The Monarch Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild Of Texas November 2012 Volume 5, Issue 3 FROM THE DESK OF THE PRESIDENT Sally Staner My quilting hobby has gone from just that, an occasional hobby, to a lifelong learning experience, especially since I joined CPQG 2 years ago. I have taken many wonderful workshops and learned so much through the workshop opportunities offered by our guild. The various instructors have tweaked my interest in color, techniques, and patterns which have broadened my quilting horizons. I am now not afraid of flying geese, appliqué, or even paper piecing. Though I may not be proficient in them, at least I’m trying! I would encourage each of you to not pass up the wonderful opportunity to learn from nationally acclaimed instructors from all over the USA who come to our guild every month. You get to learn new skills while at the same time enjoying the fun of learning with your CPQG friends in a nonthreatening environment. October’s workshop was so worthwhile. The pattern was not difficult and I learned several new tips to make piecing easier. I can’t wait for November’s workshop where I hope to improve my appliqué skills. Hope to see you there – if not at the November workshop then at another one of the upcoming workshops! Sally Wanted: Energetic, enthusiastic, CPQG member with computer skills, to serve as Vice President of Membership. If you’d like to help promote and grow our guild, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Sally Staner at [email protected]. We are grateful to ALL our friends who help complete projects, donate fabrics, and your time. A special shout to Nicole Rivera and her students who volunteered to quilt 16 tops at her Sugar Land studio. Thanks, Darleen for delivering them. If you have cat pillows for the No-Kill Cat Shelter, please bring them. This project will run through December. Ten Bo's Place quilts are in the process of being completed. I will be delivering these soon and will be trying a different process for this on-going project. Projects for those who have committed prior to the delivery/pickup date will be collected. Research is in progress to assess the need for potential donations to Fisher House, Richmond State School, Caring Hands, and Cowgirls and Cowboys Organizations. We gladly take any donations of fabric, batting, tools, orphan blocks, etc. --- to help with the work we do. QUILTS OF VALOR Barbara Baxter October 19th was a Quilt of Valor sew-in at Quilters Cottage. Nine ladies came prepared to sew. And, they did sew! Nine tops were sewn and three others were taken home to be completed later. On September 29th, I turned in 16 QOV quilts and presentation cases to our QOV Regional Co-coordinator, Cynthia Chaffee. Since my January challenge to you as guild members, we have turned in to QOV 24 quilts and presentation cases. Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 8th as our next sew-in again at Quilters Cottage. Volume 5, Issue 3 Page 5 QUILTING BEES Candy Horsley Back in the late 1980’s a group of quilters branched off from the Chimney Rock Bee and started a new bee in the Pecan Grove area. Since then, members have come and gone leaving Joan Nilsen, our guild’s featured artist at the 2012 Showcase, as the only original member. Back then the name of this group was the Pitts Road Piecers, since they met in the fire station on Pitts Road for over 20 years. As the years went by, the stairs got steeper so a new home was found. They now meet at Joy Lutheran Church, 717 FM 359 in Richmond, from 10 – 2 every Wednesday. This group welcomes new members so bring a lunch and join them! Most of the 5 – 10 regulars do handwork, working on individual projects. Occasionally a machine shows up, but not too often. Each summer this bee enjoys a field trip to The Painted Pony in La Porte, and they also have a December Christmas luncheon. For more information, contact Joan at 281 341-6330. CPQG is associated with several area quilting and fiber arts bees. These are a great way to meet others with like interests. New members are always welcome. For meeting days, times and places, please check our website at www.cpqg.org Volume 5, Issue 3 Page 6 FALL FESITVAL Julie Dayton The First United Methodist Church’s Fall Festival will be on Saturday, November 10th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please plan on coming by the guild’s booth to do some Christmas shopping. Many wonderful hand-crafted items have been made and donated by our talented and generous guild members! Rumor has it that the church ladies serve an excellent lunch too! If you have any items to donate for the bazaar, please bring them to the meeting on Wednesday, November 7, 2012. ANYSOLDIER.COM Karen Shivley Through the Quilts of Valor group, we are working to help a detachment of soldiers based in a far outpost in Afghanistan. The information below was handed out at the daytime meeting. A collection jar will be set up at the QOV table, accepting donations to help us cover postage costs. Any additional monies will be directed to purchasing items that these guys might need. You help is needed. Our goal is to send these 20 soldiers a quilt each to help keep them warm in their cold climate, along with items listed below or anything else that might make them feel just a bit better. Please call or e-mail Karen Shively or Barbara Baxter if you have any questions. Here is the request for help sent by Marine Capt. Matthew J. Malinowski: “We are a small detachment of Marines, embedded with primarily the Georgian Army (country not the state). We have power at times, no real means to heat up food and the only potable water we have is bottled. Our living conditions are sparse but manageable. It appears that this winter will be colder than it was when we were here two and a half years ago. Our area has no store/exchange/PX to purchase anything, to include the little luxuries or even necessities like additional cold weather gear, laundry detergent, soap, candy, jerky, etc. We rely solely on additional supplies and necessities being air dropped to us from our main camp where we have other Marines from our unit stationed.” “The Marines that are stationed with me are from the four corners of the USA, from Maine, Florida, California and Alaska, not to forget states like Texas, Michigan, Arizona, and Ohio. The age range for us is as young as 19 to the age of 32. Half of my detachment is on their first deployment with a few on their second or third tour in Afghanistan. We are a tight knit bunch that share anything and all that we have with each other.” Volume 5, Issue 3 Page 7 BEES AND BLOSSOMS Karen Shively November Birthdays November 4 Grace Clarke November 5 Barbara Young November 8 Linda Heiskell November 10 Donna Pyle November 12 Johnnie Wiley November 14 Janice Alee November 17 Martha Baldwin November 22 Susie Doe November 23 Sydney Stilling November 28 Trena Stephens MEMBERSHIP Karen Shivley Coastal Prairie started their new fiscal year as of September 1, 2012. Respectfully submitted Joyce Jackson Volume 5, Issue 3 Page 11 LIBRARY Linda Towle Did you know that CPQG has a library with over 400 books that members can borrow? Here’s info on just a couple of those titles: If you like Sunbonnet Sue, you might want to check out Sunbonnet Sue Celebrates the Holidays, or Sunbonnet Sue and Scottie Too. In the holiday book Sue dances around a maypole, celebrates Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. These patterns are appliqué. In Sunbonnet Sue and Scottie Too the patterns are shown in applique and in embroidery. Sue is wearing overalls and a straw hat, in this book, as she plays with her Scottie dog. Sue pulls Scottie in a wagon, gives him a bath, they play fetch and have a tea party. Sue walks on stilts, jumps over a sprinkler, flies a kite, eats an ice cream cone, plays hula hoop, and participates in many other childhood activities. The book shows both quilts and wall hangings, some done in applique, some done in embroidery. If you would like to borrow either of these books, or any of our other books, please e-mail me at [email protected] and I will bring them to the next meeting. For a list of titles that can be checked out, please go to the website at www.cpqg.org.
