Central Coast First Nations Bear Working Group Coordinator
Job Purpose:
Bears are an integral part of First Nations’ cultural heritage, and the ecosystem that First
Nations live in and depend on. Under the leadership of the Central Coast Bear Working Group,
First Nations are taking bold steps to protect bears and their habitat through a tribal ban on
trophy hunting, scientific research, and a large-scale awareness campaign. The Central Coast
Bear Working Group coordinator will help coordinate and implement all activities of the
CCBWG and where required find additional resources to advance the CCBWG objectives and
work plans
Key Responsibilities:
To work closely with First Nations leadership and the Central Coast Bear Working Group
(CCBWG) to develop and implement strategic work plans for the 2015 calendar year. Based on
direction from the CCBWG: establish a terms of reference and governance structure for the
CCBWG, coordinate meetings of the CCBWG, collate and summarize all work that has been
completed to date, coordinate and implement public education and outreach activities including
the development of communications material, and coordinate fund raising activities and where
required .
Key Activities/Deliverables
1. Communicate regularly with CCBWG members and coordinate regular phone and in person
meetings, including the development of meeting agendas and minutes.
2. Coordinate the development of a CCBWG strategic plan and associated work plans for 2015
calendar year.
3. Support the implementation of all work plan activities identified by the CCBWG.
4. Complete the CCBWG terms of reference, including governance details, for the CCBWG as
a working group under the Central Coast Indigenous Resource Alliance (CCIRA).
5. Collate and summarize all work that has been completed to date that supports the objectives
and activities of the CCBWG.
6. Finalize existing work plan activities of the CCBWG including:
a. Develop and distribute anti-trophy hunting signs to communities
b. Develop and supply of outreach materials for communities including but not limited
to: stickers, cds, t-shirts.
c. Develop/Update website content and update the bearsforever.ca website
7. Serve as the media point of contact and coordinate any reviews or other requests of the
CCBWG. All responses and outreach will be conducted under the strict guidance of the
CCBWG media lead Jessie Housty.
8. Provide coordination on phase two implementation activities, including:
a. Implementation of the public outreach campaign
b. Preparing materials for regional tables, media outreach, community outreach
c. Clarifying role of indigenous law in the legal realm of Canada
d. Advancing scientific overview of bear population information
e. Creating outreach materials around the economic value of bear viewing
f. Completion of position paper
g. Creating a central database of resources, information, and plans for CCBWG
9. Coordinate fundraising activities, develop funding proposals, and where required manage
associated budgets and complete all reporting requirements.
Candidate should:











Have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental studies, resource
management or coastal/terrestrial planning and worked at least 5 years in a related field
Possess knowledge of resource and wildlife management.
Strong communications and outreach skills and be able to work in a variety of media.
Knowledge of the use and application of computer software such as MS Word, Excel,
Access, publisher, and Power Point
Have previous experience working with First Nations and stakeholders or in
multidisciplinary groups.
Experience with project management.
Have demonstrated proposal writing skills
Personal skills including: leadership, team oriented, energetic, motivated, outgoing,
persistent and conscientious.
Be self-motivated with excellent organizational skills and capable of working under tight
time constraints
Willingness to spend long periods of time away from home living in remote
communities.
Willingness to travel on float planes and boats and be able to spend periods of time in
close confines with unknown individuals
SALARY
This is a part-time contract where we will be looking for services for approximately 2 days a
week for up to 12 months. The contract total is $20,000.
