long and one US 8-10 [5-6mm] circular needle 24“
[60cm] long, or size to obtain gauge.
All measurements are in centimetres (cm).
For approximate inch sizes simply multiply by 0.4 (or
divide by 2.54).
Rib pattern: alt K2, P2.
Stockinette stitch: K RS rows; P WS rows; in rnds K all
sts.
Cable pattern: work across 40 sts foll Chart; start with 4
sts as given in Method.
Only RS rows or odd rounds are given; in WS rows or
even rounds work sts as they appear.
Work rows 1 to 22 once, then rep rows 23 to 46
throughout for patt.
Gauge: with 6-7mm needles and st-st 16 sts and 24
rows/rnds, each to 4“ [10cm].
The 40 sts cable patt = 6¾“ [17cm] wide.
METHOD
With 6-7mm circular needles work first the lower
triangles in rows, then cont to end for poncho in one
piece as foll: owing to the large no of sts work first with
two circular needles, and change to just one circular
needle as required.
Front triangle: cast on 4 sts and K 1 WS row, then cont
with Cable Patt foll Chart.
At the same time cast on at each end, or at the end of
every row *3 sts once and 4 sts once, rep these 4 rows
12 times from *. Take the first 18 incs into Cable Patt,
and work rem in st-st.
When work measures about 8¾“ [22cm], after last inc
row, leave the 186 sts on a holder.
Back triangle: cast on 4 sts and P 1 WS row, then cont
with st-st. At the same time cast on at each end as for
front Triangle, working across all sts with st-st = 186
sts.
Poncho: cont across the 372 sts of both triangles in
rnds, and for side shaping dec 4 sts on 2nd rnd as foll:
from rnd change work *K1, skp (= sl1k, K1, psso), 180 in
patt, K2tog, K1, rep once from * = 368 sts.
Work **2 rnds with decs, 1 rnd without decs and 1 rnd
with decs, then rep these 4 rnds throughout from **
(reducing the 180 sts).
When work measures about 20½“ [52cm], 72 rnds from
end of Triangles, or after a 28th rnd of Cable Patt (156
sts rem on the needle), bind off 16 sts at center of Cable
Patt of front for neck, and cont in rows.
At the same time bind off at each neck edge on every
2nd row 4 sts once, 3 sts once, 2 sts 2 times and 1 st 3
times; at the same time work decs for side shaping as
before (= in WS rows for yo work P2tog tbl or P2 tog for
K2tog). When work measures about 23“ [58cm] bind off
18 sts at center back for neck and finish each side sep.
At neck edge bind off 10 sts once on 2nd foll row.
When work measures about 24“ [60cm] bind off rem 9
sts each.
Edging: for one half pick up with the 6-7mm circular

Rib Patt; start 1st WS row with selvage st, P2, and end
