In the 6th, Simpson and Thompson turned a double play to
keep the Bruins from scoring, and CAL’s bats came alive
with hits by Cassidy Cook and Jessica Powell, a 2-run triple by Caroline LeFan, and an RBI-single for Thompson, scoring 3 runs and putting CAL up 3-2. In the 7th, Ballard managed to tie it up on 2 hits,
sending the game to extra innings. In the 8th, Ballard scored 2 runs,
and the Centurions matched them with an RBI-triple by Powell and
another RBI-single for Thompson. In the 9th, LeFan took over pitching, and Ballard scored 1 run. This time CAL was unable to answer, losing the heartbreaker. Final score
Ballard 6 – CAL 5 (9 innings).
Tuesday CAL traveled to Eastern for another district matchup.
LeFan was in the circle for CAL. Eastern scored in the 1st inning on an error and a hit. The Centurions put 3 runs on the
board in the 3rd inning after Ratterman and Cook singled, and
Powell hit the first home run of the season for CAL. Singles by
Thompson, Simpson, and Elizabeth Ashley, and doubles by
Thompson and Ratterman were all left stranded the next few
innings. The Eagles scored 5 runs in the 4th & 5th innings on 7
hits, bringing the score to 6-3 after 6 innings. CAL scored 1 run
th
in the 7 on singles by Powell, LeFan, and Brittany Mumford, but it wasn’t enough. Final score CAL 4 –
Eastern 6.
CAL faced Sacred Heart at home on Thursday. Ratterman
started pitching for the Centurions, and was soon replaced by
LeFan after struggling to find the strike zone, giving up 3
walks and 2 hits. Cook made a double play, but SHA scored
4 runs in the 1st. Ratterman led off the game with a triple for
CAL, scoring on a sac bunt by Cook, making the score 4-1.

short. Final score Sacred Heart 6 – CAL 2. The Centurions would love to see you at their games this week:
Monday at home v. #9 Mercy, Tuesday at home v. Shelby Co., and Thursday at Collins.

Two school records were broken this past week and one equaled, as the track team
began the march toward the post-season.
The week started by hosting the South Oldham Dragons. The girls team remained undefeated
in dual meet competition, coming out on top 47-39. The boys had some good individual performances, but were short-handed and fell 58-39. The big scoring events for the Lady Centurions were the throws and the 400. Jessica Bozell led teammates Alexis Roberts and Kenzie
Stovall, to sweep the 400. Senior Lilli Popovich reminded all why she was signed by the University of Louisville, taking both the discus and shot put. The younger throwers are learning by her example and performed well
on Tuesday. Lynley Clay and Heather Glidewell placed 2nd & 3rd respectively in the discus, both throwing over 80' for the first time. Isabella Griffee got a PR in the shot, to finish
runner-up. Also notching victories for the girls, were Morgan McIntire in the 1600, Maya
Wright in the 200 and Kenzie Stovall in the high jump. The boys team was led by the field
eventers, as the Centurions came out on top in both throws and the high jump. Joel Shelton
picked up PR's in both the shot (42' 9") and discus (101' 8") to win both events. Bill Jessee
and Cameron Becht provided good support, placing 2nd & 3rd in the shot. First year competitor, senior Matthew Wine, showed that he is quickly learning the sport. Matthew won
the high jump in a school record equaling 5' 8" jump.
Thursday the teams traveled to Buckner for the 16-team Sundown Invitational. As with
Tuesday, the team was short-handed, but there were some outstanding individual performances by the Christian Academy athletes. As has come to be expected, Lilli Popovich continued to excel in the throws. Matching arms with Regional foe Maggie
Mollak of North Oldham. The two have not only been battling for 2 years for the supremacy of Region 3, but of Class 2A and the entire Commonwealth of Kentucky. Currently Maggie has the longest shot throw and Lilli the longest discus throw
in the state. Lilli finished runner-up to Maggie in the shot, but the discus provided the
biggest excitement, with a stirring battle. With Lilli leading the competition, Maggie
threw her farthest throw ever - 129' 11" - over
a foot better than Lilli's PR. But Lilli was not
to be denied, stepping into the ring, she added 3' to her PR to seize the win with her 131'
8" throw. Senior Hannah Herd began the week by signing with the University of Louisville, to continue to be teammates with Lilli. She had a late start to competition this season, having to deal with a stress reaction
just after her outstanding cross country season. Hannah only returned to track racing
on Monday April 20th. But she showed all
that she is back! Hannah ran down Assumption's Sydney Larkin, to lower the
school record in the 1 mile run to 5:24.25. Then she came back later in the evening to
drop her PR in the 3200 by nearly 30 seconds, with her time of 11:36.00. Hannah's
XC teammates started out the meet with a big win in the 4x800 relay. Callie Donaldson, Clara Lynch, Morgan McIntire and Madalyn O'Dea carried the baton for the 8
laps in a season's best 10:26.98.

