The Pine Needle Press Volume 31 Issue 4 ! Pine Tree Quilt Guild April 2014 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since 1984. Published monthly except August. 11255 Banner Mine Way, Nevada City 95959 www.PineTreeQuiltGuild.com April President’s Message Welcome daylight savings time and spring! The flowers and buds blooming, new leaves and more daylight energize me! It’s a great time of year to complete quilts and enter them in the Spring Time in the Pines quilt show. Our next Guild meeting is April 1, and that’s the deadline for getting quilt show entry forms to Nancyan Tracy. We are honored to have our very own FAMOUS Sandra Bruce for our April guest speaker, and workshop presentation, Material Matrix. the next day, Sandra has a five page article in Quilting Arts Magazine this month! Congratulations, Sandra! Rumors abound within any group and our Guild is no exception. Recently I was asked why the Guild needs to do fund raising when there is a projected surplus in the Guild of over $8,000 this year. Hmmm, that’s news to the Board! The reality is $8,170 is the profit budgeted for the Quilt Show profit. To summarize the 2014 budget, we have a total income projected of $23,670, and expenditures of $27,662 for a shortfall of $3,662. That means we are spending $3,662 more than we are expecting to take in! Our expenses are so high because we are very generous to our community and members. We give scholarships, community services, pay storage and meeting space rent, insurance, have quality speakers and workshops, and on and on! Some years we are able to add to our surplus, and then there are other years we have had to use some of our surplus, and are grateful it’s there. If anyone has any concerns or questions about fundraising, finance, or any activities offered by the Guild, please bring those concerns directly to an Executive Board member to be addressed. Our Guild consists of an amazing group of energetic ladies! Without their ideas and capabilities to carry out projects, we would be a pretty dull place. A huge thank you to Ruth Bertaccini, Joan Mosley and Kate Grant for the fun March Mixer, Lois Hodges for the Challenge Quilt contest, and Joy Waggener, LeVeta Nevius and Margaret Boothby for presenting their entertaining play “The Road to California.” It was a delightful evening and all who attended went away smiling. Everyone is encouraged to sign up to work on the Quilt Show! It’s always fun to be one of the helpers and be involved with the set-up, take down or the Show itself. Page 3 Patchwork Star for April Lila Sugg If you were to look up the word “classy” in the dictionary, you would see Lila's picture. I've always said, “When I grow up I want to be just like Lila!” She and husband, Tom, have an exceptional panoramic view of Lake Wildwood, perched high among stately oaks and mossy green rocks. Married 63 years they have lived here 36 years. Life is good! Precious, doting daughter-in-law Julia, married to their son Edward, makes sure Lila is taken to all quilting events. An Asian influence decidedly permeates each room. Flowers were everywhere. I was the bee. Quilts, hooked rugs, dolls and furniture lent a visual serenity with rich leathery browns, jewel tones, sapphires and vermilions. Liberal yet subdued touches of Sulky Silver or Madeira Gold metallic quilting threads (stitched with a size 14 needle) grace many original designs. “Success”, she claims, “is due to Sewer's Aid for machine or hand work.” Adding emphatically, “I never take my quilts to a professional long-arm quilter. I wouldn't feel like it was mine!” Zillions of cotton thread spools are ordered through a Connecting Threads catalogue. No glue, no double-sticky products are ever used. Lila is bent on saving a nickel, searching out deals. Lila is a natural born artist with a poet's eye for design. She can draw anything! Cherubic young faces and whimsical animals come alive in her drawings. A special crayon technique, soft and ethereal, graces many quilts. Forty some years ago she worked painting airplanes at Hamilton Air Force Base where Tom was a pilot. Her favorite job there, however, was being a secretary where she could dress up. Lila loves to dress prettily. An artistic prodigy, she has sewn coats and jackets second to none. Separate bins of lace, ultra suede, elastics, wools and silks are neatly categorized. Twelve discreetly hidden shelves of “stash”, tightly stuffed, reveal a beguiling collection of favorites--heavy on the Asian. Claiming, “I know where everything is”, sweet Lila demystifies her passion. “When you're a sewer you have to have supplies.” This is a home where beauty in her person is equal to the beauty in her creation. A