PINWHEELS PLUS This scrappy patriotic quilt is very easy to make. These are very basic directions. I assume you know how to construct the block by looking at the diagram. Only one block is used. The numbers superimposed on the block are the cutting sizes. For this quilt, you need 48 blocks. Take care to keep your HST turned the same way in each block. (If you reverse them, make sure you reverse all of them) Sew four blocks together to get this Make 12 of these four patch units. Now sew them together in a 3x4 set. You will end up with a top similar to this: To finish, the first border is 2” finished and the second border is 4” finished. The top measures 60”x76” Here’s what you need to get sewing: (48) blue and white HST. Cut 24 blue squares and 24 white squares 2-7/8” to make these. All my blue/white HST were the same. (48) yellow and white HST. Cut 24 yellow squares and 24 white squares 2-7/8” to make these. All my yellows were the same fabric. I used four different whites. (48) red squares 2-1/2”x2-1/2” (48) white squares 2-1/2”x2-1/2” (48) red rectangles 2-1/2”x4-1/2” (96) white rectangles 2-1/2”x4-1/2” (96) red rectangles 2-1/2”x6-1/2” Fabric requirements: ¼ yd blue for HST or 1 FQ ¼ yd yellow for HST or 1 FQ 1/2 yd white for HST or 2 FQ 1-1/4 yd assorted whites or 5 FQ 2 yd assorted reds or 8 FQ Border #1: 6 strips cut 2-1/2” wide Border #2: 7 strips cut 4-1/4” wide Binding: 7 strips cut 2-1/2” wide or your preferred width. The “whites” are not truly white. They are a variety of small prints that read white from a distance. Same with the reds. The contrast between your reds and whites must be strong.