Assumption 7 CAL 6 (OT)
The Centurions opened up the Brave-Heart Tournament against Assumption and quickly established itself defensively by holding The Rockets scoreless for the first nine minutes of the game. Each team
eventually exchanged scores and went to halftime tied at 4-4.
The Centurions finally put together back-to-back goals and went ahead 6-4 with what appeared to be game
winning momentum and only 2 minutes left in the game. However, the Rockets tied the score with 10 seconds remaining in the game and eventually winning in overtime 7-6. Caroline Anderson led the scoring with
4 goals followed by Ashley Semak and Nina Dobbs with one apiece.
CAL 8 Mercy 6
The second game of the Brave-Heart tourney saw the Centurions facing Mercy (a team they had beaten earlier in the season). Following a difficult overtime loss to Assumption the day before, CAL opened up the scoring against the Jaguars with a quick goal within the first 20 seconds of the game by Caroline Anderson and
never relinquished the lead.
CAL's lower class-men showed up big as Sloan Reding led all scorers with 3 goals while Kaitlyn Semak (8th
Grade) also added a goal and one assist. The scoring was rounded off by Allison Edlin (1 goal) and Nina
Dobbs (1 goal & Assist).
Manual 9 CAL 8
The centurions finished the Brave-Heart tourney with a game against Manual. This game was not much different than the first two games of the tournament as both teams played it tight right down to the wire.
Both teams exchanged scores while Allison Edlin held the Centurions within striking distance by controlling
the draw throughout the game. Edlin also led the team along with Nina Dobbs in points with 3 apiece, while
Ashley Semak had 2 goals and Caroline Anderson 1. But in the end, the Crimsons were able to edge CAL 98.
KCD 18 CAL 4
CAL quickly surprised the two-time State runner-up Bearcats by jumping out to a 2-0 lead, as Caroline Anderson and Allison Edlin but scored on quick drives to the goal. However, it would soon disappear as KCD
settled down with their pressure defense to take the lead.

CAL VARSITY BASEBALL OFFENSE COMES ALIVE!!
In a season where runs had proven to be scarce, the Centurion baseball
offense came alive this past week, scoring 39 runs in four games, and
matched with a Riley Thompson 16 strike out performance on Thursday, CAL won three of four games during the week.
The week opened with an offensive explosion as CAL hit three home
runs in a game, but lost to Elizabethtown, 16-13, in Elizabethtown.
CAL struck early, when Johnny Embry opened the game by tripling to
right field and scoring on Garret McIntire’s single to centerfield. CAL scored their second run in the second inning as
Johnny Embry clubbed his fifth home run of the year over the centerfield fence.
CAL scored twice more in the third when Jake Hollinsworth unloaded for his first home run of the year. Paul Haupt
led off with a single to right field and advanced to second base on Luke Price’s sacrifice bunt. One out later, Hollinsworth homered off the scoreboard in left field, giving CAL a 4-0 lead over the highly regarded Elizabethtown team (17
-3 entering the game). Elizabethtown scored twice in the bottom half of the frame to narrow the lead to 4-2.
CAL’s lead grew to 8-2 in the top of the fourth. Blake Carlisle was hit by a pitch to open the inning, but was forced
out at a second on Johnny Embry’s ground ball. Embry stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Garret
McIntire walked and Embry scored on Brett Cohoon’s infield single with McIntire advancing to second base. Paul
Haupt doubled off the top of the centerfield fence to score McIntire with Cohoon advancing to third. Cohoon scored
and Haupt moved to third base on Luke Price’s ground ball. Haupt then scored on Dylan Sexton’s single to finalize
CAL’s fourth inning scoring.
However, Elizabethtown scored eight times in the bottom of the fourth on only three hits, taking advantage of five
Centurion walks and an error to take what proved to be an insurmountable 10-8 lead.
CAL scored one in the fifth inning when Blake Carlisle singled with one out and moved to second base when Johnny
Embry walked. One out later, Brett Cohoon singled to right to score Carlisle. Elizabethtown answered with three runs
in both the fifth and sixth innings to take a 16-9 lead.

