to Open in 2015

“That’s why we’re developing an oncology campus, bringing together the best physicians and
the latest technology for diagnosis and treatment of various cancers – all in one convenient
location.”
Phase 1 of Jupiter Medical’s Center’s comprehensive oncology campus, to be located at 2111
Military Trail in Jupiter, will open with the relocation of the Margaret W. Niedland Breast
Center in April, 2015.
The new two-story, 26,000 sq. ft. center will offer breast cancer screening and diagnostics,
utilizing state-of-the art breast diagnostic equipment, including 3D mammography
(tomosynthesis), breast ultrasound, stereotactic biopsies that use mammography to pinpoint
a breast spot needing removal, as well as a new and calming Caring MRI Suite, and C-View
technology that creates diagnostic images with increased accuracy and reduced radiation
exposure time.

• Thanks to the generosity of the Walsh family, we established the Frank E. and Mary D. Walsh Robotic Surgery Program.
It has been very successful, we recently acquired a second robot. Jupiter Medical Center is one of the first facilities in the world
with the da Vinci® Xi™ system—technology that enables us to offer patients better outcomes.
• The philanthropic support of David and Lynn Nicholson made it possible to open a second cardiac catheterization lab.
This investment in technology and talent means we can all get state-of-the-art heart care, closer to home. Jupiter Medical Center
just achieved Level I designation so our cath lab can now offer the latest methods to detect and treat heart disease, whether it’s a
scheduled diagnostic test, an artery-clearing interventional treatment or a life-saving emergency angioplasty.
• We established the Joe Namath Neurological Research Center and have begun an FDA-approved clinical trial to study if
hyperbaric oxygen therapy can reverse the effects of traumatic brain injury. We’re working with Mr. Namath to raise
$10 million to ensure appropriate patients may receive this promising experimental therapy, regardless of ability to pay.

• In a number of exciting ways, we are working to forever change the way cancer patients receive care in our community :
• We have plans for a whole new oncology campus. We broke ground on the first phase of the project, the Margaret W.
Niedland Breast Center. When completed, there will be nothing in our region like this center: 26,000 square feet dedicated
to the most advanced imaging for women. The second phase will be the relocation of the Foshay Cancer Center.
We’ll establish a new 75,000 square foot facility that will combine outstanding talent, technology and bright new hope for
patients with all types of cancer.
• We brought a breakthrough in radiation treatment into the operating room. This new method of intraoperative radiation
is offered in just a handful of hospitals across the country, and in some cases can reduce weeks of radiation treatment down
to a single dose.
• We partnered with Scripps Florida for breast and lung cancer clinical research.
• In the spring, Jupiter Medical Center will have the most advanced CyberKnife radiosurgery system in the Southeastern U.S.
The CyberKnife® M6™ system is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors anywhere in the body.
• In January, the highly anticipated Florence DeGeorge Pavilion will open. This 85,000 square foot expansion of our main
campus will house the Florence DeGeorge Children’s and Women’s Program (Obstetrics), the new Anderson Family
Orthopedic and Spine Center of Excellence, and a brand new kitchen, cafeteria, and physician dining area and lounge.
• We have more work ahead to continue our evolution into an integrated health care system of care. More philanthropic
support is needed to realize our vision for the Grossman Wellness Center and to complete the Frenchman’s Creek Center
of Excellence for Digestive Health.

The second phase of the oncology
campus is the relocation of the Foshay
Cancer Center from the main campus.
In addition to external beam radiation and
chemotherapy, this new 74,000 sq. ft. building will
house CyberKnife technology to perform stereotactic
radio surgery, CT simulation, integrative care,
conference facilities, multidisciplinary clinic space and
physician office space for medical oncologists, radiation
oncologists, surgical oncologists and other oncology
related specialists.
“Oncology has really moved away from taking care
of a general group of patients,” Dr. Schwarzberg points
out. “Personalizing and sub-specialization are the norm
today. A general oncologist is becoming a thing of the
past. Now, oncologists are specializing in specific areas,
such as breast cancer or lung cancer.
When the oncology campus is completed, all of the
oncology services, specialties and sub-specialties will be
under one roof, one umbrella. For example, if a patient
goes to see their urologist, they can also see a medical

oncologist, radiologist and any other related specialists
who are involved with their treatment – and see them
all in one place. It’s a joint plan of action, with various
physicians helping to provide the optimum medical
solution.
Dr. Schwarzberg predicts that as the volume and
integration of services expands, there are other services
that Jupiter Medical Center will add to what is already
being provided.
“Part of medicine is that you always need technologies
and there are always new ways of doing things,” he
stresses. “Our commitment is to ultimately improve
and evolve. Because if you do it perfectly today, it’s not
going to be perfect in two or three months. So you
need to continue to evolve and some of that’s personal
education, but it’s also community education and
evolving technology.”