sophisticated iron and ironing board combo called “the Monster” from Italy is prominent among five sewing machines. A little demo proved it extra steam worthy with the ability to pre-shrink fabrics. Yes, she is a perfectionist. Lila is not afraid to try new techniques. She's entered Sulky Thread contests, hand-painted flowers on the bathroom wall and lately taken a potholder quilting class. Additionally, she's a needleturn applique purist—no raw edges. Gleaning fresh ideas from TV, magazines and books, Lila insists, “I'm a good copier!” Like a pretty lullabye, soft spoken and unpretentious, Lila is without pretense. She is a cherished legend among us, prompting a quote from Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! We also had only 13 quilts in our special Charter/Hall of Honor exhibit. I am hoping that each and every one of you are working hard to get those quilt entries in. We are also in great need for volunteers to work the show. I know that White Glove, alone, still needs 18 volunteers to work both Saturday and Sunday with other areas still needing people to work. Please consider what you can do to make this show a special one. Thank you! At the last Guild meeting all of the flyers, bookmarks and invite cards which were brought to the meeting were picked up. In addition several members have volunteered to take packets of flyers and bookmarks to out-of-area guild meetings which they plan to attend and several have requested additional invite cards. Yesterday I found our Show bookmarks already on the counters of two local businesses – and we haven’t even started to distribute to local merchants yet! PTQG members are the best! We will have additional flyers and bookmarks available at the April Guild meeting. Be sure and pick some up to share with friends and family, your church group, golf friends, book group, etc., etc.! If you have any publicity suggestions or need additional flyers/ bookmarks, please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the other Quilt Show Publicity Committee members: Kate Grant, Kristan Harrington, Ginny Lee and Joy Waggener. Keep up the good work of getting the word out about our amazing show – all your efforts are very much appreciated! Sharon Ellisor, Quilt Show Publicity Chair. 274-1695 Quilt Show Programs I am still looking for programs from other Guild shows! It is helpful to see what other Guilds include or omit. For example -- how many are including advertising? What kind? How do they list quilt entries? Thanks for bringing me programs. Lois Hodges The Pine Needle Press! ! Third in a series: ! ! ! ! Page 7 “Highlights of Guild Positions” Pine Tree Quilt Guild Scholarships The Pine Tree Quilt Guild promotes education in the textile arts through participation in the guild, outreach programs, speakers and workshops. In addition, the Guild furthers its educational goals by the granting of two scholarships each year to graduating high school students or current college students who are pursuing study in textile arts, design or other art-related fields. Applicants must be residents of Nevada County. Applicants may apply to their scholarship office at their respective high school or may apply directly to the scholarship chair of the Guild who will forward an application to the applicant. All completed applications must be received no later than April 1st. One award is in memory of Jeanne E. Gill and the other is in memory of Carol Phillips. Each scholarship is for $1,500 and is administered by their chosen college upon proof of registration. The scholarship chair is responsible for sending letters to all the Nevada County public and private schools as well as the junior colleges in the area inviting students to apply. Once the applications are received in April, a scholarship committee is formed to evaluate the applications based on art interests, grade point average, need, goals and college preparedness. Two recipients are chosen and notified. The awards are granted at each school’s Award Night, the students are encouraged to display a piece of their art work at the Pine Tree Quilt Guild show in May and they are invited to meet the guild at our June meeting. The scholarship chair coordinates these activities as well as the delivery of the scholarship money to each applicable college. Working with the students is an enriching experience. Our scholarships help remarkable students pursue their artrelated dreams. Pat Gillings Scholarship Props committee is looking for some helpers to set up and take down props. You get a free pass to the show! We are also looking for some silk flower garlands. The type that are about 6-8' long. We need about 6 garlands. Robin Mello received her Hall of