Technology Entrepreneurship Competition
Canada-Korea Conference 2015
Do you have your own startup idea, but need micro-seed capital? Apply to participate in the
Canada-Korea Technology Entrepreneurship Competition (Canada-Korea TEC or CKTEC)!
Selected finalists will be invited to the Canada-Korea Conference (CKC) to compete for a trip
to Korea to do Investor Pitches to Korean VCs and more. Network with venture capitalists,
seasoned entrepreneurs, and representatives of government agencies from both Canada and
Korea, and receive mentorship and guidance on building a successful venture.
The CKTEC is a three-day program within the 5th CKC, organized by The Association of
Korean-Canadian Scientists and Engineers (AKCSE) in partnership with Internation Network
of Korean Entreprenures (INKE). The program aims to promote technological
entrepreneurship in Canada and South Korea by hosting a competition of technology-basedventure ideas, in collaboration with novice and experienced entrepreneurs, investors,
representatives of venture-assisting government agencies and non-government organizations
from both countries.
The CKTEC program will be held at the The Delta Lodge at Kananaskis ( 1 Centennial
Drive Kananaskis Village, Alberta T0L 2H0 Canada) from July 26th to 28th, 2015.

The Association of Korean-Canadian Scientists and Engineers
AKCSE is a Canadian non-profit organization founded in 1986 to serve as a cooperative
bridge between Canada and South Korea in the fields of Science and Technology. AKCSE is
one of the 17 overseas organizations funded by the Ministry of Science of Korea. AKCSE
constantly reaches out to the academic communities within Canada to generate opportunities
for Canadian scientists and engineers to collaborate with their respective counterparts in
South Korea.
AKCSE has local chapters in many provinces of Canada and also at major universities across
the country. The organization has over 3000 members from academia and the industry,
including over 500 student members.

representatives of various venture-related non-profit organizations from Canada and

technological innovation trends in the Canadian and South Korean markets
Prizes and Resources
A TRIP to KOREA to do Investor Pitches will be awarded to the winning individual or team
with a successful business plan. Additionally, the CKTEC will provide finalists (the individuals
and teams who will pass the first screening phase and attend the CKC) with an opportunity to
enjoy the following benefits:
● Receive valuable feedback on your business model from a panel of outstanding judges,
including experienced entrepreneurs and venture capitalists
● Meet fellow Korean-Canadian entrepreneurs, investors, and potential business
partners through networking sessions
● Improve your knowledge on venture development process through invited
presentations by renowned speakers
Eligibility for Making an Entry
To be eligible to make an entry to the CKTEC, prospective competitors 1) must possess the
Korean-ethnic background (at least one member per team) and 2) must have less than three
years of experience in being an entrepreneur.

Step 1 - Application: Teams must submit business plan slides (see Presentation
Requirements for format) to [email protected] by Sunday, June 21, 2015 to make
an entry for Round 1.
Step 2 - Round 1: Applicants will be notified of round 1 judging by Sunday, June 29,
2015 (tentative). Only winners of round 1 will be invited to the final round.
Step 3 - Registration: Winners of Round 1 must register for the Canada-Korea
Conference on Science, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CKC in short) to
participate in the final round. The registration fee is $300 for AKCSE regular members,
$50 for student members and $600 for non-members before July 1, 2014; after July 1
2014, the fee increases to $450 for regular members, $75 for student members and
$900 for non-members.
Step 4 - Final round: Winners of Round 1 who are registered in the CKC will pitch
their business plan on the first day of the CKC, Sunday, July 26, 2015.
Presentation Requirements

For the first round:
○ Up to 12 presentation slides using the Presentation Template & Slide Headings
above (Acceptable formats: ppt, pptx, pdf)
○ Using bullet points instead of paragraphs strongly encouraged
○ Minimum font size = 20pt
○ A suggested presentation template is available for download (attached)

For the final round:
○ 10-minute presentation followed by a 5-min Q&A session
○ A print-out of Appendices providing details of your business plan

1. What is CKTEC?
○ As the name implies, CKTEC is an entrepreneurship competition for Korean
Canadians, hosted by The Association of Korean-Canadian Scientists and
Engineers (AKCSE), a non-profit, cultural organization in partnerhsip with INKE.
In this competition, participants will pitch their business plans for starting up a
new business enterprise to win a trip to Korea to do Investor Pitches. In addition
to the cash prize, the event will also provide various benefits such as
opportunities to network with investors, seasoned entrepreneurs and mentors
and also receive education on new venture construction process.
2. What is the winning prize?
○ A trip to Korea to do Investor Pitches to Korean VCs to the winning individual or team.
3. Is there any restriction on the category of business ideas that participants can

use to compete?
○ Since one of AKCSE’s organizational objectives is to promote the application of
science and technology, we require all participants’ business ideas to
incorporate use of scientific research or existing/new technologies. If you have
any question regarding the eligibility of your idea, please feel free to email us:

4. I do not have the Korean ethnicity. Can I still enter the competition?
○ We require every team to have at least one member with Korean ethnicity. If
you do not have a Korean-Canadian member in your team, you will not be
eligible for this competition.
5. I did not pass the first round. Can I still attend the CKC 2015 and some of the
workshops and seminars in the entrepreneurship track?
○ Yes, you can. Please register for the conference as an attendee. Note that this
may require prospective participants to submit an abstract of an academic or
professional project. Please refer to the CKC website for more details (http://
ckc.akcse.org/ckc2015/).
6. I am unable to attend all three days of CKC due to a time conflict. Can I miss
some days of the conference and still participate in the CKTEC?
○ Unfortunately, no. We require all finalists to actively participate in the entire
course of the conference.
