The Jan Grier Memorial Award Jan Grier’s career in dentistry spanned over 30 years following her graduation from the Certified Dental Assistant Program at Camosun College in 1978. Jan’s valuable contributions to the dental profession throughout her career included serving as: President of the Victoria and District CDA Society, President of the Certified Dental Assistants of BC, and BC Representative to the Canadian Dental Assistant Association Board of Directors. Jan also served on the Council of the College of Dental Surgeons of BC and received their Distinguished Service Award in 2002. In memory of Jan’s dedication to the profession of dentistry and certified dental assisting, Dr. Chris Souliotis, Dr. Sean Compton, and Dr. Alina Toaxen of the Saanich Dental Group will provide a $1,000.00 annual award for a deserving Camosun College Certified Dental Assistant student. Who will be considered for the Jan Grier Memorial Award? The applicant must: 1. Be currently enrolled as a full-time Certified Dental Assistant student in good standing at Camosun College, Victoria, BC; 2. Be a student member of Certified Dental Assistants of BC; 3. Have achieved a high and consistent standard in both theory and clinical skills; 4. Have demonstrated professionalism and leadership in various learning environments and; 5. Have shown initiative to promote oral health in the local community. Submission criteria: 1. Selection of the award recipient shall be based on the student’s double-spaced, word processed essay of 1,250 (minimum) to 1,750 (maximum) words, developed from the following topic: How do you see yourself making a significant contribution to the dental profession as a Certified Dental Assistant? 2. The selection committee will be looking for originality in the essay, which could include drawing from personal and workplace experiences and discussions or interviews with oral health care professionals. The committee is not seeking a statistical research essay. 3.
