Caldwell Serving Caldwell County North Carolina Volume 1, Issue 33 www.CaldwellJournal.com Free Thursday, May 14, 2015 Rebirth of the Buffalo Mercantile Company and Cafe By Mark Jackson {Caldwell Journal}...The Buffalo Mercantile Company and Café, formerly known as, Todd's Country Store and Todd's Place for many years will soon be brought back to life. This store is located in the northeastern portion of Caldwell County on Buffalo Cove Road. The new owner is calling this a “project of true love” and is very excited and passionate about honoring the Todd Family Tradition as well. The Buffalo Mercantile Co. first opened in 1897 and was rebuilt in 1924 utilizing its own recycled materials. It has survived the depression, floods, the modern day corporate shifts in retail and even the passing of its gentle shop keeper Mr. Todd. Many people have fond memories of visiting this store. The new owner is committed to keeping the new Buffalo Mercantile Co. as original as possible and keeping the tradition alive. This historic store has developed into a destination which will include local food, retail items and a cafe in the back. The café will offer fresh made breakfast, sandwiches, pizza, salads, an ice cream shop, bakery, and coffee shop. After your meal or snack, head out back to the creek and relax in an Adirondack chair around the fire pit or quench your thirst from their mountain spring from a tin cup. A visit to the new Buffalo Mercantile Co. will be like taking a step back in time. Trout fishing, cycling, and a motorcycle cruise are some of the other activities offered near the store. Robin’s Nest Children’s Advocacy Center of Caldwell County is a non-profit agency that helps local children and youth, ages 0 to 18, who have been severely physically and sexually abused. Since the facility opened in 2011, more than 600 infants, children or teenagers have received coordinated services for abuse, and it requires local fiscal support to serve these victims. “The donations will change the future of abused children in Caldwell County,” said Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone. “We need to call severe child abuse what it is – a scourge in our community, and we must do what we can to eliminate any abuse from happening to children educated in the Caldwell County Schools.” Thursday, May 14, 2015 3 2015 “Change for Children” Campaign Takes Flight Continued from page 2... They will also be filming. The original Todd family has recorded its history since World War One and made a DVD available. In fact, North Carolina PBS “Our Vanishing Americana” has featured this magical place cradled by the Appalachian Mountains. NOW, in keeping with those original families’ traditions, we will be documenting this next stage in the ol' gal’s life. This will include the family & any community willing. “Cameras will follow our venture to prove that perhaps...they knew better about some things in 1924, than where we have drifted as a society in 2015” stated Tom Kassab. “Only changes we think Mr. Todd would have made if he were here now will happen, and we will have the Todd/Miller family as advisory.” So, who is the new owner? The new owner has stated “First, it IS a privilege!” “Thank you for allowing a stranger who fell in total love with this place, the community and its people to share in on this. It WILL be a community venture.” The new owner is Tom Kassab. Tom has roots in Michigan, Florida, South Carolina and right here in the mountains of Deep Gap, North Carolina...a businessman by trade, he has manufactured restaurant equipment and furniture as well as a being military contractor to the United States Government. The staff includes: Ken Jermon, Manager and Executive Chef, is passionate about performing his magic in the kitchen. Born in Queens, NY and raised in Connecticut, a transplant to Greenville, South Carolina, Ken has owned his own restaurant and is honored to be part of this great endeavor. Teal Triplett, Customer Service Associate, is the Granddaughter of Herb and Mary Miller, Connie Watson, Customer Service Associate is a neighbor and local artist. Lauren Kassab (Tom’s daughter) and Katya Butte, Customer Service Associates will be helping out during summer vacation. Back in the early 90’s, while visiting his cabin in the area, Tom visited the store and became friends with Herb and Mary Miller, children of the original owner. His first visit to Todd’s Country Store...glass gas pumps, an old wood bench full of stories no doubt and then a peek in the window revealed a wooden heaven, practically untouched. Love at first site for sure! “When I found out the store had closed, my heart dropped and I felt compelled to take on bringing her back to life.” The new Buffalo Mercantile Company and Café will be a true historic destination in the northeast portion of Caldwell County. Words and photographs will not do justice to this old store, you just need to plan a visit to take in all of the rich history it has to offer. I can promise you will feel right at home and will not want to leave! “Mr. Todd would have been proud to see the re-birth of his baby! I'm happy to announce that the store/ cafe is alive and well... and is ready to celebrate its reopening on Saturday, May 23rd. Please come join us for live blue grass music, great food and wonderful friends. The celebration begins 12 noon until 4pm. We hope to see you there!” Tom Kassab www.buffalomercantilecompany.com www.facebook.com/buffalomercantileco Visit www.caldwelljournal.com for more photographs