EASTER SUNDAY
Tone
EASTER WEEK.
GOOD FRIDAY – 10th April—6pm
There is no Divine Liturgy on Good Friday for the same reason that forbids the celebration of the Eucharist on the fasting days of Lent.
The service is usually celebrated in the mid-afternoon (3pm) or evening 6pm to commemorate the burial of Jesus. A “tomb” is erected at
the front of the Church and decorated with flowers.
During the service, a special icon which is painted on cloth (plaschanitsia) depicting the dead Saviour is carried by 4 men and with the
whole congregation also walking and praying around the outside of the Church 3 times and then it is placed on the “tomb” in the Church.
At the end of the service, the congregation then goes on their knees to kiss Jesus lying in the tomb.
HOLY SATURDAY – 11th April - 6pm
During this service, the priest removes the Cloth of Jesus (plaschanitsia) to the altar where it will remain for 40 days until the day of
Ascension. The priest and the congregation then proceed to walk around the Church 3 times and returns to the closed doors of the front of
the Church. Here the Resurrection of Christ is announced and people sing “Christ is Risen” several times. The people re-enter the Church
and the service of Easter Matins continues. The “tomb” has been taken away and flowers decorate the church to celebrate Christ’s
Resurrection. The vestments are bright and the people sing “Christ has risen; indeed He is Risen!
After the service, the priest blesses the Easter baskets to those who have brought them. The rest will be blessed on Easter Sunday after
the Divine Liturgy.

Epistle Act 1:1-8 Acts 1:1-8 1:1 The first book I wrote, Theophilus, concerned all that Jesus began both to do
and to teach, 1:2 until the day in which he was received up, after he had given commandment through the Holy
Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 1:3 To these he also showed himself alive after he suffered, by many
proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days, and speaking about God's Kingdom. 1:4 Being assembled
together with them, he commanded them, "Don't depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father,
which you heard from me. 1:5 For John indeed baptized in water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not
many days from now." 1:6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, "Lord, are you now restoring
the kingdom to Israel?"
1:7 He said to them, "It isn't for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within his own authority. 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, in
all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth."

Gospel John1:1:17 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2
He was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things came into being through him and without him not one thing came
into being. 1:4 What has come into being in him was life and the life was the light of all
people.. 1:5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. 1:6
There came a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 1:7 He came as a witness, to
testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. 1:8 He himself was not the
light, but he came to testify to the light. 1:9 The true light that enlightens everyone was
coming into the world.
1:10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did
not know him. 1:11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept
him. 1:12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to
become children of God. 1:13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, or
of the will of man, but of God. 1:14 And the Word became flesh, and lived among us
and we have seen his glory, the glory as a father’s only Son, , full of grace and truth.
1:15 John testified to him. John testified to him and cried out, "This was he of whom I
said, 'He who comes after me ranks ahead of me, because he was before me.'" 1:16 From
his fullness we have all received grace upon grace. 1:17 The law indeed was given through Moses. Grace and truth
came through Jesus Christ.

Blessing of the Baskets - Sviachenia
Wicker baskets of food are taken to church on Holy Saturday or Pascha morning and are blessed after the Liturgy.
A beeswax candle goes into the basket and is lit during the blessing.
The Candle symbolizes Jesus, the Light of the World, and is lit during the blessing by the priest.
Cheese reminds Christians of moderation.
Red Eggs are hard-boiled and remind us of the Passion. Along with decorated eggs, they indicate hope, new life
and Christ rising from His tomb.
Meats are symbolic of great joy and abundance in celebration of Christ's Resurrection. The Sausage links are
symbolic of the chains of death that were broken when Jesus rose from the dead as well as of God's generosity.
Horseradish and Beetroot are reminders of the
bitterness and harshness of the Passion of Jesus and the
vinegar mixed in symbolizes the sour wine given to
Jesus on the cross.
Salt represents adding zest to life and preserves from
corruption.
Sweets suggest the promise of eternal life or good
things to come.
A linen cover usually embroidered with a picture of
the Risen Christ or symbol with the words "Christ is
Risen" is placed over the foods when brought to the
church.

Ukrainian Traditions, Rituals and Ceremonies
Posted by: Ivan Mysiv in Bishop Peter's Articles March 17, 2015
Ukrainian culture is very old, distinct, and varied. Our customs and traditions have very ancient
roots, some of them are many thousands of years old, others may be only a thousand, some can
be recent. Ukraine throughout its’ history has had different occupations, rulers, and influences.
They all have left their influences on the daily lives of people. Ukraine basically has been
Christian for about a thousand years. Before that, many pagan customs were well entrenched in
the population. It is also very big country with all kinds of regions, mountains, hills, steppes, forests etc. There are
different accents and dialects. Take a look at Ukrainian dancing, Easter eggs – they and other cultural traditions
have multiple variations on the same theme. Ukrainian traditions, rituals, and ceremonies are not the same
throughout the country or even in each local area.
One has to mention all the superstitions and magic which are contributing to the cultural fabric of the country. So
what is Ukrainian culture? To say the least it is rich and complicated and it contributes greatly to what it means to
be Ukrainian.
You can add the religious faith and practices of the wide variety that exist in the country. Culture then becomes
even more complicated, but at the same time more simple and straight forward. This is true because religion has
rules (canons) and a clear focus on salvation of our souls. The church has the code of canon law, particular law, and
eparchial law. These books are practically in everybody’s hands. They clarify the questions of religious life. For
instance, it might be a cultural custom that you wear black to a funeral, or that you should not dance for a year after
the death of a very close family member. People ask what does the church say about that. Well, actually nothing.
Social custom or tradition which is not too clear or always consistent may have rules about it, but the church does
not. The church does not make it a sin when you do not follow the many traditions and customs which may be in
place in a parish. It then becomes a question of “what will the neighbours say?”
It really becomes a personal choice of what we do. The church is very much against superstition and magic but
some people mistakenly insist that their superstitions are actually God’s Will. These kinds of people are not
otherwise easily convinced. In a sense they do not do God any favours, when they infuse these external elements
into church belief and practices. Many people who study the scriptures and church teachings can see what it is that
God asks us and what is just a local custom or tradition.
Culture is there to serve people in their search for faith. It can never be an element which confuses or defuses our
faith. Knowing one’s catechism is very important. While the catechism is full of cultural elements, it helps us in our
search for God. It takes a person of faith to be able to see through all this.

W.A. Harmony Day at Maylands Peninsula Primary School
A proud moment for Petro Kachmar to present a talk about Ukraine at his daughter's school for W.A. Harmony
Day
Their daughter, Solomiya attends Maylands Peninsula Primary School and is in Grade 2.
Petro and his family are new arrivals and have lived in Perth for one and a half years. Petro is a Mining
Geologist and his wife, Yevheniya is a Geological Draftsperson, if anyone can be of assistance with a job
placement in their specific areas of expertise, please email Petro at [email protected]
“ Schools celebrate Harmony Day every year. Mia’s class chose Ukraine as a country they wanted to learn
about. I (Petro Kachmar) was invited to speak to students on Wed 18th March. I told them where Ukraine is,
about pysanky, embroideries, our famous food.
Later the children made posters—see photos below.
I also taught them how to write and say thank you—Дякую.
The children asked a lot of questions on animals and the weather in Ukraine. Everyone had a great time and I
enjoyed doing the talk. The kids are awesome—so keen to learn new things.” Petro Kachmar
