Spring 2015 - The Cancer Support Center

MARCH I APRIL I MAY I JUNE
2015
Because you’re living with cancer, we’re here for you.
The Cancer Support Center is here to give strength, guidance and support to anyone living with a cancer diagnosis,
as well as their loved ones. We do this as a community-based, volunteer-driven, donor-supported organization.
Our programs, resources and services are always delivered by professional therapists, counselors, nutritionists,
and experts; and, are provided in a warm, welcoming and nurturing setting at no cost to participants.
To Be or Not To Be . . . That Is The Question
When living with cancer, the physical and emotional pain may be difficult and the fear triggered by the uncertainties of
the cancer diagnosis can be debilitating. At The Center, we are here to provide support and guidance to help reduce the pain
and control the fear. We are here to work with our participants ‘To Be”. Developing strategies to cope and discover that inner
strength to be present in the moment is the key to our work, each and every day.
In 2015, we chose “To Be” strong, happy, peaceful, present, and more. Join us throughout the year to learn how
“To Be” and live a more positive meaningful life, even with cancer. We look forward to seeing you!
...............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
The Cancer Support Center names 2015, the year…To Be! We invite everyone in our community to create space in their daily
life to live in the moment. At The Center we recognize that life can be filled with worry, uncertainty, and fear. However, we
have a choice to release life’s negativity and live in the moment, to BE. The Center offers many programs to help participants
live in the moment. Here are a few ideas to get started:
To be. . . Relaxed
Put down the to-do list and breathe. Spend time each day practicing mindfulness meditation. Notice your thoughts and
breathe, and allow them to pass through your mind like water heading down a stream. Acknowledge each thought and feeling
passively and then let them float away. Focusing on your breath and freeyourself from every-day stressors.
Below are programs designed to promote relaxation, please see refer to calendar for more information:
Guided Imagery • Open Studio • Art Therapy
To be. . . Active
Stretching increases blood flow, rejuvenating your body. It also improves balance
and stability. We offer gentle yoga every week at both Centers and have exciting new
programming focused on movement and flexibility.
Below are programs designed to promote physical activity, please see refer to calendar for
more information:
Fitness & Wellness • Moves That Matter • Gentle Yoga

a 26 year brain tumor survivor and his wife Chris. Many of the members who attended the first meeting are
still active in the group today! Brain cancer is unique, in that it affects every aspect of daily life. The support
group addresses needs of both survivors with brain cancer as well as their caregivers. The group usually
separates each month into separate caregiver and survivor groups. May is brain tumor awareness month, and
the group supports The Cancer Support Center every year by participating in the walk during May. The team
is called “Kiss My Astrocytoma,” the most common form of brain cancer, and has been the largest fundraising
group for several years. Watch for them in their neon green shirts at the walk this May! Below are pictures of

are nourishing and are essential to good health and other
foods actually deplete our system of important vitamins
and minerals. When we eat too many processed or
refined foods, we feel guilty and upset for making these
choices. Wouldn’t it be exciting to create a habit of
eating nourishing foods 80% of the time and still enjoy
all the foods you love in moderation?

this cycle by learning to replace fat, sugar and salt with
foods that do not trigger the brain/body in a negative
way. You will love the way you feel!

The Mary Kay Brook’s
Children’s Place
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2011, Mary Kay Brooks
sought out The Cancer Support Center for support. As a member of the survivors
group, Mary Kay found comfort and clarity in talking to others who were going
through similar experiences. Her husband, Dr. John Brooks, said, “She looked forward
to the group meetings; they made her happy.”
Mary Kay Brooks holding her
granddaughter.
Sadly, Mary Kay passed in May of 2014. As a mother of five and grandmother
of eleven, her passing greatly impacted her family. Mary Kay dedicated her life to
her family and her career as a children’s physical therapist. Dr. Brooks wished to
leave a legacy in her name that would help keep her spirit alive; which led him to The
Cancer Support Center. After discussing multiple options, Dr. Brooks found it fitting
to dedicate the children’s and family space in Mary Kay’s honor. Her mission to help
children in need find the highest quality of life will live on in the children’s place.
“I am thankful to Sue Armato and Kathleen Simpson for helping me honor
Mary Kay,” said Dr. John Brooks. “As a doctor of oncology, I never knew what
kind of support The Cancer Support Center gave to those living with cancer. Now
that I have lived through a cancer experience I am truly grateful to have a place that
provides support in the community.”

Children’s Place.
Currently, Dr. Brooks attends bereavement counseling. He continues to thrive
as a result of the sessions and is happy to help a place that makes a difference in many
lives. Next time you are in our Homewood location please feel free to ask to see the
updated, interactive, Mary Kay Brook’s Children’s Place.

Welcome Clinical Director, Dr. Jenna Kiel
Dr. Jenna Kiel, Clinical Director
14
The Cancer Support Center welcomes Clinical Director, Dr. Jenna Kiel. Jenna received
her doctorate from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in Chicago. While pursuing
her doctoral degree, Jenna interned at The Center where she instantly fit the culture and
understood the importance of the mission.
“Unfortunately, in our culture, receiving metal health services is a privilege,” said
Jenna. “What is so important about our work is that we offer our services to everyone. I also
appreciate that we not only focus on treating what is wrong, but that we help people improve
what is right.”
Jenna first took interest in psychology while working as a social worker after completing
her bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado. She worked with children within the
DCFS-system in Chicago who had experienced abuse, neglect, and had difficulty maintaining
foster placements. As a social worker, she worked with therapists who taught her the value of
bringing stability into the children’s lives and reinforced the importance of mental health. The
experience inspired her to pursue a career in the mental health field. The Center looks forward
to the knowledge and talent Jenna will bring to the program team. Please feel free to introduce
yourself to Jenna the next time you are at The Center.
