Session
Surrounded by all that yarn and can’t wait
to pick up a pair of needles or a crochet
hook? Spend an hour trying a technique,
learning a skill, or just playing with yarn in
new ways.
New products,
unfamiliar techniques—
experts show you how
it works.
New knitters and crocheters take next
steps by learning to seam, trying free form
crochet, or finding out why people get
all knotted up about “gauge.” Look for
the pink bull’s eye — these Essential Skills
classes are geared for you.
Win Prizes
More experienced? Comfortable with
lace but intimidated by double knitting?
Fluent in Fair Isle but never tried entrelac?
Market Sessions give you a taste of a
technique, letting you decide if you’ll go
back for seconds or say “no thanks!”
Register daily for
prizes and the Grand
Prize cash drawing
on Sunday at 1:00
pm. (You must be
present to win!)
Everyone! For one hour, explore your
creative side with dyeing with Kool Aid,
the mystery of entrelac crochet, and the
magic of knitting in both directions. Learn
the basics of beading or the wonder of
working yarn with a hook instead of two
needles.

A software professional as well as knitting teacher, designer
and technical editor, Beth’s curiosity has lead her to visit many
countries (stranded color, EPS, k1b, lace, ...) on the knitting
world map. Originally from New England, she now lives in
San Francisco, where mountains, ocean and Haight Street are
always good sources of inspiration. What she loves most about
teaching is finding ways to make light bulbs pop on in her
student’s head and helping them grow as knitters.
Beth will lead this wonderful opportunity to learn
to knit for free! Learn to cast on, knit, purl, bind off,
and go home with a pair of needles and yarn.
For those friends and relatives who wish to share
your love for knitting and crochet, invite them along
for these afternoon sessions held in The Market.

NEW TT17 Magic Twist-Knit With simple knitting and a flip of the work, you can
create pieces that look like dramatic cables. We will make a bracelet that shows the
technique, and students will receive a pattern for a scarf. Materials: 20 or 30 yards of #4
(worsted-weight) yarn and needles appropriate for that yarn.

TT2 Continental Knitting Continental knitting involves tensioning the yarn
in the hand holding the unworked stitches (for most people this is the left hand)
and using the other needle to pick stitches through in a quick and efficient
manner. It is a great technique to have in your knitting repetoire. It can solve
a multitude of knitting problems or just be a good companion to the way you
already knit. Your instructor will teach the basics of tensioning the yarn and
picking the stitches rather than throwing. We will learn the knit and purl stitches
and have time to practice and discuss how to transition to this useful method of
knitting. Materials: Any yarn and appropriate needles for sampling.

Friday 12:30pm - 1:30pm or Saturday 3:30pm - 4:30pm
TT8 Knitting in Both Directions Knitting in both directions allows the knitter
to always be looking at the right side, even if you are knitting flat. The work is never
turned, and the knitter cleverly works both knit and purl stitches from the same
side. This saves time when working on a very small number of stitches as for
bobbles or entrelac, and it saves effort when working on a very large number of
stitches. Your instructor will teach the basics of working knit and purl stitches
from the right side of the work. There is time for practice and a discussion of
how to use this technique in your every-day knitting. Materials: Any yarn and
appropriate needles for sampling.

Double Knit in Color Double knitting in color creates a two-sided,
double-thick fabric with an image on one side and the exact negative of the
image on the other side. In class, we will learn the basic steps and get started
on a coaster-sized sample with a simple motif. This will require concentration
and experience in reading patterns and instructions comfortably. Materials:
50 yards of smooth, plain #4 (worsted-weight) yarn in two STRONGLY CONTRASTING, SOLID
colors — wool or wool-blend preferred and US 7 needles.

hand-dyed yarns and how to get the most out of them. We will start on a
cup cozy that will demonstrate techniques for blending colors, avoiding
pooling and making those gorgeous yarns look as good in a project as
they do in a skein. Materials: Skein of #4 (worsted-weight) hand-dyed yarn, wound and
ready to knit with at the start of class, needles appropriate for that yarn, 5 safety pins or
locking stitch markers.

freeform mode. Unlock your creativity and make things in a fun, organic
way, riffing off of what you’ve already done as you simultaneously move
within parameters of your own making. You’ll get to play with Kellie’s stash
and choose colors and textures to blend in your sample. Materials: several sizes
of crochet hooks, ranging from D to K. Prerequisite: Must know basics of crochet. This is not a

NEW TT26 Picking up Stitches Do you sometimes get stuck when it’s time
to pick up stitches? This skill is needed in so many projects, from armholes,
buttons bands and collars all the way to zipper facings, it’s good to know
how to start knitting where there were no stitches before. What methods
are there? How do you know how many to pick up? These and other
mysteries will be examined with Kellie as we start on a bag project. Materials:
10-50 yards each of 4 or 5 different colors of #4 (worsted-weight) yarns, US 7 needles (straight
or circular).

Crochet Sessions
Entrelac crochet is a way of doing Tunisian

the crocheter’s version of Entrelac knitting. It can usually be done with a
regular crochet hook and any size yarn. You will learn this stitch technique
while making a small mat/coaster. Materials: #4 (worsted-weight) yarn in two colors,
1 oz. each, size G crochet hook, scissors, tapestry needle.
Saturday 12:30pm - 1:30pm
CR10 Crocodile Stitch Crochet This mystery stitch has been a buzz
word in the crochet world the last couple of years. Come and learn this
stitch and go home with a free neck warmer pattern. Materials: 4 oz. one color
of #4 (worsted-weight) yarn, tapestry needle, scissors, and H crochet hook.
Sunday 1:30am - 2:30pm
CLASS COLOR CODES
CC8 Mosaic Knitting Learn to knit with color without the fuss of having
to use bobbins or carry more than one color throughout the row. You can
create some beautiful patterns using mosaic knitting, both in garter and
stockinette stitch. In this class we will knit a cuff for take-out coffee cups.
Must be able to knit and purl. Materials: 1 oz. each of two, high-contrast colors of #4

Stacey has been bringing cuteness into the crochet-world with her adorable stuffed animals since 2008. She is the author of Cuddly Crochet and Crocheted Softies and has self-published over 100 irresistibly cute animal patterns through
her website, FreshStitches. Stacey firmly believes that there’s no ‘right way’ to crochet and enthusiastically experiments with a variety of techniques (even less-popular ones!) to achieve the desired finished product. This philosophy
spills over into her teaching style: she encourages students to discover what works best for their own crocheting style
for maximum crochet enjoyment!

CC5 Stranded Color Learn to work holding 2 colors at the same time!
Commonly called Fair Isle knitting, this technique for stranding colors across the
back lets you create brightly colored and patterned fabrics. While working on a
small bag/hat project you’ll practice getting an even tension (not too tight, not
too loose), learn ways to prevent yarns from twisting, and try different holding
techniques. Come get a taste of this classic knitting technique! Materials: 2 balls (50
yards each) #5 (chunky-weight) yarn in 2 complementary colors and a US 10½ circular needle 16” long
