Resident of the Month
Ethel S.
Ethel moved into FMAL in
June 2014, and from the start
we have enjoyed every day we
have shared with her. She is one
of our resident volunteers that
sometimes can go unnoticed.
Whether it is editing our monthly newsletter and calendar, reorganizing our library, or helping
new residents adjust to their
new home, Ethel is always there
to help us with anything.
Ethel was born in Montana to
her parents, Joseph and Mary
Scammon. She was very close
with her brother, Sam, and her
sisters, Edna, Laura, and Mary
Ann. Ethel worked throughout
her adult life as a teacher and
also proofread for her church’s
bulletin. When she wasn’t working she took care of her five
children: Beth, Maureen, David,
Rose, Cynthia, and Joanna.
caring, and generous woman
and we will miss her dearly. We
thank her for the time she has
spent with us and wish her well
for the journeys to come.
This month Ethel is moving to
her daughter’s home in Tacoma,
Washington. She is a very kind,

Forgetfulness can be a normal part of aging. As people get older,
changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain. As a

forgetfulness, not serious memory problems.
Some older adults also find that they don’t do as well as younger people on complex memory or learning tests. Scientists have
found, though, that given enough time, healthy older people can
do as well as younger people do on these tests. In fact, as they
age, healthy adults usually improve in areas of mental ability such
as vocabulary.
Our residents enjoyed the special
menu for our Easter Luncheon.
Some memory problems are related to health issues that may be
treatable. For example, medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, chronic alcoholism, tumors or infections in the brain or
blood clots in the brain can cause memory loss or possibly dementia. Some thyroid, kidney, or liver disorders also can lead to memory loss. A doctor should treat serious medical conditions like these
as soon as possible.
We had a great turnout for our
