Welcome to Carers’ News
Dear All
Our 20th anniversary year was very busy for us all here at Carers Support, with additional
activities we organised for you all. We were very fortunate to raise funds from the Charity
Ball, to financially support the activities. In the middle pages of this edition you will see
many photos of some of the carers and staff who joined in with some of the events. It was
great pleasure for me to meet many carers last year; whilst attending our celebrations.
Unpaid Carers carry out a caring role for many reasons but mostly through love and
respect. Caring can impact on the ability to work, meet others, attend health appointments and have time to
yourself. Carers are incredibly resilient and resourceful people – at any age. They rarely complain or ask for
help. Our role is to help you by providing someone who will listen without judgement, providing opportunities
for respite breaks and socialisation, providing opportunities for your own personal development and providing
guidance if asked. For the first time, Carers will be recognised in the law in the same way as those they care for
due to the Care Act which is being introduced in April this year. Further information about the Care Act is
included within this magazine.
There are many events organised for you to attend in the coming months; an exciting new Mindfulness course
and some craft sessions to consider. We can offer support with transport and respite to enable you to attend.
Wishing you all a belated Happy New Year!

Who is a Carer?
A carer is someone of any age who, without payment, provides support to family or friends
who could not manage without this help. This could be caring for a relative, partner or friend
who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems.
Anyone can become a carer; carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any
age. Many feel they are doing what anyone else would in the same situation; looking after their
husband, mother, son, or best friend and just getting on with it.
Carers’ own health and mental wellbeing can be affected by their caring role. Carers may live
with the person they care for or they may be caring at a distance and they may care for more
than one person.
Monthly Meet & Talk Groups
People come to our Meet and Talk groups to have a chat and share common concerns. They draw
on their own experiences to offer emotional and practical support to help each other move forward.
Group support encompasses a personal understanding of frustrations experienced, encourage
emotional sharing, reframe situations, make sense of what has happened or is happening and
confidently move on in a purposeful and positive direction.
It is through this trusting relationship, which offers companionship, empathy and empowerment, that
feelings of isolation and rejection can be replaced with hope, a sense and belief in personal control.
Here is what carers who attend support groups say:

“I wanted to be able to show people that however

Life After Caring
Rebuilding your life after caring
The ending of your caring role may take some
time to adjust to. Having more time to yourself
may give you the opportunity for a much
needed rest, but it can also leave you with a lot
of time to fill.
The course is free and the day out is
subsidised.
If you are used to always having things to do, it
can be hard to stop and think about what you
would like to do, and to be able to make
choices for yourself. Some people find that
once they are no longer caring, exhaustion –
both physical and emotional – catches up with
them and they may even feel unwell for a
while.
‘I wasn’t sure about attending this course to
start with as I was a bit nervous about sharing
my thoughts and feelings with other carers that
I don’t know. I shouldn’t have worried at all; we
were all made so welcome and sharing was
much easier than I thought.’
Carers who attended the course in October
said:
‘It was so nice to be able to talk about things
openly and I came away with new ideas that I
had never thought about’.
Having spent time caring for someone else and
putting their needs first, it is really important to
look after yourself and let other people look
after you.
‘We talked about some very interesting areas
that were important to all of us and I found it
good to meet with other carers in a similar
situation to me’.
When caring ends, some practical matters will
have to be dealt with fairly quickly, for example,
benefits and housing, but you do not need to
rush into making decisions about what you do
next straight away. It was in response to this
that Carers’ Support have put together a
programme called Life After Caring
‘I was so grateful to be able to visit the Marlowe
Theatre with the group as a special treat, what
a great evening! Thank you so much’.
Call the office on 01233 664393 to register
your interest or for more information ask for
Teresa or Keeley.
The new Life After Caring programme consists
of three sessions, once a week, followed by a
social Meet & Talk group and a day out
together.
Kent Savers Credit Union was set up in 2010 to provide
affordable financial services to the people of Kent. It is a financial co-operative,
owned and controlled by their members and runs on a not-for-profit basis.
Their main aims are to promote saving and provide their members with loans at reasonable rates, so
that they feel in control of their own money.
They consider themselves a safer and cheaper alternative to other money lending sources, including
payday loans, doorstep lenders and loan sharks, and more accessible than high street banks, who can
make it difficult for people with a poor credit history to borrow money.
Every credit union must have a common bond. Theirs is that they are here for everyone living and/or
working in Kent. They aim to help revive the local economy by keeping money in the community – after
all, loans to members can mean income for local shops and businesses. You must live or work within
the county of Kent - i.e. the area currently administered by Kent County Council, Medway Unitary
Authority or The London Borough of Bexley.
Kent Savers can be contacted on 0333-321-9050 or see their website www.kentsavers.co.uk

