March 2015 - Clovelly Surf Lifesaving Club

AROUND
Jimmy Wells
All member’s thoughts are with Jimmy up there near the
Queensland border. He is facing a tough medical battle at the
moment. Some days are good, some not so good. Son Stuart is
with Jim regularly and has passed on the thoughts and wishes
of all Clovelly members. Jim is a Life Member and was President of the club on multiple occasions. If the club needed him
Jimmy was unwaveringly there.
Madeleine Wheatley
“Miss Modest” even tried to keep quiet her
trip to NZ on the weekend of 5-7th March.
Madeleine was selected by Surf Lifesaving
NSW to represent the association in a patrol
exchange program - couldn’t have chosen a
better rep! Congratulations Madeleine.
Randwick District Initiative
In a welcome move, the Presidents of the 4
Randwick clubs have agreed to equally fund competition
coaching for members. Coaches will be appointed for a range
of surf carnival disciplines. Members from Clovelly, Coogee,
Maroubra & South Maroubra will train together. The program
will also be available to older Nipper Age Groups. Great idea
which can only improve skills and competitiveness across the
Randwick board,
SLSNSW Guardians of the Surf Fundraising
We all see the sale of raffle tickets outside
shopping centres and the new campaign
asking the public “to become a surf lifesaver” by donating. This is not just a front
to raise money for administration. Every
surf club in NSW receives an equal allocation from these campaigns. In 2014 we
received nearly $8k each, a 26% increase
from the previous year. Thank you
SLSNSW.
Ladies Fitness Group
March 7th was International Women’s Day and rightly so.
Every Monday night at 6pm long time member Deb Reynolds
runs a ladies only fitness class in the gym from 6-7pm. Male
members must respect this small window that management fully supports.
It allows the ladies to get together and
suffer under the iron hand of Deb.
Please respect that the gym is ladies
only at this time. Don’t be asked to
leave-just arrange your schedule to fit
in!!!!
Ronnie Waters
Ron was Clovelly through and
through. Ron passed away on 21st February. Ron was a great
swimmer, made many meritorious recues off Clovelly in the
days of belt & reel and was a founding member of the Eskimos
in 1954. Ron’s life was celebrated at his funeral at Botany Crematorium and then later upstairs at the club. Son-in-law Al
Pausey presented a reflective and comprehensive eulogy that
really drew a great picture of Ron’s life. All member’s
thoughts are with Norma, Jo & Al and all the family.
Clovelly Surf Club Sports Lunch
This annual fundraiser for your club is as always on the 2nd
Friday in May - that’s the 8th of May this year. Thankyou to
the Clovelly Hotel for again providing the venue and supporting this always rollicking event. Tickets will be $100 per head
and will be available soon. See Boof or Russ Byrne for more
details or to book a table.
YOUR CLUB
“CAN YOU HEAR ME?”
Club Captain Gerry McGillion reports The patrol season is still with us and big seas early in March
saw numerous rescues and some serious first aid cases. In
heavy seas, the stairs are always dangerous and patrollers
need to be on hand. The 2 new Yamaha motors for the IRBs
are a welcome addition to our lifesaving resources. Thankyou to Andrew & Gordon for all
their work with the IRBs. We remain on duty
until Monday 27th April at the conclusion of
the Anzac Day long weekend.
“did you understand me....?”
The Chisholms Really Are Bunnies!
Terry shared a piece of family history with OTS the other day.
To quote the Sydney Morning Herald March 13th 1901 - “The
South Sydney Football Club , affiliated to the Metropolitan
Rugby Union engaged in 3 competitions. The Captain of the A
team Mr. Archibold Chisholm has been selected to represent
NSW against QLD. The club presented him with a handsome
travelling rug in recognition of this honour. This is Mr. Chisholm’s 1st Inter-Colonial Cap! “ This Rugby Club changed to
league in 1908 and the rabbit plague began - travel rugs were
just not good enough for them !!!!
Septogenarians
Age has not wearied them! Pictured in early March, proudly
serving their community are Eddie Emerson, Ken Stone &
John McNamee. They do not just actively patrol, they continue to contribute to the club wherever they can. Ken of
course, runs the Giles at Clovelly fitness classes in the club
hall every weekday & is always on a board on Sunday mornings doing water safety for the Nippers. John is a world &
national beach sprint and flags champion, squad trainer and
will compete in a range of events at this month’s State Masters
up at Umina. Eddie is a font of wisdom, be it golf or life.
Thanks guys for being there for all of us.

MARCH 2015
TOM CADDY CUP
This celebrations of the life of Tom
Caddy was held on Sunday 22nd February. Teams from the Surf Club, Eskimos, Nippers, Clovelly Surf Club Swim
Club, Nipper Parents & City Tatts
Cheetahs Swim club entered teams for
the 10 x 33 yards relay.
The Bay was abuzz as the first swimmers dived into a bumpy high tide. The
lead chopped and changed and with
teams being lapped and swimmers everywhere, there was a degree of confusion. Eventually the cup went to the
Eskimos over the Surf Club with a protest lodged by the Nipper Parent team.
Controversy aside, everybody was a
winner, as we paid tribute to the many
contributions of a true Clovelly legend.

CLUB MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP
This unique and traditional Clovelly event was held before the
Tom Caddy Cup. A field of 20 took on the challenge of the runswim-run-swim-run around the Bay. Starting and finishing on
the beach near the water mark an enthralling race unfolded between Andrew Goodieson and Latham James. The final
Championship result was Andrew 1st, Latham 2nd & Eamon
Anderson 3rd. The Female championship was taken out by
Bernadette Chisholm. How fit and strong do they look ?
Clovelly History
A young member asked OTS
the other day, “why do you old
guys call those second last
steps on this side the
“springboard steps””? Does
this photo answer that ? Yes,
it is real, and it was there in
another time at this place!
State Masters Umina
Breaking news saw some great medal
winning performances on Wednesday
11th March. John McNamee took gold
in both the flags & beach sprint. John
also competed in the tube rescue. Bernadette Chisholm (pictured) was 2nd in
her 2k beach run. Our girls beach relay
team bronzed as did Jo Emery in her
individual sprint. Congratulations on
doing much more than just showing the
cap. Full report in next edition.