CAL had one last rally in the seventh inning. Blake Carlisle led off with
a single to centerfield and advanced to third base when Johnny Embry’s
fielder’s choice ground ball was thrown into right field. Garrett McIntire
walked to load the bases. One out later, Paul Haupt slammed a grand
slam home run over the left field fence to narrow the gap to 16-13. Luke
Price followed with a single to centerfield but the rally fell short at that
point.
Paul Haupt had four hits in the game, scoring three runs and driving in
five runs with a grand slam home run, a double, and two singles. Johnny
Embry scored four runs, hitting a home run and tripling. Jake Hollinsworth homered. Dylan Sexton had a double and
a single while Garrett McIntire, Brett Cohoon, and Blake Carlisle all had two singles. Luke Price had a single. CAL
used four pitchers in the game: Micah Brown, James Skaggs, Cameron Marshall, and Jake Hollinsworth.
CAL’s offense did one run better on Tuesday as they defeated district rival KCD, 14-2, at KCD. CAL’s scoring began
with two outs in the second inning. Dylan Sexton walked and stole second base. Sexton scored when Jake Hollinsworth doubled and Hollinsworth scored on an Aaron Blackburn single. Blackburn advanced to third base when Blake
Carlisle reached safely on an error with Carlisle advancing to second base. Both runners moved up, with Hollinsworth
scoring on a KCD balk, giving CAL a 3-0 lead.
KCD scored once in the bottom half of the second before CAL erupted for nine runs in
the third. Garrett McIntire singled to start the inning, moving to second base on Brett Cohoon’s ground ball. Paul Haupt and Luke Price were both hit by pitches to load the bases.
Dylan Sexton walked to score McIntire and Jake Hollinsworth walked to score Haupt.
Price scored on an Aaron Blackburn single before Sexton was forced out at the plate on a
Blake Carlisle fielder’s choice ground ball for the second out. Hollinsworth scored on a
wild pitch and Johnny Embry walked to reload the bases. Garrett McIntire then cleared
the bases with a double to centerfield, giving CAL a 10-1 lead. Brett Cohoon singled to
score McIntire and advanced to second base on a Paul Haupt single. Cohoon stole third
base and scored on a wild pitch to finish the scoring rally. KCD scored once in the bottom of the third inning, CAL now leading, 12-2.
CAL scored once more in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Dylan Sexton singled to lead off the fourth inning. Sexton was balked to second base, moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored when Grant Harmon reached on an error. CAL scored their final run in the fifth when Matt Frank led off the inning with a walk. Frank was balked to second base, moved to third base on a wild pitch, and scored on a Paul Haupt ground ball.
Garrett McIntire had a double and a single for CAL and Aaron Blackburn had two singles. Jake Hollinsworth had a
double and singles were collected by Dylan Sexton, Brett Cohoon, and Paul Haupt. Dylan Sexton went the distance on
the mound for the Centurions, striking out six.
Versus Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP) on Thursday, Riley Thompson struck out 16 PRP batters and CAL took advantage
of seven PRP walks to top PRP, 4-2. It was CAL’s first win over PRP since 2011.
(continued on next page)
7
PRP scored their only two runs in the bottom half of the first inning.
Meanwhile, CAL didn’t get a hit in the game until the fifth inning
when they pushed across their first three runs. Dylan Sexton and Riley Thompson both walked to start the inning. Jake Hollinsworth sacrificed them to third
base. Blake Carlisle was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Johnny Embry
walked to force in Sexton with CAL’s first run. Garrett McIntire singled to left
field to score Thompson and tie the game at 2-2 with the bases still loaded.
Brett Cohoon walked to score Carlisle and CAL had taken a 3-2 lead.
CAL scored an insurance run in the seventh inning when Blake Carlisle and
Johnny Embry singled to open the inning and Garrett McIntire walked to load the bases. Carlisle was forced out at home, but Embry scored on a Paul Haupt sacrifice fly to end the game scoring.
CAL had three singles in the game; one each from Garrett McIntire, Blake Carlisle, and Johnny Embry. Riley Thompson went the
distance on the mound, pitching seven full innings and striking out 16 PRP batters. He struck out at least two batters in every inning of the game. He also pitched out of a sixth inning jam when PRP’s first two hitters reached base, but he retired the final six
batters of the game to seal the win.
In the final game of the week, CAL held off a four-run seventh inning rally to defeat Central Hardin, 86, at Centurion Field.
CAL opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a manufactured run. Johnny Embry singled to left field and stole second base. Garrett McIntire sacrificed him to third base and Embry scored
on a Brett Cohoon ground ball. Central Hardin scored twice in the top of the third inning to take a 2-1
lead.
CAL took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fourth. Brett Cohoon singled to lead off the inning
and advanced to second base on a poor pickoff throw to first base. Cohoon scored when Paul Haupt
doubled to left field. Haupt advanced to third base on a wild pitch while Dylan Sexton drew a walk.
Haupt scored on a Riley Thompson ground ball with Sexton advancing to second base. Jake Hollinsworth singled home Sexton and then scored when Blake Carlisle singled with Hollinsworth scoring on a throwing error, giving
CAL a 5-2 lead.
CAL scored thrice more in the fifth inning. Brett Coohoon singled with one out and stole second base. He advanced to third base
on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Luke Price walked with Nick Weaver entering the game to run. Weaver stole second
base and scored when Dylan Sexton tripled to right field. Sexton scored on a passed ball to give CAL an 8-2 lead. Central Hardin
took advantage of three CAL seventh inning errors to plate four runs, but came up short with CAL winning, 8-6.
Dylan Sexton tripled for CAL and Paul Haupt doubled. Brett Cohoon and Blake Carlisle both had two singles. Garrett McIntire
and Jake Hollinsworth both singled. Aaron Blackburn went the distance for CAL on the mound, striking out seven. That made
for three consecutive complete game pitching performances for CAL to end the week.
CAL’s record now stands at 13-10 entering this week. For this week, CAL plays a district game at home on Tuesday at 5:00 vs.
Eastern High School and they will play a pair of games on Saturday here at CAL. The Centurions are scheduled to play versus
South Oldham at 11:00 and versus Jeffersontown at 4:00. They will also play at St. Xavier the following Monday at 5:00.