Rebuilding your life after caring
The
Care Act
From April 2015, care and support
in England is changing for the
better. If you support someone
as a Carer, you could benefit from
the changes.
The new Care Act will help to
make care and support more
consistent across the country. ‘Care and support’ is the term we use to describe the help some
adults need to live as well as possible with any illness or disability they may have. It can include
help with things like washing, dressing, eating, getting out and about and keeping in touch with
friends or family.
Supporting you in caring
In England, millions of us provide unpaid care or support to an adult family member or friend, either in
our own homes or somewhere else. ‘Caring’ for someone covers lots of different things, like helping with
their washing, dressing or eating, taking them to regular appointments or keeping them company when
they feel lonely or anxious. If this sounds like you, from April 2015, changes to the way care and support is
provided in England mean you may be able to get more help so that you can carry on caring and look after
your own wellbeing.
The right help at the right time
You may be eligible for support from your local authority, such as a direct payment* to spend on the
things that make caring easier. It may be that you would also benefit by receiving practical support such
as arrangements for someone else to step in when you need a short break.
We can help you find the right support and access a Carer’s assessment if you would like one. Please
contact us if you would like more information about the support available or would like a Carer’s
Assessment.
Assessing your wellbeing
A Carer’s assessment will look at the different ways that caring affects your life and work out how you can
carry on doing the things that are important to you and your family. Your physical, mental and emotional
wellbeing will be at the heart of this assessment. As a result of the assessment, you may be eligible for
support.
In many cases in Kent Carers’ Support organisations are able to carry out Carer’s Assessments on behalf of
KCC. We will also offer you advice and guidance to help you with your caring responsibilities and help you
look after your own wellbeing. You can have a Carer’s assessment even if the person you care for does not
get any help from the council, and they will not need to be assessed.
*A direct payment means that the money the council contributes towards meeting your care and support
needs is paid directly to you, for example into your bank account or the bank account of someone else you
choose, to give you control over how it is spent.

The NHS Minor Ailments Service
If you or your children don't pay for prescriptions you can use the NHS Minor Ailments service to get advice
and medicines free of charge. The NHS Minor Ailments service is available at pharmacies in Scotland,
Northern Ireland and selected stores in England and Wales so check locally with your Boots pharmacist for
availability.
What is the NHS Minor Ailments Service?
If you don't pay for prescriptions you may be
able to receive advice and be given a medicine for a range of minor ailments, free of charge, on the NHS,
without having to visit your doctor first. Minor ailments could include coughs, colds, headaches, hay fever,
insect bites and stings, eczema, earache and diarrhoea.
Which ailments are commonly treated?
We recommend that you speak to your Boots
pharmacist who can advise you whether or not the Minor Ailments service could be suitable for you and
members of your family.
Because this is an NHS service which is only available in selected Boots stores, not every store will be
able to treat the same list of minor ailments. However examples of ailments which are commonly treated
include: Colds; Conjunctivitis; Constipation; Coughs; Diarrhoea; Earache; Hayfever; Head lice; Headache
and fever; Heartburn and indigestion; Insect bites and stings; Mild eczema and dermatitis; Mouth ulcers;

Feedback from carers ……..
“I have found Carers’ Support staffed with caring, intelligent and professional people who work to help Carers’ like me live
another day. I cannot thank them enough for their help and support and I would recommend anyone who has found
themselves in the shoes of a Carer, to contact them, they will find the time well spent”.
'Thank you for caring. Knowing that carers support is there for when I need it is so important. You're really valuable. You
might not realise it, but you are, you're really valuable'.
Mr M said how helpful he found Caring with Confidence - he said it was “really informative”.
