning Snack
It is a long morning for pupils so
to fuel their minds we would ask
you either provide money to buy a
healthy snack from our canteen or
provide one from home.
Water
It is important for the children to
keep hydrated during the day and
we therefore encourage them to
bring in clear water bottles with a
sports cap, which may be refilled
at the water fountains.
Kingswood Residential Visit
Full payment, of £190 is due by Friday 27th March. If you have any questions regarding this
visit please do not hesitate to contact me.

include these in our newsletters.

Special Mention
We would like to extend our thanks to Mr Terry Bannister who as our Crossing Patrol Person,
sees all pupils safely across the busy road both morning and afternoon. In a special interview
our Year 5 reporter, Dylan Coussell found out more. Terry has been employed as our Lollipop
Man for 18 months. Previously he was a lorry driver and enjoyed travelling to different
places in the UK. He now enjoys ‘having a joke with the pupils’ BUT doesn’t enjoy the rain!
Terry gets up at 5am every morning and his favourite breakfast is the traditional full
English!
Farewell
Last but by no means least we wish farewell to Jessica Rankin and sister Chloe in Year 6. We
wish them both the very best wishes at their new school.
We look forward to welcoming the pupils back after their Easter break on
Tuesday 14th April.