Honor award. Marjorie McConnell continued promoting her Community Service projects, receiving oodles of material as members tried for a prize in the drawing. Lorna Tiller collected money for the cookbook, Sips, Savories and Sweets which will be distributed at our April meeting, with remaining copies being sold at the Quilt Show in May. Everyone had fun as they chatted, voted for the Challenge Quilts, and sampled the treats, many from the cookbook! Page 8 The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Page 9 Guild Challenge Congratulations to the winners! Thanks for the wonderful level of participation. We had 16 “Color, Shape and Noun” quilts at the March meeting and they were all beautiful. Please remember to fill out a quilt show entry form for your quilt. If you have a Challenge Quilt that wasn’t finished for the voting, please finish it and enter it in the Quilt Show. They will be hung together so everyone an see our challenge results. Special Thanks to the Cook family, Trudie Ferreira and Mary Serpa. Congratulations to Lettie Lewis (33 yards) and Anne Wilson (10 yards), the winners of the gift card drawing. Lettie stated that she was just cleaning out her stash and did not know about the donation special! Thank you Lorna Straka for the idea and for donating the tickets. In April we will have two (2) Community Workshop days. Wednesday, April 5, and Thursday, April 17. We have quite a few small, baby and toddler/wheelchair size quilts that need to be quilted. Please bring your machine and spend the day quilting – nothing fancy required and this is a great way to practice quilting. There are two machines available, just call and let me know so that one is reserved in your name. Quilt Show help needed! Volunteers are needed at the Community Services Booth at the Quilt Show. Shifts are two (2) hours but we are flexible – even an hour will help us out. We have a new location this year . . . right inside the doors of the Northern Pines Building, next to Silent Auction and across from Baskets. I think this may be the most fun area of the whole show! Everything is provided – sewing machines, thread, needles, fabric, and design board. All you need to do is glide in between your other shift responsibilities and sew, maybe answer a question or two here and there. Call or email Marjorie, 265 9787, [email protected], or sign up at the April meeting. CS quilts are not only made for the December distribution. If you know anyone who needs a quilt, we distribute throughout the year. We meet at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Grass Valley, 9:00 – 3:00; 2014 calendar dates below. We will be working on a variety of easy quilts, assembling quilt kits, matching tops to backs, and working on the baby quilts for Nicaragua and the graduation quilts for foster youth. I have received a few for both programs so please let me know if you are also working on one. Small and large quilt tops are also available for you to practice your free motion quilting – stitch in the ditch, sew from corner to corner, stipple, meander, or whatever you want to try. Let me know – I will bring quilts to guild meeting, meet you, or you can work on one at Community Services. Community Services continues to make good use of your donations of scrap batting, thread, plastic zipper bags, and fabric. All of these items go into making or storing quilts. Please join us for an hour or for the day – we have a project to fit your time constraints. Remember – chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, and lots of fun and laughter. Do bring a lunch or a snack. If you cannot attend CS but would like to help, please contact me. No need to bring supplies – we also have sewing machines, rulers and rotary cutters, fabric, and thread. 2014 Community Service Dates April 17 May 15 June TBA October 16 November 20 July 17 August 21 December September 18 NO MEETING Thanks, Marjorie McConnell Affiliates 2014 Ben Franklin Crafts 598 Sutton Way, GV Christine Barnes Designs 208 Mill St. GV Deby’s Sierra Sewing 245 E. Workshop: April 2nd! Seventh Day Adventist Church Hwy 174 8:30AM In this workshop, Sandra has students use a photo, which she supplies, to experience and learn her Material Matrix process. The class is about the process, and all will be following the steps along with her. Some of the points covered include: What makes a good photo for a quilt; How to interpret a photo using a grid; value and color; curved piecing; using a mix of prints and solids; and ideas about quilting. The class is about the process, and her goal is to have each student leave the class confident that they will be able to finish her quilt and go on to more complicated images.
