MVC ANNOUNCES 2015 BASEBALL ALL-CONFERENCE TEAMS
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Evansville outfielder Kevin Kaczmarski
and Missouri State ace Jon Harris highlight the 2015
MVC all-conference baseball teams, being tabbed
Joe Carter Player of the Year and Pitcher of the Year,
respectively. Missouri State's Keith Guttin has been
named the league's Dan Callahan Coach of the Year,
after leading the Bears to their fourth regular-season
title in program history and the top seed in this week's
MVC Baseball Championship. Kaczmarski is Evansville's
first-ever Player of the Year, while Hall is the sixth Bear to
be named Pitcher of the Year. Illinois State left-hander
Jacob Hendren was named Newcomer of the Year
and Bears' rookie third baseman Jake Burger earned
Freshman of the Year honors. Missouri State shortstop
Joey Hawkins was named the league's Defensive Player
of the Year.
Kaczmarski, a senior outfielder from Cary, Ill., leads the
nation in batting average (.478), on-base percentage
(.554) and triples (nine). His 28 multi-hit games and
16 multi-RBI games are both tops in the MVC, and he
also leads the league in hits (85), RBI (55), slugging
percentage (.753), total bases (134) and has a perfect
1.000 fielding percentage. Kaczmarski has reached
base safely in all but four games this season and also
had a league-high 22-game hitting streak earlier this
season. Kaczmarski is the first-ever Purple Ace to earn
the Valley’s Joe Carter Player of the Year honor.
Harris, a product of Florissant, Mo., owns a league-best
2.08 ERA among starting pitchers and has registered a
6-1 record in 12 appearances. His 99 strikeouts rank
third in the Valley, and he has fanned double-digit batters in five of his 12 starts, including four against MVC
opponents. His .198 opponent batting average leads
the league, as Harris has allowed just 22 runs in 82.1
innings pitched. The junior right-hander has allowed
three or fewer runs in all but one game this season,
while also registering one complete game. Harris is
the sixth Bear to win the Valley's Pitcher of the Year
honor, joining Rob Garola (1997), Brad Ziegler (2003),
Tim Clubb (2008), Buddy Baumann (2009) and Nick
Petree (2012).

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Hendren, a Le Roy, Ill., native, and a Heartland Community College transfer, made an immediate impact
on the mound for the Redbirds this season. In 14
appearances, he owns a 2.84 ERA with 92 strikeouts,
tallying a 10-2 record and allowing just 32 runs in 98.1
innings of work. His 10 wins are tied for the most in the
Valley and also match a Redbird single-season record.
Hendren has recorded a league-best three complete
games and has tallied double-digit strikeouts twice
this season. Hendren is the first-ever Redbird to earn
the Valley's Newcomer of the Year honor.
Burger, a third baseman who hails from Chesterfield,
Mo., has been sensational in his Missouri State debut,
ranking in the Valley's top-10 in nearly every offensive
category. He leads all freshmen in hits (68, T-4th in
MVC), total bases (103, 6th in MVC), RBI (40, T-7th
in MVC), batting average (.335, 8th in MVC), doubles
(20, 1st in MVC) and triples (3, T-7th in MVC). His 22
multi-hit games are the third most in the league and
his 10 multi-RBI games rank first among all league
rookies. Burger has reached base safely in all but
five games this season and becomes the eighth Missouri State player to earn the league's Freshman of
the Year honor.
Hawkins, a product of Whitby, Ontario, earns the
league's Defensive Player of the Year award. With
incredible range in the field, Hawkins owns a .978
fielding percentage with 57 putouts and a league-high
167 assists. He also ranks seventh in the league in
fielding double plays (29). Hawkins is the first Bear to
earn the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Guttin, now in his 33rd season as head coach of the
Missouri State baseball squad, led the Bears to their
fourth regular-season Missouri Valley Conference
title in school history. The Bears 18-3 MVC record is
the best in program history since the league started
the eight-team, three-game series format, while the
41 total wins are tied for Guttin's fourth-highest win
total since coming to Missouri State.

Guttin picked up his 1,100th career victory this season
against UALR (March 17), and ranks 32nd all-time
among NCAA Division I coaches in total wins. With a
career record of 1,130-716 (.612), Guttin currently
ranks 13th amongst active coaches on the NCAA’s
all-time wins list.
Guttin earns his fifth Missouri Valley Conference Coach
of the Year honor, winning previously in 1993, 2001,
2003 and 2008. Only Wichita State former skipper
Gene Stephenson (11) has more Valley Coach of the
Year honors than Guttin.
Regular-season champion and top-seeded Missouri
State, as well as second-place Dallas Baptist, each
placed a league-high five players on the all-conference
first team. The Bears first-team selections included
Jake Burger (3B), Tate Matheny (OF), Matt Hall (SP),
Jon Harris (SP) and Bryan Young (RP), while the Patriots
first-team honorees were Drew Turbin (2B), Camden
Duzenack (SS), Daniel Salters (C), Daniel Sweet (DH)
and Brandon Koch (RP). Illinois State had three firstteam selections in Mason Snyder (1B), Paul DeJong
(UT) and Jacob Hendren (SP), while Evansville's Kevin
Kaczmarski (OF) and Wichita State's Sam Hilliard (OF)
round out the list of first-team accolades.
Featured on the second team are five Braves, including
Spencer Gaa (3B), Drew Carlile (C), Isaac Smith (OF),
Elliot Ashbeck (SP) and Matt Dennis (RP), and four
Patriots, in Tagg Duce (OF), Justin Wall (OF), Joseph
Shaw (SP) and Chance Adams (RP). Two Bears, including Justin Paulsen (1B) and Joey Hawkins (SS) and two
Shockers, in Ryan Tinkham (1B) and Daniel Kihle (OF)
are also featured on the second team. Illinois State's
Joe Kelch, Indiana State's Jeff Degano and Southern
Illinois' Aaron Hauge round out the members of the
2015 second team.
An additional 10 players were honored as part of the
honorable mention all-conference team, as studentathletes must receive at least two votes to be named
as honorable mention. A nine-member all-defensive
team was also named for the fourth-straight season.
All-conference honors and specialty awards are voted
on by the league’s eight head baseball coaches.
