The Project Strengthening
health services
for children
Who: 40 health centers, healthcare professionals, volunteer community
health workers (304)
What: Installation of 2 modular solar systems/clinic (central building,
maternity ward), pilot installation of solar fridges (5 health centers, Kibuye
district)
When: 2013/2014
Where: Gitega province
How: In close collaboration with specialized development partners, UNICEF
Burundi will support the installation of modular solar systems (including
solar fridges in select pilot sites) in 40 health centers in Gitega province to
strengthen the delivery of routine and emergency services.
The Challenge •
•
•
•
•
Strengthen delivery of routine and emergency health services
through provision of fixed and task lighting for healthcare
professionals
Increase security of healthcare professionals and patients through
installation of automated outdoor lighting (central building, latrines)
Strengthen community health activities through provision of rechargeable, portable LED lights for volunteer health workers
Enable mobile-phone charging services for routine and emergency
health workers
Strengthen cold-chain supply system through introduction of solar
fridges
The Potential The Partnerships UNICEF: project conceptualization, seed funding/training
support
Development partner: seed funding, technical expertise
(product identification and supply)
Private sector partner: distribution, technical support

Electrification of 4 central rooms (waiting room,
central corridor, diagnostic room, in-patient room,
latrines)
Automated outdoor lighting (2 points on central
building and 1 for latrines)
Open-source conduit to enable mobile phone
charging services for professional and volunteer
health workers
Lowest possible voltage/number of cables/system
to minimize potential of energy diversion
Modular capacity to increase energy supply in
future to enable the additional powering of: radios,
television, solar fridges, microscope etc.
Enable proper vaccine stock management
through installation of energy-efficient fridges
(solar)
