June Chronicle - Calvary United Methodist Church

The
June 2015
Chronicle
Each month, this newsletter of Calvary Church is published to provide news
and information about upcoming events and ministries in the life of Calvary
Church, and to celebrate people and happenings in what God has done, is doing,
and will do in us. Typically, this has been a printed item, mailed out to members
and regular non-members, with a few email recipients. Beginning with the JULY,
2015 edition, we will be sending the Chronicle by email to you (except for those
without email addresses or those who specifically request paper copies – who will
continue to receive paper copies mailed to them via surface mail). Full copies will
also be available in the Main Lobby for visitors and guests. This transition to electronic mailing will significantly reduce paper, copying, and mailing costs, and also
allow us to include pictures and other visuals in color, variety, and number. If you
have an email address, please make sure that you provide it to the church office
([email protected]) to receive the Chronicle, weekly e-news, and other items
which are sent electronically. Look for it arriving to you soon!
Worship by the Water
Beginning June 21, the 8:45 worship
service will be held outside, weather
permitting. Bring a chair or a blanket
and join us out back by the creek!
A moment with Mernie...
“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
A fresh summer breeze is blowing through Calvary United Methodist Church. It follows the mighty wind of
Pentecost that each year reminds us of the birth of the church. Just as birth brings new life, opportunities, and
expectations, so, too, does the breeze we find blowing through our congregation. Summer brings fresh opportunities to get together, ask questions of faith, and engage in a different way. We can discover new expectations God
has for the call on our lives. Will you open the window to let in the breeze or will you stay in place?
Many of you, if we are honest, have grown up with the idea that summer is a time to take off from church.
Perhaps it is due to the lengthening of daylight hours or change in work and study routines. Perhaps it is vacation
time or seasonal commitments with family and friends. There is a problem with this---not with the daylight hours,
changing routines, vacation or commitments, but with the idea of taking a season off from your faith. What happens when we don’t nurture a relationship? The relationship withers and, if left too long, can even die. The same
holds true for our relationship with God and each other. What happens to the childlike faith that never asks questions? It never grows into the fullness of understanding intended for it. The same holds true for our understanding of God and what it means to be God’s people.
The concern is nothing new. It reminds me of the apostle Paul’s passionate plea to the Galatians that begins, “My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you...” (Galatians
4:19). The plea shows Paul’s concern over Galatians letting forces come between them and God. Isn’t that what
happens when we permit changing routines, vacation, or commitments to interrupt our devotion and faith formation times?
We are entering the time of year after Pentecost that is sometimes referred to as “ordinary time”. Some
mistakenly equate it with “unexciting” time. Do not let the name fool you! It is called “ordinary”, because we
count the Sundays with ordinal numbers (first, second, third) instead of with cardinal numbers (one, two, three).
This church season may not include Christmas or Easter celebrations, but excitement often comes with contrast.
Consider for a moment what that contrast means in terms of your faith and worship life for this season after Pentecost. The change of pace or schedule that summer brings can give space for visioning and new practices that excite us. It can afford us time to nourish relationships in different ways.
Take this season to be refreshed in the church. Open the window a little wider to let in the breeze.
Peace and joy,
Mernie

MUSIC & ARTS NEWS
Why isn’t all the new A/V upgrade completed yet?
Well, like most construction projects, there are unforeseen delays while the work sometimes
takes longer than anticipated. However, we are very close to being ready to have all aspects
online. By the time you read this, you hopefully will have noticed an improvement in your
ability to hear in the sanctuary, and all equipment should be in place, if not yet running. The
monitor planned for the leaders in the chancel had to be moved to the balcony lip because
to run wires through the concrete floor to the modesty walls in the front of the sanctuary
proved to be very costly and unfeasible. Sometimes adjustments have to be made for everything to work without greatly escalating the costs, and our installation team, Doug Sweely
and Randy Marshall, have taken great care to stay within budget. We thank them for the
hundreds of hours they have put into this project. We’ve had a few members of the congregation (including youth!) express an interest in training to operate the equipment, and could
use a few more to have complete teams for each service. Please pass along your interest to
Stan Livengood at [email protected].
Thank you for your participation and support!
We have completed a wonderful season of music and arts in our worship services, concert
series, and Fine Arts Festival. Highlights have included hosting the Clare College Choir and
the LSO, great choral and instrumental pieces for special Sundays, and seeing the fantastic
art in the parlor during the Fine Arts Festival. We certainly have some talented artists
among us! We appreciate all those who participate in our music and arts ministry through
choirs, brass ensemble, solos, liturgical dance, concert attendance, and donations to the
concert series. It is a joy to see and hear the talents that God gives to His creation.

