Catholic Charities Disabilities Services OSHA Hazard Communication Training The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires that every employee who works with or is potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals receive training related to the chemicals in their environment, the hazards associated with those chemicals, steps to be taken to protect themselves from exposure and how to read the Safety Data Sheets related to each chemical. In order to complete this training, each employee must watch the following video, read the information below the video and complete the assessment. Overview of OSHA Hazard Communication Standard and how to read labels and the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) related to the chemicals in your work environment. The signs of an exposure include irritation, tearing, stinging, burning sensation, itching, swelling and/or redness. If exposed, flush the eye for 15 minutes with water, remove contact lenses. Get medical attention if irritation persists. Certo Heavy Duty Grill & Oven Cleaner. This chemical is a serious risk to eyes; the signs of exposure include eye burns. If exposed, flush with water and get immediate medical attention. Zenex Fresh Linen Air Freshner and Simoniz laundry detergent. The signs of exposure include irritation, redness and burning sensation. If exposed, flush with water and get immediate medical attention Austin A‐1 Bleach Commercial Disinfectant Sanitizer. This chemical may cause severe and permanent damage. The signs of exposure include irritation to eyes. If exposed, flush with water and get immediate medical attention. Xtra laundry detergent. This chemical is potentially corrosive to corneal tissue. The signs of exposure include irritation. If exposed, flush with water. If irritation continues get medical attention. Physical and Health Risks to SKIN: The following chemicals pose a risk to the skin with exposure or prolonged exposure: Hospicide Disinfectant Spray, Bio‐Enzymatic Urine Disgester, AIR‐X Super Stregth Foul Odor Eliminator, Monk Disinectant Wipes, EnvirOx Concentrate 118, Murphy Wood Oil Soap Liquid, Ultra ALL Free & Clear laundry detergent, ERA Liquid laundry detergent, Tide Pods laundry detergent, Simoniz laundry detergent, Fresh N Clean laundry detergent, Gain laundry detergent and Xtra laundry detergent. The signs of exposure include irritation, redness, and dryness. If exposed, rinse the area with large quantities of water. Remove any contaminated clothing, and do not wear again until laundered. Get medical attention if irritation persists. Certo Heavy Duty Grill & Oven Cleaner. The sign of exposure is skin burns. If exposed remove contaminated clothes and flush skin with water. Get medical attention immediately. Zenez Fresh Linen Air Freshener. This chemical may cause defatting of the skin. The sign of exposure is irritation. If exposed removed contaminated clothing and immediately flush exposed area with water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention. Austin A‐1 Bleach Commercial Disinfectant Sanitizer. Contact with this chemical can produce blistering and eczema. The sign of exposure is severe irritation. If exposed remove contaminated clothing and flush area with water. Wash with soap and water. If irritation develops or persists, get medical attention. Physical and Health Risks for INGESTION: The following chemicals pose a risk when ingestion occurs: AIR‐X Super Strength Foul Odor Eliminator, Monk Disinfectant Wipes, EvirOx Concentrate 118 Murphy Wood Oil Soap Liquid, Ultra ALL Free & Clear laundry detergent, ERA Liquid Detergent, Tide Pods laundry detergent, Liquid Ultra Downy laundry detergent, Simoniz laundry detergent, Fresh N Clean laundry detergent and Gain laundry detergent. The signs of exposure include transient gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, upset stomach vomiting or diarrhea. If exposed, drink water. Do not induce vomiting. Get medical attention. Certo Heavy Duty Grill & Oven Cleaner. The sign of exposure is irritation. This chemical is potentially fatal if ingested. If exposure occurs contact poison control center. Do not give mouth‐to‐mouth, use a mask with a one‐way valve. Rinse the mouth. Get immediate medical attention. Zenex Fresh Linen Air Freshener. This chemical poses an aspiration hazard if swallowed. If exposed, do not induce vomiting, seek immediate medical attention. Austin A‐1 Bleach Commercial Disinfectant Sanitizer. This chemical can cause corrosion of mucous membranes, severe esophageal burns and perforation of the esophagus or stomach. If exposed do not induce vomiting, and immediately drink a large quantity of water. Get immediate medical attention. Xtra laundry detergent. This chemical will cause strong irritation to internal body tissue. It may cause ulceration. If exposed do not induce vomiting, get immediate medical attention. Physical and Health Risks for INHALATION: The following chemicals pose a risk when inhalation occurs: Tide pods laundry detergent, Fresh N Clean laundry detergent and Gain laundry detergent. The signs include transient respiratory irritation; irritation to the nose, throat and respiratory tract. If exposed there is no specific first aid action listed, but move the person to fresh air. Hospicide Disinfectant Spray. This chemical can cause nasal and respiratory irritation at high concentration. If exposed remove to fresh air. Apply artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical attention. Certo Heavy Duty Grill & Oven Cleaner. This chemical can cause burns to the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. If exposed move to fresh air. Get medical attention immediately. Do not give mouth‐to‐mouth, use a mask with a one‐way valve. Rinse mouth. Zenex Fresh Linen Air Freshener. The signs of exposure include irritation of the respiratory tract, headache, dizziness, nausea, and loss of coordination. Extreme overexposure may result in unconsciousness and possibly death. If exposed remove to fresh air. If irritation persists, give oxygen and get medical attention. Austin A‐1 Bleach Commercial Disinfectant Sanitizer. The inhalation of vapors can cause bronchial irritation, coughing, difficulty in breathing, nausea and pulmonary edema. If exposed remove to fresh air and get medical attention if cough or other symptoms develop. How to reduce your risk of exposure? Wear goggles if splash or exposure is possible. No unusual precautions necessary What steps has CCDS taken to protect you from exposure? Employees should read all directions on the label of each chemical. Employee should ONLY use the chemical in accordance with the directions. Employees should use goggles, rubber gloves and protective equipment available at their worksite to protect themselves against any exposure. Employees must never ingest any chemical. Employees must wash hands after use of chemicals to avoid accidental ingestion. In the event of a chemical spill at the worksite, immediate clean up steps should be taken. Ensure that the surface has been flushed with water to remove the chemical. Surface will be wet; caution should be taken. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are available for all chemicals used at each work site, in the OSHA SDS binder. If you have any questions regarding the use of the chemicals in your work site, you should seek clarity from your supervisor.
