April Newsletter - Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District

April 2015
One of my cornerstones for raising student performance is to have high expectations for
them. So what does that look like? Does it mean just giving them more to do? No. It
means helping them to do their best everyday. So how can you “raise expectations” at
home? Research has shown us that having high expectations leads to high accomplishments. When we set high expectations for our children, we must make sure they are rigorous and challenging, yet attainable. So when you set the expectations, remember to follow
these steps:

Look growth or progress, not perfection. Remember that having a goal helps
students to work hard. Even if they do not reach their goal completely, consider
their efforts and work towards it.

Be sure to celebrate progress and steps often. Encouragement can go a long
ways. Be sure to take notice and provide recognition for progress. A special
handshake or a phone call to grand parents can make a world of difference.

Make sure they understand the goal and it is clear. To say, “Your goal is to read 7
books”, is much more defined than saying, “I want you to be a better reader”.


Do not be afraid to adjust the goal as they progress. If the goal was set to high,
you can make it more reasonable. If the goal was easily attained, make a new
one with a steeper expectation.

Halmstad Mentor Breakfast
8-9 am
Help your child learn from mistakes and that everyone makes them. What is
Important is that they learn from their mistakes, persevere, and improve; not
making the same mistake again. Discuss how to stay positive even after failing
and that they can try again.
Spring marks the time when schools are mandated to do testing. Your child’s teacher will
be notifying you when their class tests. Please help your child do their best by getting
enough sleep before the test and a healthy breakfast the morning of the tests. Encourage
them to try hard and not give up if the test questions are hard, but to fight through them and
be their best! Tell them you are proud of them for working hard for themselves and their
school. Go Hawks!
If you have not already done so, I highly encourage you to download the Chippewa Falls
School District app for your phone. Its free and very customizable to fit your needs. You
can set it up to send you alerts, look at lunch menus, and even special events for
schools. The best is that it is free. Just go to your app store, search for Chippewa Falls
School, select the app and download. Once you have it downloaded, open it up and you
will see the features and can set it up to meet your needs. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me at the office and I will do my best to help you out .

About Saving!”
Teaching your student to navigate the jungle of personal
finance at an early age is our goal at Halmstad RCU School
$ense. April is National Credit Union Youth Month, and
every student will have the opportunity to participate in
our “Wild About SavingTM” coloring activity! Our savers
will also be excited for double stamps with each deposit
on Tuesday, April 14. We culminate the month with a random drawing for jungle themed prizes for anyone who
saves at school during the last full week of April! Help
your child remember to bring their RCU School $ense deposit each Tuesday because every deposit is an investment
in your child’s future and a benefit to your school!
If you have any questions about RCU School $ense, feel
free to contact Ali Peterson, Halmstad’s Financial Education Representative, at [email protected]; or visit

SEVERE WEATHER DRILLS
The Chippewa Falls School District is very concerned about the safety of all students. Fire drills, severe weather drills
and all school lockdowns are practiced at various times.
It is helpful when parents talk to their children about these safety routines. Please assure your child that if he/she
takes these practices seriously, we can maintain the safety of each person in the building.

COUNSELOR’S Corner
DIVERSITY: The world we live in is rapidly changing and becoming
more diverse. Each day we meet people who are different than ourselves. They may have skin that is a different color or speak a language that is not familiar to us. Sometimes we think that certain jobs
or toys are better for girls or just for boys. We might celebrate holidays that others do not. We might walk or talk or look different. We
get along best when we can appreciate the uniqueness in each one of
us, when we see all of our abilities, not the “dis.”
Guidance lessons in April are all about diversity, respect and tolerance.
If your child is in 4th grade and you haven’t had a 4th Grade Planning Conference yet please
contact Mrs. Jasper to set one up. Close to 80% of our 4th Grade families have conferenced.
Thank you!
THERE IS STILL TIME TO BECOME A MENTOR!
There are 19 students on our waiting list that would greatly benefit from having a mentor. Mentoring is all
about showing the student you care and you are trustworthy by offering support, encouragement, and
friendship! Plus, mentoring is fun! Mentors and students can spend their time together playing a board
game, building with Legos, putting together a puzzle, doing crafts, or playing sports.
Could you find 30 minutes in your week to have fun with a child who will cherish your time and friendship?

Kindergarten
The kindergarteners just finished their concert and they did a wonderful job! We are continuing to focus
on matching pitch and steady beat. Our new focus is going to be learning the difference between steady
beat and the rhythm of the words.
1st Grade
The 1st graders just put on a fantastic concert. Way to go 1st graders! Now we are going to work on writing
our rhythms ta and ta-di. We are also going to be learning about a new solfege tone; it is going to be one
step higher than the tone so.
2nd Grade
The 2nd graders are putting more focus on the solfege tone do. We have been practicing performing it on
our mallet instruments. We are also using our song “Apple Tree” to help us work with that new tone.
Soon we will be learning about the use of bar lines to help separate rhythmic patterns.
3rd Grade
The 3rd graders are working more with the pentatonic scale. The story Caps for Sale is helping us practice performing pentatonic music on our mallet instruments. Soon we will figure out the solfege tones of
the song “Chicken On a Fencepost” to help us combine the pentatonic scale with our rhythm ta-ka-di-mi.
4th Grade
The 4th graders are beginning to focus on concert preparation. The concert will be on May 14th at 5:30.
Part of concert preparation is learning a new recorder song we will perform at the concert. Practicing Recorder Karate at home will help students be prepared for that song.
5th Grade
The 5th graders have a concert coming up on May 14th at 6:30. We are beginning to make that our focus
in class. Singing, using mallet instruments, playing recorder, and dancing will all be a part of our concert.
The students are working hard to prepare a wonderful performance.
Attention Halmstad Families!
Please mark your calendars for the following music concerts:
4th Grade - Thursday May 14th @ 5:30 PM
5th Grade - Thursday May 14th @ 6:30 PM
**Please note the adjusted times!!!**

Exciting news for GOTR in the area, we will soon be changing to Girls on the Run o f the Chippewa Valley. Our chapter was started in 2006 with 8 girls. We currently have sites in 15 schools in the Eau Claire
County area, and are now able to expand into Chippewa County.
How to apply for site?
Follow link on our website: gotreauclaire.org
What is GOTR?
Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for
girls in 3rd-5th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive les-sons and running games. The
program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory
5k running event. The goal of the pro-gram is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime ap-preciation of health and fitness.
Girls on the Run is an Independent Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of
over 200 councils across the United States and Canada.
We use the power of running to provide girls with the tools to:
We use exercise, positive reinforcement, and encouraging role models to help girls dis-cover the confidence they need in those critical pre-teen years and beyond. Through in-teractive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, par-ticipants learn how to celebrate being their
unique and real selves. Our hope is that every girl believes and can say, "I belong just the way I am."
