PURPOSE OF JOB

To raise the profile of volunteering with local organisations, residents and policy-makers,
increasing the quality, range and appeal of volunteering opportunities available in
Southwark
 To provide strategic support to create, improve and sustain effective citizen led, nonpolitical, participation to increase community cohesion in Southwark
 To provide strategic leadership to support and develop a culture of community and
corporate giving

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
To raise the profile of volunteering with local organisations, residents and
policy-makers, increasing the quality, range and appeal of volunteering
opportunities available in Southwark
1.1
Lead and manage the volunteer services team to facilitate the development of
effective mechanisms and resources for volunteer brokerage, outreach, volunteer
management and the development of good practice in organisations across
Southwark.
1.2
To provide strategic leadership on the development and promotion of a co-ordinated,
mutually beneficial approach to volunteering; in line with Southwark Council’s
Volunteering Strategy.
1.3
To develop strategic partnerships to cultivate programmes to integrate volunteers
and voluntary action into new and emerging structures, for example in health and
social care.
1.4
To lead on and manage the development of approaches to measure the impact and
value of volunteering in Southwark.

1.5
To identify and generate new streams of income that will support volunteers,
volunteer management and the voluntary and community sector more broadly.
2.
To provide strategic support to create, improve and sustain effective citizen
led, non-political, participation to increase community cohesion in Southwark
2.1
To lead and manage the Community Action Network team to help to build
Community Action Networks across Southwark in order to increase the opportunities
for people to become more active in their communities and have a greater voice in
local decision making.
2.2
Lead and manage all aspects of Community Action Southwark’s work with new and
emerging communities in Southwark.
2.3
To oversee the development of a cohort of volunteers, community leaders and other
active citizens to help deliver a borough wide community engagement network.
3.
To provide strategic leadership to support and develop a culture of community
and corporate giving
3.1
To lead and manage the Involve team to deliver an employer supported volunteering
and corporate social responsibility programme (Involve)
3.2
To provide strategic support to local voluntary and community sector organisations,
charitable trusts, residents, the local authority and businesses to create a model of
local giving in Southwark.
3.3
To develop productive relationships with a range of stakeholders to promote
community and corporate giving.
4.
Staff management and operational responsibilities
4.1
To be the key strategic manager responsible for planning, organising and monitoring
all aspects of Community Action Southwark’s volunteering and engagement functions
4.2
Provide line management support, supervision and annual appraisals to the
volunteering and engagement team and ensuring that financial management systems
are robust and adhered to.
4.3
Support the Chief Executive in developing and producing strategic and business
plans, and work with the team to contribute to a strategic and planned work
programme for the volunteering and engagement function.
4.4
Keep up to date with developments affecting your work, and maintain and improve
personal competence through continuous professional development.
4.5
To work within all of Community Action Southwark’s policies and in particular the
Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities and Confidentiality policies, and help to
ensure that diversity and equality of opportunity is integral to the organisation’s work

Work to administration and communication protocols efficiently to ensure that
organisational systems and procedures are implemented.

Additional Information
Office Base: The post is currently based at the Community Action Southwark Offices, 1
Addington Square, Camberwell, London SE5 0HF
Hours of work: 35 per week

Monday to Friday

Flexi-Time
9.00am to 5.00pm
8.00am to 6.30pm
A flexi-time scheme is in operation within Community Action Southwark. The successful
applicant must be willing to work within the flexi-time hours. The person appointed may be
required to work outside these hours.
Annual Leave: 30 days Annual Leave. The leave runs from 1st April to 31 March.
Pension Scheme: In addition to the salary, there is a company pension scheme to which
employees currently contribute 3% of their salaries
Probationary Period: The appointment will commence with a probation period of six
months which may be terminated at a month’s notice by either side during the period.
Other: Successful applicants will need to prove their entitlement to work in the UK and may
be subject to CRB/ISA checks.
