FREE PATTERN Design S8278 • Ladies’ Poncho with Cables One Size Materials: Schachenmayr original Aventica, 500g #00105 barley mix. Two US 10-10½ [6-7mm] circular needles 32“ [80cm] long and one US 8-10 [5-6mm] circular needle 24“ [60cm] long, or size to obtain gauge. All measurements are in centimetres (cm). For approximate inch sizes simply multiply by 0.4 (or divide by 2.54). Rib pattern: alt K2, P2. Stockinette stitch: K RS rows; P WS rows; in rnds K all sts. Cable pattern: work across 40 sts foll Chart; start with 4 sts as given in Method. Only RS rows or odd rounds are given; in WS rows or even rounds work sts as they appear. Work rows 1 to 22 once, then rep rows 23 to 46 throughout for patt. Gauge: with 6-7mm needles and st-st 16 sts and 24 rows/rnds, each to 4“ [10cm]. The 40 sts cable patt = 6¾“ [17cm] wide. METHOD With 6-7mm circular needles work first the lower triangles in rows, then cont to end for poncho in one piece as foll: owing to the large no of sts work first with two circular needles, and change to just one circular needle as required. Front triangle: cast on 4 sts and K 1 WS row, then cont with Cable Patt foll Chart. At the same time cast on at each end, or at the end of every row *3 sts once and 4 sts once, rep these 4 rows 12 times from *. Take the first 18 incs into Cable Patt, and work rem in st-st. When work measures about 8¾“ [22cm], after last inc row, leave the 186 sts on a holder. Back triangle: cast on 4 sts and P 1 WS row, then cont with st-st. At the same time cast on at each end as for front Triangle, working across all sts with st-st = 186 sts. Poncho: cont across the 372 sts of both triangles in rnds, and for side shaping dec 4 sts on 2nd rnd as foll: from rnd change work *K1, skp (= sl1k, K1, psso), 180 in patt, K2tog, K1, rep once from * = 368 sts. Work **2 rnds with decs, 1 rnd without decs and 1 rnd with decs, then rep these 4 rnds throughout from ** (reducing the 180 sts). When work measures about 20½“ [52cm], 72 rnds from end of Triangles, or after a 28th rnd of Cable Patt (156 sts rem on the needle), bind off 16 sts at center of Cable Patt of front for neck, and cont in rows. At the same time bind off at each neck edge on every 2nd row 4 sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts 2 times and 1 st 3 times; at the same time work decs for side shaping as before (= in WS rows for yo work P2tog tbl or P2 tog for K2tog). When work measures about 23“ [58cm] bind off 18 sts at center back for neck and finish each side sep. At neck edge bind off 10 sts once on 2nd foll row. When work measures about 24“ [60cm] bind off rem 9 sts each. Edging: for one half pick up with the 6-7mm circular needle about 180 sts across cast-on edge, starting at center of one Triangle, and ending at center of 2nd Triangle. At the same time inc for front shaping at each end of every row, M1p tbl or M1k tbl in patt beside the selvage st. After 20 rows Rib Patt bind off all 212 sts. Work 2nd half of edging alike. Finishing: block piece to measurements, cover with a damp cloth and allow to dry. Close vertical seams of each half of edging. For roll neck pick up with the short 5-6mm circular needle about 124 sts, P 1 rnd and K 1 rnd, then cont for 10¼“ [26cm] Rib Patt. Bind off all sts loosely.