HANNAH HERD SIGNS TO RUN CROSS COUNTRY AT LOUISVILLE
Congratulations to senior, Hannah Herd, who signed a letter of intent to
run cross country at the University of Louisville last Monday.
“Hannah has worked extremely hard and overcome some very tough
injuries to put herself in this position. She has just scratched the surface
of her running potential and U of L definitely sees that. U of L wanted
Hannah badly and they got her. As great of a runner that Hannah is, she
is a far better young adult and has been an absolute joy to coach. She
will excel at whatever she puts her mind to,” said assistant CAL cross
country coach, Derrick Dixon.
Hannah made official visits to Bellarmine University, Lipscomb University, Georgetown College and Centre College.
“I chose to attend U of L because I really love the friendship on the
team and the way the coaches take care of the athletes. The FCA program is absolutely incredible, and I'm also really pleased with their academic programs and internships in the areas I'm interested in,” said
Herd.
Assistant cross country coach and CAL high school bible teacher, Brian Dewey, said, “Not only is Louisville getting a
great athlete, but they are also getting an outstanding individual as far as character and personality.”
Hannah’s father, Walter Herd, thanked everyone for their support of Hannah over the years.
“I want to say thank you to three groups of people: a group of coaches who helped develop both of my daughters athletically, spiritually, academically, and socially. The second group is to the students; thank you for being good friends
and good role models. And thirdly, the University of Louisville for giving Hannah the opportunity to take her passion
to the highest level possible,” said Mr. Herd.
Herd has received numerous awards for cross country including: National Guard KHSAA Best and Brightest Award
(2014), Jefferson County 2A Runner of the Year (2011,
2013, & 2014) and Academic All-State First Team (2011,
2013, & 2014). She also played field hockey and soccer
while at CAL, but ended up focusing on cross country and
track.
“Running cross country and track have by far been some of
the best experiences in my years at this school,” said Herd.
Hannah plans to pursue a degree in the field of dentistry or
nursing and looks forward to running for the Cardinals next
year.

