UCHealth has long been committed to pushing the boundaries of medicine
by employing a patient-centered, team-based, trained and passionate staff.
As part of our commitment to increasing access and improving the health
of populations we serve we are creating a predictable, Awesome Patient
Experience or “APEX.” APEX blends a patient-centered focus with a teambased approach allowing everyone to work at the top of their scopes and
aligns with the principles of a medical home model. APEX aims to increase
patient, provider and staff satisfaction while improving access.
This revolutionary initiative puts the Medical Assistant at the center of patient
care and the benefits of the team based approach are abundant. Every single
person involved with the patient is operating at the top of their license, work
is accomplished efficiently, you spend more time with the patient, and all
teams work toward the common goal of an improved patient experience.
Since these new cross-trained teams will experience higher MA-to-provider
ratios, all MAs will receive many hours of advanced training to include online
training modules, scheduling instruction as well as training using the upgraded
Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR) system. Jean Kutner, MD, MSPH, Chief
Medical Officer for UCH and a practicing internist, said the new approach is
part of a broad effort by UCHealth to make health care “proactive rather than
reactive. We’re transforming the way we deliver care.” “APEX is part of an
overall strategy to position UCHealth as a true leader.”

Increased
Patient
Interaction
I like being in the room with the doctor. I really like
being able to build better relationships with my
patients as we get to spend so much more time
with them.

I like this new model a lot. It feels as though the
MA’s are able to be a part of the patients care more
than ever. I feel that I have more of an impact on
patient care and able to help get patients more of
the care they need.

From a MA perspective, this new integrated
system allows us to work at the highest level of
role optimization; it is beneficial for both the patient
and the medical assistants. It has opened up a lot
of opportunities for me.
