Cairns Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. Information Booklet 2015 Surf Club Phone Number 4059 1263 SILVER SPONSOR BRONZE SPONSORS SPONSORS Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 1 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 Presidents Welcome Welcome to all existing and new members and families for the commencement of the 2015 Cairns Surf Lifesaving season. The club has never been in better shape. We are financially sound, have a good management team and great equipment. Our facilities will see the commencement of the next exciting stage of our clubrooms and buildings toward the end of 2015. This will cement our clubs standing not only within surf lifesaving communities in Cairns but in the North Queensland region. Competitively we have never been stronger, nor more capable, under the expert guidance of our club coach Mr James “Swampy” Marsh. He is assisted by the incumbent and enthusiastic Junior Activities Coordinator (JAC) Mr Paul Stevens and the stalwart and ever reliable Surf Sports Officer Ms. Belinda Marsh. Our gear steward, Mr Adrian Davies Roe will ensure that the club equipment available for training and competition will be in its best condition for all club members. Your administration team, Ms Marilyn Woods (Maz) full time administrator, Ms Tania Paterson (Part time admin assistant) and Ms Fiona Grant (Club Secretary) will happily facilitate your enquiries and registration needs and keep you fully up to date with club proceedings. Most enquiries this year however, should be answered by seeking reference to our newly activated club website, and I would ask that you acquaint yourself with this site as well as the SLSA Member’s Portal as your first line of enquiry. Our beautiful Supporters club, managed by Mr. Lawrence Green and Mr. Tomas Horak serves and proudly supports our surf lifesaving club in many ways. We would ask that you bring your friends and family to visit the club, to not only enjoy a good meal in the fabulous surroundings, but also to provide support to our club. Our main focus remains patrolling the beaches as a volunteer community service. Surf Lifesaving Queensland’s Motto is “Zero Preventable Deaths in Queensland”, and we rely on our patrol volunteers to provide this service every weekend from April through to October. We wish to continue with our proud service achievement from 2014 where we received 100% service compliance (i.e. no patrol breaches all year). This year we warmly welcome our new Club Captain Ms Eliza Ryan (ably assisted by Vice Captain, Swampy) who will manage patrol rosters and assist with member’s proficiencies, updates and lifesaving training. We have two highly motivated and enthusiastic Youth Leaders assisting and guiding our 2015 cadets. Ms. Aleisha Farrell (current Summer Surf Girl for 2014-15) and Ms. Crystal Janousek (Former SSG 2013-14). These young ladies will endeavour to engage our youth members with some great ideas and activities, which are aimed at developing skills, interest and leadership qualities in our young members. Lastly, a most important component of the overall SLSC training program, is led by Ms Annabel Grant (Chief Training Officer - C.T.O). Annabel has been busy planning courses and will coordinate and facilitate our 2015 training programs that will take Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 2 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 members from “Ordinary to Extraordinary!” I would implore you to get “on-board” and commit to these free courses as they become available. We are primarily a volunteer organisation, and we cannot operate without community assistance and the commitment, volunteerism and fundraising of others. There are many ways that parents and friends of Surf Lifesaving can help our club. Not just on the beach but behind the scenes as well. Please consider helping out! Volunteers make a club great. What you see at Cairns SLSC has been achieved by volunteerism - the dedication, commitment and hard work of many. Cairns SLSC offers an affordable, friendly, all inclusive, family orientated healthy lifestyle, where we aim to promote fun, fitness, competition, and training and provide a service to the community. We are local people, helping local communities. Although newly elected President this year, I have been personally involved with the CSLSC for the past ten years and have thoroughly enjoyed watching our four children attain important skills, form great friendships and be part of a nurturing and dedicated network of people who form the fabric of this club. Once again, I welcome you and trust that you will enjoy the 2015 surf season with us, and that you too, will take great pride in calling, Cairns SLSC home. 90 Years Strong | Patrolling in Paradise, Yours in surf lifesaving, Rob Paterson President Junior Activities Co-ordinator Hi to all existing and future club members and families, my name is Paul Stevens and I have the honour of being Cairns Surf Club’s Junior Activities Co-ordinator (JAC) for 2015. I have been a member of this club since 2007 when my eldest daughter was a Greencap, she is now in U15’s. I have four children who are all involved in Surf Lifesaving, and as my youngest is in U8’s this year, I plan to spend many more winter Sunday mornings on the beach at