CALL FOR PAPERS 2015 HEARTLAND GRADUATE WORKSHOP IN ANCIENT STUDIES “Agonism, Competition, and Rivalry in the Ancient World” Featuring Keynote Addresses by: Dr. Joel Christensen (University of Texas at San Antonio) Dr. Catherine Keane (Washington University in St. Louis) The Heartland Graduate Workshops in Ancient Studies series aims to bring together diverse scholars with a broad range of interests for two days of collaboration and mutual encouragement. This year we will be examining the opposite mode of behavior, seeking to understand better the various roles that opposition and antagonism played in the ancient world. Did friendly rivalries bolster the participants and enable them all to reach new heights? Did stark antipathy lead to the success of one contender to the detriment of the others? The workshop will take place on September 11-12 on and around the campus of the University of Missouri – Columbia. We invite submissions by graduate students from participating institutions on topics related to agonism, competition, and rivalry in the history, literature, art, architecture religion, philosophy, and politics in the ancient Mediterranean world. Possible topics include but are not limited to: • Literary and generic supremacy • Rhetoric and legal proceedings • Athletic and/or non-athletic games • Military alliances and/or conflicts • Political alliances and/or contestations • Socio-economics and class struggle • Commemoration of deeds and ancestors • Building programs • Philosophical debate Please send an abstract of no more than 500 words to [email protected] by May 1st. Abstracts must not include any indication of the author’s identity or home institution since they will be blind reviewed by a selection committee. We hope to notify all applicants of their acceptance status in June.