The CAL JV baseball team played one game this past week, losing a
hard fought battle to the Elizabethtown High School JV team, 6-5
CAL took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. James Skaggs beat out an
infield hit with one-out to start the rally. Tristan Howes, running for
Skaggs, then advanced to both second and third bases on wild pitches. Howes scored the first run of the

The Elizabethtown JV scored twice in their half of the first to cut the

bottom of the fifth inning to win the game, 6-5.
James Skaggs had two singles for the Centurions. Nick

JV SOFTBALL SPLITS GAMES 1-1 FOR THE WEEK
JV Softball started the week hosting Ballard. Ballard scored early, with 3
runs in the 1st despite a strikeout thrown by pitcher Loren Simpson. The Bruins scored another 6 runs in the 2nd on 2 errors and some hits, and CAL got on
the board in the 3rd with a walk by Ellie Harshfield, a single by Sam Thompson, and a 2-run double by Elizabeth Ashley, making the score 9-2. Ballard
knocked in 2 more runs in the 4th on an error and 3 hits, and another 4 runs in
the 5th, but the Centurions could not get their bats going. Final score Ballard
15 – CAL 2.
Tuesday the Centurions took on Eastern at their place. A lead-off hit by Sarah Ratterman and walks by Simpson and
Hannah Howes were stranded in the 1st. Ratterman started in the circle for CAL, and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits to the
Eagles. In the 2nd, Kayla Chapman reached on error, Ashley walked, and CAL was able to tie up the game 2-2. Simpson pitched the next 4 innings, throwing 6 strikeouts. CAL scored another 2 runs in the 3rd on a single by Simpson, a
double by Howes, sac fly by Ashton Edwards, and singles by Riley Sexton and Ashley. In the 4th, the Centurions
scored 4 more runs, with singles by Simpson, Edwards, Ashley and Catie Kearfott, and a triple for Hannah Howes.
Simpson hit another single in the 5th, but was stranded. Eastern never scored again. Final score CAL 8 – Eastern 2.
The 7/8 boys lacrosse team added 4 more victories this past week while
playing as the visiting team first at North Oldham and then at Noe. It was
another strong performance at both end of the fields with the Middies and
Attacks going on a scoring rampage in Red game action against the Mustangs and Crossfire. First year CAL player but veteran Middie Braden Haffling led all scorers in the two red games with 8 goals followed closely by
Kaden Weiter with 6. Jacob Rayome and Peyton Wheeler had 4 goals each
between the two games. Charlie Higgason had a nice game against the
North Oldham Mustangs with 7 saves while Carter Adams had a nice game
as well in his Red game debut against Noe. Congrats to D-Poles Barrett
Gray, Luke Sunderland, David McKinley and Cameron Taylor as they each
scored their first goal of the season! Hats off to the Centurion defense which held the Crossfire to just 2 shots in the
entire game. Final scores - CAL 15 - Mustangs 3 and CAL 17 - Noe 0.
In Blue game action, it was another ground ball demonstration by veteran defenseman Cameron Taylor (9 GB's) and Middie Jacob Sutherland
(7). Carson Moylan had a nice game against both teams with 6 goals on
7 shots while adding a handful of GB's to the books as well. In the end it
was a total team effort as it has been all season as CAL beat the Mustangs 12 - 5 and Noe 6 - 2.
Great job guys, keep the momentum going as we head into tournament play soon!

WHAT A WEEK IN MIDDLE SCHOOL SOFTBALL!
Tuesday -April 28: (CAL 7-STUART 12) Although the score shows a loss, it doesn’t reflect the excitement this game possessed. The girls rallied toward the end. The fans were on the edges of their seats wondering, if like a Rocky movie, the girls would defy the rough beginning and take the lead. Keep Lily Palmer
in your prayers…she fractured her hand in this game while batting.
Thursday-April 30: (CAL 19- CONWAY 3) Samantha Marshall came out strong with her pitching and
didn’t allow Conway to score in the first inning. When CAL came up to bat, the girls took an impressive
lead and held that lead the entire game.
Next week is the beginning of the JCPS league tournament. The CAL Centurion girls will face off against
Ramsey Tuesday evening at 7:00pm at Beechmont Field. Come out to cheer the girls on!

CAL RED vs Holy Trinity A was a close game. CAL RED had
their first overtime game this season. CAL RED was victorious over
the eagles. CAL RED was led by goals by Brock Ruckriegel, Cash

CAL BLUE vs Holy Tr inity B was an exciting game. CAL BLUE