Palm Cove! To me surf lifesaving has a fantastic culture which you cannot help but be drawn into when you see your kids learning skills from as young as Greencaps, which they can build on every year to enable them to one day patrol the beach. With surf lifesaving also comes carnival competitions. I am still amazed at how quickly a young nippers’ confidence can grow in the water - whether it’s a Greencap who is scared and hesitant to go near the water, to an U9 who is learning to swim out and around the buoys for the first time, to our U15’s who will often swim and board for a couple of kilometres in a single training session. I want all our nippers to have a great year on the beach this year regardless of where they place in carnivals. At the end of the year I want all parents to be able to see an Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 3 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 improvement in their children’s abilities whether it is just as simple as enjoying the pleasure of the waves or being able to swim around the buoys without any assistance. My focus this year for the club is to involve as many parents as I can to help with our Sunday training sessions. Whether this is by signing up and completing your Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) or Bronze Medallion (BM) certificates to be able to help with water safety, or by helping on our weekly beach BBQ which is a major fundraiser for the club. Please feel free to introduce yourself on the beach to me. I am happy to listen to anyone’s suggestions or constructive criticism. Looking forward to a great year on the beach, Paul Stevens JAC Administrators Introduction Welcome to the Cairns SLSC. They can then be taken to either your swim teacher or swim coach, tested and signed off. The swim Teachers must be Austswim Accredited and Swim Coaches must hold a minimum of a Bronze Accreditation. Completed forms are to be handed into the JAC who will check that the Junior has passed and are able to commence training. Forms will then be processed and the award raised in Surf Guard. If the Junior member does not belong to a swim school, arrangements can be made with the JAC to complete the assessment at an appropriate time. No juniors can commence training on the beach until they have passed their Pool Proficiency (SLSA Guideline). Beach Competency: This can only be done once the junior has passed the pool competency. This proficiency will be conducted when the Age Managers are confident that the junior is ready. The junior must have attempted and been successful at least twice prior to the proficiency. Age Managers will submit Juniors’ names to the JAC the week prior. This enables the JAC to organise assessors and to raise appropriate paperwork for the competencies. Once passed the forms will be processed and the award raised in Surf Guard. Carnival Competency: This competency can only be done once the Junior has passed the Beach Competency. Age Managers will submit Juniors’ names to the JAC the week prior. This enables the JAC to organise assessors and to raise appropriate paperwork for the competencies. Once passed, the forms will be processed and the award raised in Surf Guard. The Carnival Competency will be done under competition conditions. Water safety will be a minimum of 3m away and behind the juniors to ensure that the assessors have an unhindered view of each child. A hindrance to the view of a junior may be deemed as not passing the competency. Age Managers will be responsible for submitting only the juniors that are ready for this competency and only once they have successfully swum the distance twice before. No Carnival Competency will be done the week prior to a carnival (Branch Guideline). As there is not enough time to ensure that both the club as well as branch can process the awards in time. It also does not allow Age Managers to formulate teams for the carnival and for the JAC to enter the competitors before the cut off time (which is usually the Monday before the carnival). Exceptions can occur due to extenuating circumstances and when this occurs will be discussed with the Assessors, JAC & Age Manager. We may offer a shortened time to enable us to get some of our “Run Swim Run” competencies done in the nets. Friday Afternoon Board Training Sessions Friday afternoon Training sessions are from 1630-1730hrs in front of the club. The training is only open to U9s and up and participants must have passed their Beach Competency (run swim run). The Juniors must wear stinger suits, pink High Vis Vests and club cap or they will not be able to participate. Sessions will only proceed if there is adequate number of water safety (ie. 1:5 ratio). These sessions are not offered on the Friday before a carnival. Water Safety Water safety is crucial during all training sessions. The SLSA Standards are as follows: Before the Beach Competency (run swim run) it is 1 water safety person:1 junior Once passed Beach Competency it is: For parents with an award (bronze/SRC) it is 1:10. It is always better to have more parents in the water as this tends to enhance the experience the juniors have. The club must keep accurate records reflecting the above standards as we can be audited at any time. If we do not have enough water safety to reflect these