April 2015 One of my cornerstones for raising student performance is to have high expectations for them. So what does that look like? Does it mean just giving them more to do? No. It means helping them to do their best everyday. So how can you “raise expectations” at home? Research has shown us that having high expectations leads to high accomplishments. When we set high expectations for our children, we must make sure they are rigorous and challenging, yet attainable. So when you set the expectations, remember to follow these steps: Look growth or progress, not perfection. Remember that having a goal helps students to work hard. Even if they do not reach their goal completely, consider their efforts and work towards it. Be sure to celebrate progress and steps often. Encouragement can go a long ways. Be sure to take notice and provide recognition for progress. A special handshake or a phone call to grand parents can make a world of difference. Wednesday April 1, 15 Late Start Friday April 3 NO School (Good Friday) Tuesday, April 7, 14, 21 & 28 Halmstad RCU Tuesday, April 14 Halmstad Culver’s Day Make sure they understand the goal and it is clear. To say, “Your goal is to read 7 books”, is much more defined than saying, “I want you to be a better reader”. Wednesday April 22 Do not be afraid to adjust the goal as they progress. If the goal was set to high, you can make it more reasonable. If the goal was easily attained, make a new one with a steeper expectation. What is Important is that they learn from their mistakes, persevere, and improve; not making the same mistake again. Discuss how to stay positive even after failing and that they can try again. Spring marks the time when schools are mandated to do testing. Your child’s teacher will be notifying you when their class tests. Please help your child do their best by getting enough sleep before the test and a healthy breakfast the morning of the tests. Encourage them to try hard and not give up if the test questions are hard, but to fight through them and be their best! Tell them you are proud of them for working hard for themselves and their school. Go Hawks! If you have not already done so, I highly encourage you to download the Chippewa Falls School District app for your phone. Its free and very customizable to fit your needs. You can set it up to send you alerts, look at lunch menus, and even special events for schools. The best is that it is free. Just go to your app store, search for Chippewa Falls School, select the app and download. Once you have it downloaded, open it up and you will see the features and can set it up to meet your needs. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the office and I will do my best to help you out . APRIL/MAY GAZETTE PAGE 7 COUNSELOR’S Corner DIVERSITY: The world we live in is rapidly changing and becoming more diverse. Each day we meet people who are different than ourselves. They may have skin that is a different color or speak a language that is not familiar to us. Sometimes we think that certain jobs or toys are better for girls or just for boys. We might celebrate holidays that others do not. We might walk or talk or look different. We get along best when we can appreciate the uniqueness in each one of us, when we see all of our abilities, not the “dis.” Guidance lessons in April are all about diversity, respect and tolerance. If your child is in 4th grade and you haven’t had a 4th Grade Planning Conference yet please contact Mrs. Jasper to set one up. Close to 80% of our 4th Grade families have conferenced. Thank you! THERE IS STILL TIME TO BECOME A MENTOR! There are 19 students on our waiting list that would greatly benefit from having a mentor. Mentoring is all about showing the student you care and you are trustworthy by offering support, encouragement, and friendship! Plus, mentoring is fun! Mentors and students can spend their time together playing a board game, building with Legos, putting together a puzzle, doing crafts, or playing sports. Could you find 30 minutes in your week to have fun with a child who will cherish your time and friendship? www.facebook.com/ChippewaMentorProgram Call Ashley at 715-726-2400 ext. 2516 http://cfsd.chipfalls.k12.wi.us/cvMentors.cfm Get started before the end of the year! Exciting news for GOTR in the area, we will soon be changing to Girls on the Run o f the Chippewa Valley. Our chapter was started in 2006 with 8 girls. We currently have sites in 15 schools in the Eau Claire County area, and are now able to expand into Chippewa County. How to apply for site? Follow link on our website: gotreauclaire.org What is GOTR? Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive les-sons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the pro-gram is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime ap-preciation of health and fitness. Girls on the Run is an Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 200 councils across the United States and Canada. We use the power of running to provide girls with the tools to: We use exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls dis-cover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years and beyond. Through in-teractive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, par-ticipants learn how to celebrate being their unique and real selves. Our hope is that every girl believes and can say, "I belong just the way I am." Questions? Email: [email protected]
