For a fitter, healthier and happier life

For a fitter, healthier
and happier life
We’re MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition...Do it!)
Our vision is a world where
we all live fitter, healthier
and happier lives.
We empower children and adults to become fitter, healthier and happier and to
reach or maintain a healthier weight. MEND offers solutions that people can
use throughout their lives to improve their fitness, health and self-esteem.
We provide the information and support they need to choose healthier foods
and spend more time being active.
Since being founded in 2004, we’ve reached more than 230,000 children with
our school resources, helped more than 60,000 children and adults across the
world with our programmes and trained more than 6,000 front-line staff.

‘MEND-friendly’ way of
Working closely with public,
private, third sector and
academic partners, we:
• are the UK’s leading provider of family healthy lifestyle and weight management
programmes in local communities
• support public sector commissioners in delivering scalable, safe and effective
weight management services
• offer wellness weight management programmes for adults in leisure settings
• provide the knowledge, skills, resources and training for professionals and
organisations to:
• prevent people from becoming unhealthy as a result of inactivity or
poor food choices
• treat people who are above a healthy weight (and therefore more at
risk of developing chronic diseases including cardio-vascular disease,
type 2 diabetes and some cancers)
2011.025
• develop innovative ways to improve public health and encourage healthier
lifestyles, using our extensive research.
MEND’s vision is a world where we all live fitter, healthier and happier lives.

Timeline of our extensive
clinical trials and evidence
Working at the forefront of our field
Our multi-disciplinary team of child and adult weight management experts
includes dietitians, psychologists and physical activity specialists. Plus
we have independent clinical evidence to show that MEND 7-13 helps
children improve their BMI, activity levels, fitness and self-esteem.
We use scientific methods to assess effectiveness
Using randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and other methods, we
compare health improvements of MEND participants against control
groups, and track the short and long-term progress of participants.
Research such as this enables us to continuously improve effectiveness.

We share our work to advance obesity prevention and
treatment
As the largest provider of community-based weight management services
for families in the world, MEND contributes to the wider knowledge and
evidence base around obesity. We disseminate findings in peer-reviewed
journals, regularly present at major international conferences and have
contributed to numerous government guidelines and policies.

We have strong research partnerships
As well as a 20-year partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital and
the UCL Institute of Child Health, we have set up the MEND International
Research Group (MIRG). This independent group allows leading
academics with an interest in obesity to collaborate and form innovative
research partnerships in order to contribute to the field of public health.

Our partners make it possible
Partnership has been absolutely central to our work since day one. Together
with commissioners, corporate partners, funding partners and dedicated delivery
partners, we provide a whole-systems approach to tackling obesity.

What partnership means to us
Working with commissioners and funding partners
Our funding comes from the public sector (we work with the Welsh
Government and many public health commissioners in England),
the private sector (eg Bupa and the Johnson & Johnson Corporate
Citizenship Trust) and the third sector (eg Big Lottery Fund).
Delivery partners in the community
Our programmes are run by local delivery teams from a broad range
of organisations, which are trained and supported by MEND. These
include community provider trusts, councils, leisure centres, children’s
centres, schools, housing associations, private companies (typically
through volunteering initiatives) and local community organisations.
Corporate partners committed to health and wellbeing
“Building relationships
across sectors, disciplines
and communities allows us
to create the widest
impact possible.”
Harry MacMillan,
Chief Executive, MEND
We have developed many mutually beneficial relationships with
businesses that want to focus on their CSR values or improve the
health of their staff. This has included developing programmes for new
audiences, schools resources and corporate volunteering.
We are always open to exploring new ideas with partners to create
exciting initiatives, campaigns or creative ways to change behaviour.
Recent examples include the Diabetes UK Healthy Lifestyles
Roadshow, the Dame Kelly Holmes Legacy Trust athlete mentoring
scheme and working with C3 Collaborating for Health on Bupa’s Global
Challenge to engage 50,000 people in physical activity.

Let’s get together
Corporate partners work with us in many mutually beneficial ways – from
funding development or delivery of programmes and resources to creating and
collaborating on local, regional or national campaigns and initiatives.

What do you want to change?
Health inequalities. Rising obesity. Employee wellbeing
Tackling social issues like these is important as employers – for
your staff, customers and public image. MEND can work with you to
develop a bespoke, mutually beneficial package that fits your CSR
ambitions, wellness or volunteering objectives or broader business
strategy. We have a range of options to help you make a deep and
lasting impact on the few, or a broader, large-scale approach to help
many children, families or adults.
We can work together to roll out MEND programmes in new areas or
develop a new local, regional or national initiative. Some companies
have chosen to support local communities by subsidising family
programmes to run in deprived areas. Others have worked with us to
develop new initiatives to help different groups including new mums
and children under five.
Creating resources collaboratively
Schools PSHE resources funded by
Legal & General
Working with us offers you:
• reports on impact and outcomes
Many corporate partners want to produce something tangible to
benefit schools, families or local communities. MEND can provide
a range of creative options plus content and expert knowledge.
For example, we worked with Britvic Soft Drinks on Graduate Grub
recipe cards, a post-programme resource for children, and insurance
firm Legal & General supported us to develop and pilot an obesity
prevention resource for secondary schools.
• volunteering and staff development
opportunities
Partnering with local organisations
• stronger links with your local
communities
We can help you develop partnerships with councils, local community
and health organisations and national third sector organisations.
For example, we’re working with healthcare company Bupa on the
‘Building Powerful Communities’ project to reach thousands of people
in Tower Hamlets through family programmes, adult self-help tools,
teacher and fitness instructor training and more.
• workplace health advice for employee
wellbeing
• access to thousands of MEND families
• positive PR and media coverage
• support with government relations
• dedicated account management.

Listening to local communities
We’re committed to offering a safe, effective and localised solution. We do
this by continuously monitoring, evaluating and improving our programmes,
listening to feedback and tailoring services to local people who need us most.

Safe, effective and localised
We monitor and evaluate everything we do
Obesity is a complex and constantly evolving area, so it’s critical that
treatment and prevention programmes reflect the latest evidence and
best practice. MEND is dedicated to monitoring and evaluating all
programmes centrally so that local teams can focus on delivery.
Our evaluations inform continuous improvement
We use our findings to keep on improving programmes and ensure
consistently positive health outcomes. For example, since launching in
2001, the MEND 7-13 programme has been upgraded six times.
Programmes are designed to be adaptable to local needs
Diverse appeal
• 26.2% of parents on MEND 7-13 are
unemployed.
• 30.3% of participants on MEND 7-13
are BME families.
• 48.2% of participants on MEND 7-13
live in rented accommodation.
Our community delivery model allows us to tailor programmes to suit
local requirements – such as targeting a key social group or making
adaptations based on religion. We balance this flexibility with ensuring
that changes don’t jeopardise the clinical efficacy of the programmes.
Our partnership development team identifies specific local needs
and challenges to create a tailored offering that will appeal to those
at risk. This could include handouts in a second language or feature
multi-cultural foods, recruitment materials that reflect diversity or SEN
adaptations. We can also offer bespoke extras such as professional
athlete mentors and specialised pre- and post-programme support.
