You had me @ #Hello
Thursday, April 23, 2015 / 4:00PM – 5:00PM Governance
Chambers, Price Center East, Level 4
It takes just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for
someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time.
In this short time, the other person forms an opinion about
you based on your appearance, your body language, your
demeanor, your mannerisms, your gender, your ethnicity
and how you are dressed. In this electronic age, many first
impressions are made without you being physically present.
Instagram, Facebook, Snap Chat, LinkedIn, Twitter—all of
these forums provide access to your personal life and invite
others to form opinions about who you are and what you are
about. In this workshop, you will explore the implications,
benefits and impact of first impressions. Come or you’ll wish
you did!
Presented by Stacia Smith Solomon, Director and Porsia
Thomas, Program Coordinator, Black Resource Center
The Power of an Empathetic Leader
Wednesday, April 29, 2015 / 3:00PM – 4:00PM
Red Shoe Room, Price Center West, Level 2
This Workshop will foster the development of an open mind
that welcomes diversity and innovation. It will help the
participants with self-awareness and social awareness.
Through experiential exercises, students will develop
techniques to understand people who are different from
them which will lead to collaboration, better engagement,
stronger bonds, and deeper trust. Through the lens of
empathy, participants will develop their capacity for
strategic thinking (conflict resolution, decision-making and
negotiation).
Presented by Lucia Ibarra, Interim Program Coordinator, CSI
– Communication & Leadership

so accustomed to a society that runs in fast-forward, this session
will offer a pause-button to help students become more effective
communicators in all aspects of life.
Presented by Kevin Corcoran, Graduate Student & Teaching Associate,
School of Communication, San Diego State University

Fake It Until You Become It

don’t belong? Do you think your success has been due to luck? Are
you afraid that someone will find out you’re a fraud? This interactive
seminar will discuss issues related to Imposter Syndrome, which is
prevalent in high achieving and 1st generation college students. The

Is Anybody Really Listening? Active Listening
Strategies for Building Stronger Relationships
Monday, May 18, 2015 / 10:00AM – 11:00AM
Green Table Room, Price Center West, Level 2
This workshop will offer strategies and tools for becoming
more active and effective listeners both professionally
and personally. Listening is often an understated and
underdeveloped skill. We are generally required to spend
more time listening than reading, speaking, or writing;
however, listening remains the least practiced skill. By
improving listening skills, students can learn how to better
approach leadership roles, personal and professional
relationships, and ultimately promote deeper connectedness
with others.
Presented by Kaitlin Brooks, Adjunct Professor, Mesa College

Cultivating Meaning and Optimism for Yourself
and Others

What makes you “happy?” Did you know you have the ability
to determine almost half of your overall sense of happiness?
Through engaging exercises, students will learn about
emotional contagion and how to assess their current degree
of happiness. We’ll address managing expectations, finding
work-life balance, and leaning into kindness for deeper
social connections. Students will develop a happiness plan
for increasing well-being and cultivating happiness for
themselves and their relationships.
Presented by Lisa Gates, Ph.D., Program Coordinator, and
Ruben Nuñez, Graduate Intern, CSI – Communication and
Leadership