Surgeon, Friend & Surfer Remembered
The untimely passing of Jupiter orthopedic surgeon Frank F. Cook, M.D. on October 2, 2014 has left a deep void
with family, friends and legions of grateful patients throughout the Jupiter Medical Center community.
We at Jupiter Medical Center were fortunate to have Dr. Cook serve as our Chief of Surgery, as well as a key
participant on numerous hospital committees.
A native Ohioan, Dr. Cook moved to Florida during his high school years. He then attended the University of
Florida and later the University of Florida College of Medicine where he graduated in 1980. He completed his
orthopedic surgical residency at University of Florida College of Medicine JHEP - Jacksonville, where he met his
future wife, Julie Shrewsbury.
Dr. Cook was an avid sports enthusiast and began his private practice in Jupiter in 1986 specializing in Sports
Medicine. Over the years, he would become an orthopedic consultant to the Florida Marlins, Montreal Expos,
St. Louis Cardinals, and LA Dodgers.
In 2009, he shifted his private practice to focus solely on sports injuries, including arthroscopic surgeries of the
shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle.
He was passionate about physical fitness, and was an active runner, swimmer and biker as well as playing baseball
and other sports.
But his greatest passion, next to his family, was the one for which he’ll be most remembered – surfing.
He continually sought the perfect wave, and was a familiar face on Jupiter beaches and surfing haunts the world over.
Our heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends.
May the surf always be up, Dr. Frank.

Donors Push To Bring New Breast Cancer
Surgery/Radiation Therapy To JMC!
To date, Jupiter Medical Center has received $1,155,000 of the $1,400,000 goal to acquire
Electron IntraOperative Radiation Therapy (e-IORT), a major advancement in breast cancer treatment.
The therapy delivers a single, fractional dose of radiation directly to a tumor or tumor bed during
surgery. By delivering radiation at the time cancerous tissue is removed, one treatment is the
equivalent of six-weeks of post-operative treatment.
“This is a highly accurate single dose of radiation because we can visually locate the exact target area
or tumor bed and we are doing this when any potentially remaining tumor cells are at the most
sensitive. At the same time, we are sparing surrounding normal tissue from radiation.”

“This is a world-class breast cancer treatment option,” says Dr. John A.P. Rimmer, Medical Director
of the Kristin Hoke Breast Health Program at Jupiter Medical Center. “Women will be able to

Florida Fish For Life
Does It Again!
Because of this highly successful fishing tournament
held in January 2014, Florida Fish for Life donated $15,000
to Jupiter Medical Center’s Foshay Cancer Center.
Fred Miller, founder of Florida Fish for Life, was diagnosed with
stage III colon cancer in 2003 and he made it his mission to raise awareness of the disease
and help others affected by it and, he has succeeded by all rights. Florida Fish for Life has raised
a total of over $500,000 for cancer centers during its 11 years. Jupiter Medical Center
is grateful for the impact Florida Fish for Life has had on cancer care for our community.

From the moment guests stepped into the club and had their photo taken compliments of South Florida

vintage pieces, as their artist, Melissa Sixma, painted a vibrant piece that was given to Jupiter Medical
Center to adorn the new Children’s and Women’s Services Floor in the new Florence DeGeorge Pavilion

which consisted of the steel drum duo Stick2Pan who played during a cocktail hour followed by
DJ Matt Pane Gasser who spun the tunes into the wee hours of the night. Throughout the evening guests

WHY PEOPLE MAKE
PLANNED GIFTS
Why exactly do people make planned gifts to charitable
organizations? When we think about such gifts, it may seem natural
to envision tax benefits, which is understandable. Congress has
certainly provided many tax incentives to encourage private support
of worthy charitable organizations. In truth, most of the thoughtful
gifts and bequests we receive from our friends are motivated by
reasons that have little to do with taxes:

• They have confidence in the people entrusted with guiding
that mission;
• They realize that a strong financial position is vital to our future;
• They have a special interest in a particular area and want to provide for its support;
