At The Center, we are here to provide support and guidance to help reduce the pain and control the fear. We are here to work with our participants ‘To Be”. As a member of the survivors group, Mary Kay found comfort and clarity in talking to others who were going through similar experiences. Her husband, Dr. John Brooks, said, “She looked forward to the group meetings; they made her happy.” Mary Kay Brooks holding her granddaughter. Sadly, Mary Kay passed in May of 2014. As a mother of five and grandmother of eleven, her passing greatly impacted her family. Mary Kay dedicated her life to her family and her career as a children’s physical therapist. Dr. Brooks wished to leave a legacy in her name that would help keep her spirit alive; which led him to The Cancer Support Center. After discussing multiple options, Dr. Brooks found it fitting to dedicate the children’s and family space in Mary Kay’s honor. Her mission to help children in need find the highest quality of life will live on in the children’s place. “I am thankful to Sue Armato and Kathleen Simpson for helping me honor Mary Kay,” said Dr. John Brooks. “As a doctor of oncology, I never knew what kind of support The Cancer Support Center gave to those living with cancer. Now that I have lived through a cancer experience I am truly grateful to have a place that provides support in the community.” Mary Kay’s grandchildren playing in the Children’s Place. Currently, Dr. Brooks attends bereavement counseling. He continues to thrive as a result of the sessions and is happy to help a place that makes a difference in many lives. Next time you are in our Homewood location please feel free to ask to see the updated, interactive, Mary Kay Brook’s Children’s Place. Welcome Clinical Director, Dr. Jenna Kiel Dr. Jenna Kiel, Clinical Director 14 The Cancer Support Center welcomes Clinical Director, Dr. Jenna Kiel. Jenna received her doctorate from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. While pursuing her doctoral degree, Jenna interned at The Center where she instantly fit the culture and understood the importance of the mission. “Unfortunately, in our culture, receiving metal health services is a privilege,” said Jenna. “What is so important about our work is that we offer our services to everyone. I also appreciate that we not only focus on treating what is wrong, but that we help people improve what is right.” Jenna first took interest in psychology while working as a social worker after completing her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado. She worked with children within the DCFS-system in Chicago who had experienced abuse, neglect, and had difficulty maintaining foster placements. As a social worker, she worked with therapists who taught her the value of bringing stability into the children’s lives and reinforced the importance of mental health. The experience inspired her to pursue a career in the mental health field. The Center looks forward to the knowledge and talent Jenna will bring to the program team. Please feel free to introduce yourself to Jenna the next time you are at The Center. iGrind Bowling LLC- Survivor bowling ball FCC Pink Ribbon Invitational- FCC Pink Ribbon Invitational Midlothian Country Club- Midlothian Rally for the Cure Posen Fire Department- Pancake Breakfast Oak Forest Park District Flag Football- OF Flag Football PINK Out Village of Mokena- Mokena Mayor’s Charity Golf Outing Mokena Elementary School- Volley for a Cure Flossmoor Baseball- Strike Out Cancer Flossmoor Country Club- FCC Pink Ribbon Invitational Mokena Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing Olympia Fields Country Club- Breast Cancer Awareness Golf Outing Lincoln Way Hockey Club- Lincoln Way Hockey Stick it to Cancer Carl Sandburg High School- Coins for Cancer Hickory Creek Middle School- Pink Volleyball Game Brain Tumor Group Vendor Open House Pedal for Prostate Lincoln Way North High School- Kick Ball Tournament Faith United Methodist Church- Eve Circle’s “Ladies Tea” Oak Forest Park District Sparklers Cheer Squad Mokena Jr. High- Friends of Rachel FOR Club Lincoln Way Gators- Spring for a Cure Zumba-thon Jean Marie Salon & Spa- Pink with Purpose Finley Junior High - “Pink Out Day” & Basketball game SW Laser & MedSpa- Ladies Night Out Marian Catholic High School- Mustache Movember & Breast Cancer Whole Foods Market- Mustache Movember Hickory Creek Middle School- Pink Out Basketball Headlines Salon- Wig out Cancer Chicagoland USBC Board- Bowl to fight prostate cancer ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