Art from the students at
Calvary Center School was
on display in the Church
Parlor during Fine Arts
Week.

UM WOMEN
This morning at church I discovered the new presentation on the United Methodist Women’s bulletin board.
Sandy Poland had recently put something new on the
board so this morning I stopped by to check it out.
The heading is as follows; A Christian School teacher
asked her class to look at TV commercials to see if
they could use them to communicate ideas ABOUT
GOD. What they came up with is on the bulletin
board. The responses start with God is like.
As I stood there reading the children’s input a group
gathered around. Soon we were pointing to the ones
we liked best and discussing what timely messages
they have. Stop by the bulletin board. It is located
next to Pastor Mernie’s office. Maybe there will be a
group and a lively discussion just like the one I had on
Sunday.
Just a reminder:

MISSIONS
The Mission Team is sponsoring a Mesoamerican pot
luck dinner and a presentation by the 2015 Guatemala Mission Team. They have returned safely from
their 9 day trip to the Pacific coastal plains of Guatemala. Please join us in the fellowship hall on Wednesday, June 24. Dinner will be at 6 pm with the program
afterwards. For further information please call Nelson
Gardner, Calvary Guatemala Team Coordinator at
443-995-0606.
KASAMBALA MEDICAL CLINIC IN MALAWI - a mission
that Calvary supports, has made a special request for
financial assistance to help provide food and medicines following a severe drought that has dried up the
crops. Children are going hungry, experiencing extreme malnourishment, and dying. Our Missions
Ministry Team has approved an immediate $5,000
donation from our 2015 Endowment Fund Assistance/Support to help with the relief. We are asking
the congregation to match some or all of these funds
so that every dollar will be doubled. Please make
checks payable to Calvary UMC and mark “Malawi
Relief” by June 15. Thank you.
A special thank you to all who contributed to the
Lenten offering this year. Your generosity resulted
in our being able to distribute $3,150.67 equally
among the Lighthouse Shelter, "Imagine No Malaria"
and the Appalachian Service Project.

UNITED METHODIST MEN
SAVE THE DATE & TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME with the KIDS & MIDS
Hey, y’all, the UMM is once again sponsoring the baseball event of the summer as
the Bowie Baysox entertain the NEW HAMPSHIRE FISHER CATS at PG County Stadium on Friday evening, August 7 at 1835. The evening will feature a picnic buffet,
fireworks, silliness between innings, and 1100 future Naval officers (we call them
Plebes) ) in their whites for the first time. (Pretty snappy salutes for the National Anthem) Please join us and bring the kids and grandkids (great playground available)! We will be upstairs at the Severn Deck, overlooking the first base line and under cover.
Meetings and Missions
The Men of Calvary are invited to gather on Tuesday evening, June 16, for an evening of fellowship and faith.
In honor of the greatest generation and the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, our speaker will be a WWII
vet who was shot down over France and escaped. Please join us to share the adventure and honor one who
served. Dining (a safe bet is pizza) will begin at 6:30 with fellowship to follow.
At the May meeting representatives of the Arundel House of Hope talked about the goals and achievements of
their organization. This included stories relating to the successes of the Shower Trailer.
There UMM will not meet in July, then gather again in August. Representatives from Chrysalis House will join
us on August 18.
The Shower Ministry
Is up and running again every Tuesday evening. If you would like to step up and help those who need a helping
hand, please contact Rob Bibblecomb ([email protected]) or drop by around 5:30 pm in the lower lot.
The Parking Pros
It’s only June, but September is coming along with a whole lot of Navy football fans looking for a place to park,
and for a small donation, said fans can be accommodated. Season opener is September 5 as the Mids host Colgate. (East Carolina comes in on 9/19; the Boys for Boulder on 10/3, the Green Wave on 10/24; South Florida
on 10/31 and the Methodist Mustangs of SMU on 11/14. Good times and good money.) Great way to spend a
few hours on a lovely autumnal afternoon.
God Bless,
Dave Myers
PLEASE REMEMBER:
All men of Calvary are UMM members.
Just share your name and some basic contact info to join our
group or just come to our monthly meeting—we are a friendly
group. You can serve at will and when you can. Contact information can be sent to [email protected] or