and a link to some very special videos that tell the great history of Todd’s Country Store. Despite the increasing emphasis on standardized testing, the arts have continued to be an integral component of education for these often financially challenged students. Although the community has always recognized the importance of art, decades of poor funding has left the stage nearly inoperative for close to 30 years. Last year, a group of impassioned teachers, students and community activists had a vision to restore and revitalize our stage. For the first time in decades, our little school held a Christmas Musical on that stage. Utilizing our entire student population, the performance featured our 5th grade students as the actors and included Kindergarten through 4th grade students as extras and singers. The stage sets were also designed and constructed by our middle school students. The performance was unequivocally deemed a rousing success by the community; however the production was in fact hindered by technical difficulties resulting from antiquated sound and lighting equipment and broken stage gear. Our dream is to completely revitalize our stage and create a theater program at Happy Valley that engages the student body and helps inspire a renewed sense of pride into this hard working Appalachian community. In order to do this, we are in desperate need of a few critical items: 1) A modern sound system with wireless, hands-free and boom microphones. 2) A new stage curtain with functional hardware. 3) Acoustical boards to facilitate the proper distribution of sound throughout the theatrical space. 4) A Spotlight and stage lighting. 5) The removal and disposal or donation of old bleachers on the stage. 6) A balcony constructed to allow our stage to accommodate the entire student body. Our objective is to use our stage every year for a variety of purposes including school wide musical and dramatic performances, band and chorus concerts, the Annual Cultural Arts Fair, elementary reader’s theater, talent shows, community music performances, educational presentations, and graduation ceremonies. It is our hope that the sharing of our story will bring community support for our students and our rising theater program. Our students, faculty, staff, and the entire community will benefit from the impact of this revitalization. The award honors a faculty member who characterizes personal dedication, concern for student welfare and academic excellence. In his charge, CCC&TI President Dr. Kenneth A. Boham congratulated the graduates, and thanked the college’s faculty and staff for their hard work. “Savor the feeling tonight,” Boham said. “It does truly show that you have been successful and accomplished a goal. But also remember that tonight is a celebration. It’s not an ending.” He also acknowledged CCC&TI’s founding president, Dr. H. Edwin Beam, who passed away earlier this year. Boham said that Beam had addressed the Class of 2014 as part of last year’s graduation, and assured the Class of 2015 that Beam was present for their ceremony as well. “We experienced a great loss this year with the passing of Dr. Beam, but I know that he is here with us tonight and smiling down upon us,” Boham said. Boham finished the ceremony by conferring to graduates all the rights and privileges of their respective degrees and having them turn their tassels signifying their status as graduates. “Job well done,” said Boham, “and, we wish you Godspeed.” Photo by CCC&TI. Electric cooperatives across the nation are celebrating the 51st year of helping young men and women learn about American government, U.S. history and the cooperative business model. Students are also offered opportunities to earn college scholarships of up to $6,500. Four students from among a field of approximately twenty candidates across Blue Ridge Electric’s service area were selected for the honor. Winners were selected based on their application and a three- to five-minute speech on how to best communicate to members. Youth Tourists from Blue Ridge Electric are: These students will join approximately 50 other North Carolina cooperative-sponsored students in June to begin their six-day, all-expense-paid trip. Since its beginning in the 1950s, the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has assisted more than 40,000 students in learning about electric cooperatives, American history and the United States government. For some student winners, the tour has been their first opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. The tour seeks to make students more aware of the role of cooperatives and encourage participation in leadership and speaking opportunities. As part of the tour, students will visit the U.S. Capitol, meet government officials and learn about how the federal government functions. 