standards we may not be able to do any water training or only offer minimal water training. Preference will be given to those juniors who have passed their Beach Proficiency. It is for this reason that we encourage parents to join up and obtain their Bronze medallion or SRC. Many of our parents have started out doing this and have ended up loving it and have either gone on to be Age Managers, Assistant Age Managers or doing regular patrols or water safety. The Surf Club is not here to teach people how to swim. If your child is a weak swimmer or needs help with their swimming please contact your local swimming pool. It is recommended that juniors do at least three swimming squad sessions a week to maintain their fitness and water skills. Green Caps (Under 6 & Under 7 Age Groups) The U6 & U7 age groups (Greencaps) at the Cairns SLSC are a fun based category with lots of games and activities for the kids to take part in. With these age groups a parent or guardian must join the club as a member as well. We also need as much help as possible from the parents & guardians in these age groups to make the surf activities both safe and enjoyable. Juniors Signing in and Signing Out ALL Juniors MUST be Signed in/off at the start/completion of Nipper training. Each Age Group will have a folder with a sign in sheets. If you cannot find it please see your age group manager. This is a requirement of our insurance and it is a good check to know who is at the beach for nippers each day. Also age managers can give out any information that needed to be handed out to the parents. Sleepovers Please see table on P10 for dates for each age group’s sleepover. This is a popular activity where kids get to know each other and their Age Managers in a relaxed Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 11 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 atmosphere. We use this time to cover some of the information essential in their Awards, as well as having some fun team building exercises. Your child’s Age Manager will be in contact with you when it gets closer. Borrowing of Equipment We have enough boards for our training sessions which juniors will be encouraged to use. Boards are very expensive and as a club we are very proud that our equipment is in good condition and numbers, to allow all Juniors the opportunity of learning. Parents are asked to assist their child in cleaning and returning the boards at the end of each session, as this will help maintain the boards. We know that accidents happen, so if the board you are using gets damaged let your Age Manager know, and then he will inform the Gear Steward. This way we can get it repaired and back into use quickly. Unreported damage may result in the board eventually being unable to be repaired. You will notice that there are boards in our shed that are chained and unable to be used at training sessions. These are our newer boards which are reserved for use in Carnivals only. This provides our juniors with the best equipment to use when competing for our club. As members of Cairns SLSC you are able to borrow boards to use during the week. This can be arranged by contacting our Gear Steward - Adrian Davies-Roe on 0407 602 503. At the start of the season you will probably find parents selling second hand boards. You can sometimes pick up great bargains this way. If you are interested in finding one let the JAC or the administrators know, as they are usually the first to hear of any boards for sale. Photography Policy Each year, Clubs may apply to SLSQ (through their club) to obtain a ‘Club Photographers Pass’. SLSQ will process and issue a maximum of 4 passes per club and these passes are valid for all junior and senior club and Branch events only. This pass does not apply to State or National Championship events – NO passes will be issued for these. The pass is only valid for the current competition season. Club photographers must wear the pass and comply with any instructions from carnival Officials and may only receive limited access to the competition area. Members applying for a ‘Club Photographer Pass’ MUST already hold a current “Working With Children Check” Suitability Card deeming them suitable for interaction with children. Practical Notes for Parents & Competitors for Carnivals If this is your child’s first season as a Surf Club Member it would be good for them to enjoy it, do well and finish happy and free of injury. These are some practical notes that might help. The Night Before Make sure your child eats well and has all the sleep he or she needs. Preparation on the Morning Make sure your child has the right fuel for the day eg. fresh fruits, cereal and toast. Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 13 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 Be on time - your Age Manager will give you a time to arrive at the beach. Event Marshaling begins ½ hr before the start of the carnival. Carnival programs can change on the day, as all events are dependent on conditions and situations. Remember to slip, slop slap. Smear your Nipper with sunscreen and keep them coated during the course of the day. Competition Essentials At carnivals your child must wear their stinger suit, club cap and pink High Vis vest. In addition they will need the following: Goggles A minimum of two towels (more is better) A hat (the bigger the better) Windproof jacket (they can easily get cold) Water bottle Snacks Your Comfort There are three club marquees at each carnival, which are usually big enough to fit everybody in. Bring a director’s chair or folding chair, sunnies, sun protective gear and swimmers if you want them. You can bring your own food and drinks or you can buy them from the host club. Other Tips Problems will occur. You need to expect them, so try to avoid outrage and remember to give your child all the support they need. Please note that there is no margin for error on the first two points: a) Your child must start the race with their club cap on. Tie it tight with a double knot. b) If your child breaks at the start or cuts around a buoy or breaks in a relay they will be disqualified. There are no special dispensations because they are young, so if the worst happens comfort your child. Their Age Manager will explain to them what happened and what to do next time. Remember at this level all mistakes are a learning tool and so should not be made into a bigger drama than it is. c) Your child should let their Age Manager know where they are at all times. Please do not take your child from the beach or to another arena without their Age Manager’s knowledge. This is an important safety precaution. Many of the events are team events if a junior is missing it may result in the whole team being unable to compete. If you and your child are planning on leaving the carnival please let your Age Manager know. d) Some parents have no concept of fair play. You may well see things that will get you angry. Keep your cool for the sake of your child. If you see something that does concern you let your Age Manager or JAC know, and they can decide whether or not to raise it with the officials. After the Event Your child will be tired, so be understanding. Build up the positives, don’t dwell on the negatives. Some of the memorable moments from earlier carnivals, are not of a champion Junior winning by a mile, but of one giving 100%. Finally, make a point of enjoying it yourself as well. Carnivals are a very special part of surf and should be enjoyed not only by the participants but also by their families. Compiled by Sam Fifield/Cath Haug Page 14 of 16 Revised 25th March 2015 Parent Involvement Surf Life Saving has something for everyone, regardless of whether you are a strong swimmer or not. Below are brief descriptions of some of the more common roles within Surf Life Saving. Patrolling Lifesaver The Surf Rescue Certificate and Bronze Medallion (including the Certificate II in Public Safety) are the two entry level awards for someone who wishes to become a fully qualified patrolling lifesaver and/or water safety officer. These awards require an individual to have a reasonable swimming ability as holders of these awards may be required to rescue individuals in the sea. These awards provide a range of skills including surf awareness, rescue skills, first aid and resuscitation. Award Lifesaver For those members who are not strong swimmers but who still want to patrol the beach, you are able to complete lifesaving awards which do not include a swimming component. Such awards include First Aid, Resuscitation and Radio awards. Members who hold these awards are still able to patrol the beach by specialising in certain areas. Trainer If you have enjoyed teaching the children about lifesaving skills, then you may wish to consider becoming a trainer for other awards. Trainers are required to complete a Training Officer’s Certificate and they need to hold the award that they are training. For example, if you wish to train the First Aid certificate, you must hold the First Aid Certificate yourself. Assessor Assessors are the people responsible for assessing the competency of the Surf Life Saving and Nationally Accredited awards. To become an assessor, you are required to complete an assessor’s course and you will need to hold the award that you intend to assess. Members who wish to extend their skills in assessing may wish to do a full Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAA40104). Coach Coaches provide an important role in developing and improving the skills of members in surf sports. Coaches may choose to specialise in one discipline (e.g. beach sprinting) or choose to coach in a number of disciplines. Coaching accreditation comes in four levels (Foundation Coach, Development Coach, Performance Coach, and High Performance Coach). The Foundation coach’s accreditation is the level most suited to new coaches at club level. Official Officials are those people responsible for the conduct of surf sport events. There are a range of different roles undertaken by officials including referees, starters, judges, recorders, marshals, etc across all of the surf sports disciplines. Again, Officials accreditation comes in three levels (Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3). New officials will need to complete a Level 1 Officials accreditation. Age Manager The Age Manager is responsible for the caring and nurturing of our future Surf Lifesavers. The role of an Age Manager is to both develop our Junior Activities members into Surf Lifesavers and to provide a supportive environment in which they can learn and grow.
