NEWS FROM AROUND THE GREENS

NEWS FROM AROUND THE GREENS
Our club championships have been progressing along
for both men and women with several of our events
now down to the pointy end.
The next ladies tournament will be the 2 Bowl Triples
event which will be held on Monday 11th May, get
your entries in now!
In the ladies triples final we have Yvonne Lovelock’s
team of Charlie Harkness and Pam Rowe to play Deryl
Hardy’s team of Gail George and Audrey Wheeler. Rain
hampered the original play date, so this final will now
be played on Thursday 7th May at 9am.
On the Junior scene, our Hawks Academy member
Shane White recently compete in the Queensland
Junior State Championships in Bundaberg. Shane had a
fantastic week and finished the event just going down
in the U15 boys singles and bringing home a silver
medal. Congratulations Shorty.
The men’s pairs final will be decided between
Cameron Wilson and Jim Merrick who take on Warren
Nugent and Colin Saltmarsh. At time of print a date
has yet to be set for this final, however keep your eyes
out on the notice board for this one.
In the men’s singles final we have Brett Wilkie taking
on Rohan Wilson, with this top match scheduled for
Saturday 2nd May at 10.30am.
There’s sure to be some great matches in these club
finals, so come along and watch some fantastic bowls.
Good luck to all competitors and all the best to the
winners in the Champion of Champion Rounds.
The ladies Gold Coast District Singles was held on the
27th—29th May with many of our ladies taking part.
Margaret Pickering did extremely well making it
through to the semi final before she eventually went
down 25-15 in a tough battle with Tweed Head’s
Wendy Wilson, who went on to win the 2015 title.

Our ladies held their annual 6 A Side tournament on
the 13th April and it was a great success. A thoroughly
enjoyable day was had by all with the winners being
the Tweed Heads team of S Hanlon, C Hawkins, R
Griffin, A Ebsworth, V Young, and D Cunnington with 8
+39 (on a count back with 42 ends). Runners-up on the
day were the Burleigh contingent of M Holmes, C
Maslon, M De Jongh, G McGaverston, D Dorrington,
and J Matthews with 8 +39 (with 40 ends). Well done
to our ladies that organised and ran the day and all
those that competed and made it another fantastic
event.
We also had another junior inducted in to our Hawks
Junior Academy—Tahlia Camilleri is our newest recruit.
Tahlia was introduced to bowls through the Helensvale
High bowls program we ran last year. She has been a
regular attendance on Saturday mornings where she
has been working with our Junior Coordinator Yowie.
We welcome Tahlia to the club, and look forward to
watching her progress.
Helensvale State High School are back again with their
Year 8 classes to enjoy another term learning about
the game of bowls with eight classes taking to the
greens over eight weeks. Thanks to my volunteers for
your assistance in helping these kids learn the basics of
bowls. Hopefully this will be a great introduction for
them to learn about our great game and club.
The Australian Sides Championships were held in
Perth, WA, on the 9th—12th April with nine of our
Club Helensvale representatives included in the
maroon line-ups. The women’s team was successful in
bringing home a silver medal from the event, while the
men’s team finished in 3rd place behind NSW and SA.
Two of our Hawks were awarded with the Queensland
Players of the Series medals—Pam Rowe and Nathan
Rice enjoying a fantastic few days on the rain soaked
greens at Yokine. Sadly, at the end of the event three
players retired from state representative duties.
Former Hawks player, Darren Mullens, and two of our
current stars—Anthony Kiepe and Anthony Fantini.

faults such as those inferred above, some times even to their
own disadvantage.

You and your opponent have to agree on the result. You do not
have to accept his/her word.. You must be sure about it before
you concede any shot.
Do not signal a result to your skip before you and your
opponent have agreed on the result. Impulsive signalling can
cost your team shots.
If a bowl may fall to your advantage you may claim a wait
period of 30 seconds from the time the last bowl of the end
played comes to rest. If the 30 period is claimed, you all wait 30
seconds then declare the result on the position of the head at
the end of that period.
If a bowl may fall to your disadvantage, you may6 secure it
immediately the last bowl of the end played comes to rest, or,
if your opponent has claimed the 30 second wait, immediately
the 30 seconds have elapsed.
When your opponent has the shot, concede his counters on by
one and remove them from the head. Place all such bowls on a
cloth or a group until the final result is agreed. After you have
conceded all you are prepared to conceded suggest to your
opponent that if he/she wants any more he/she should get
down and measure.
When you have the shot, never move any of your bowls as a
counter BEFORE your opponent has conceded that it is a
counter.
When your opponent is using a measure:
a) Ensure that he/she measures to your closest bowl
b) Watch to ensure that he/she measures right up to the jack
c) Watch to ensure that he/she measures to the closest
point of each bowl, that is along the direct line from the jack
towards the centre of the bowl
d) Watch what his/her thumb and fingers may be doing to the
outstretched tape
e) If you are not totally satisfied with your opponents
conclusion get your won measure out and check for yourself.
9.
After you have agreed on the results, in singles
tell the marker, in team games signal your skip
and in fours also tell the second.
If you cannot agree on a result then call the
umpire to adjudicate. Remember, you do not
have to agree to call the umpire, either player
can call an umpire.

We have reached an exciting part
of the bowls year with several
finals for the club championships
happening this month. Sure to be
great fun for the competitors and
spectators alike. Good luck to
everyone, may you play well and
have a great time.
Tropical Cyclone Pam was one of
the worst natural disasters
Vanuatu has ever experienced,
Graham Brittain
with widespread devastation,
injuries and lives lost. Here at Club Helensvale we felt the
effects of this tragedy strongly as the family of our staff
member, Evelyn Pearson, lost everything. Amy Odell, our
Gaming Manager travelled with Evelyn to her home village
on Tanna Island to provide assistance and took the
opportunity to present the family with $2500 donated from
our Board of Directors and staff members. The donation will
be used to replace the demolished family home and assist
the village to rebuild. It was our pleasure to be of some
small assistance and we hope that the people of Vanuatu
recover from this disaster quickly.
everything she does. Why not bring her to the club? There
will be great dining specials available at the bistro and live
entertainment in the afternoon.
Have you entered our Lucky Fortunes promotion yet? I’m
excited for the major draw on Sunday 31st of this month, it
shall be an exciting event to watch and all finalists will walk
away with cash prizes and one lucky person will win
$10,000!
We have some great new specials at the blu bistro. Monday
night is Barra Mondays, a grilled piece of barramundi with
lemon butter sauce, chips and salad for only $10. Tuesday is
$10 schnitzel night, Wednesday is $15 rib night and the ever
popular $10 rump on Thursdays has got even better with $5
prawn toppers.
Wednesday nights are going to be my new favourite night of
the week. As well as the new $15 slow cooked smokey BBQ
ribs, we also have the new Hot Seat Gaming Promotion.
Every five minutes there will be the chance to win $50 in
our gaming room from 8pm. Will you find yourself in the hot
seat?
I hope to see you around the Club this month.
Don’t forget this Mother’s Day on Sunday 10th is a great
chance to spoil your Mum and say thank you for