19 The Good Word from the Bible ...a weekly Inspirational Message for today’s life-styles... Revelation 3:16 “Because thou art lukewarm and neither cold nor hot; I will spew thee out of my mouth.” We cannot be half the Lord’s and half the worlds. We are not God’s people unless we are His people whole-heartedly. We are to love the Lord with all the heart, with all the soul, with all the mind, and with all our strength. We cannot be double-minded. We cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils. We cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. It must be all the way for God. No person can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one and despise the other. We cannot serve God and mammon. If you love your sweetheart, you do not want your sweetheart to be lukewarm between you and another sweetheart. With God, we are to be either for God or for the enemy. No person can occupy a neutral position. A person who does not give himself wholly to God is under the control of another power, listening to another voice. Half-and-half service for God and His enemy will get a person spewed out. By Dr. Herb Cole Of The Natural Food Store 20 Thursday, May 14, 2015 The Ole’ Store We Would Like To Thank Our Customers! They are on the cutting edge of a new discipline of performance bicycles called “Gravel Grinders.” The owners are cyclists at heart and have great passion for their sport. They ride on the gravel roads of Caldwell County out of pure enjoyment and to ensure their products are tried and true, and recently they hosted the “The Bootlegger 100 Proof,” a 100 mile ride mostly on the dirt roads in Caldwell County. “We rode smoothly and steadily, separating into little groups of like-minded riders, enjoying the route, the scenery and the company of others. A rest stop at Ole Betsey’s Country Store in Mortimer was the first regroup point. After we refilled water bottles, and adjusted gear and clothing, the 100 mile participants headed off down Brown Mountain Beach Road and the 60 mile participants continued on NC 90 heading to climb back up and over Globe Mountain Road.” A challenging ride to say the least… Grava Bikes is very interested in the local history and charm of the back roads here in Caldwell County and has adopted a historical theme to building bikes. Their first two bikes had names such as, The Revenuer and The Maple Sally. The Revenuer is their steel frame and it is hand built in the US. Grava has launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help finance the first production run of The Revenuer. The Maple Sally is Grava’s carbon fiber frameset and is currently being redesigned and updated. Grava anticipates having the first prototype in their hands in mid-May. Grava also has additional model designs that they are working on. What is a Gravel Grinder? “Challenging terrain, stunning scenery, solitude and a sense of satisfying, shared exhaustion are what gravel riding is all about.” Road and cyclocross bikes have been adapted to become “gravel grinders” for quite some time. These purpose built bikes are being designed to take abuse, and lots of it, while still being fast and efficient. Similar to a road bike to the untrained eye, they usually feature disc brakes for better braking in wet, dirty conditions, stout frames that won’t concede strength to weight, a more upright and slack geometry with a longer wheelbase for increased stability, and enough frame clearance for wider tires that improve off-road traction. What is Cyclocross? It is a very specific type of bike racing. For the most part, the course is off-road but sometimes include portions of pavement. You can expect to encounter grass, dirt, mud, gravel, sand, and a whole slew of other assortments and combinations. Continued on page 23... Thursday, May 14, 2015 23 New business in Lenoir to manufacture multi-discipline performance bikes Continued from page 22… The mission of Grava Bikes is to build drop bar bikes capable of performing at the highest level in road racing, gravel/ dirt road events (commonly known as gravel grinders), and in cyclocross. Grava intends to eliminate the need for a specific bike for each discipline. All of the Grava bikes include front and rear disc brakes, a feature that is just now starting to catch on in the road bike market currently dominated by large name brands. Grava’s steel bike is one of the first performance oriented steel bikes in this market segment to have front and rear thru axles. Grava is updating their carbon frameset to have front and rear thru axles as well. These design features will be standard across the line from this point forward. Grava is also dedicated to utilizing components that are locally manufactured in nature with two such components coming from Asheville and South Carolina. Grava Bikes intends to create the one bike that will shine in all three disciplines of drop bar riding. “The Grava lineup threads the needle of creating a high performance road bike that is perfectly at home on gravel-grinder and Roubaix-style courses, hours on hard tarmac, and handles the fast-paced twists and turns of cyclocross racing with aplomb.” Multiple bikes for multiple disciplines are a thing of the past. Grava bikes are built for whatever road you choose to take. The North Carolina Department of Transportation will extend the left turn lane, and add a right turn lane to Nuway Circle at U.S. 321. Two large employers, Blue Ridge EMC and Greer Laboratories, are located on Nuway Circle, along with other businesses. The new road configuration will help prevent delays and backups, particularly during shift changes. The Board of Transportation approved spending $149,000 for the improved intersection Thursday at its monthly meeting in Raleigh. “We’re pleased to improve traffic flow for these industries and their employees,” said James Palermo, Division 11 board member. “We appreciate our partnership and collaboration with the City of Lenoir, and look forward to getting this project complete.” NCDOT can now begin surveying and designing the project. Construction could begin as early as late Fall, and should take about three months. The Caldwell Journal weekly paper is always available online to read!!!
