Mohair is an exotic, luscious fiber. Spun from the hair of an angora goat, it’s
lightweight and warm, lustrous and soft. It can be blended with other fibers, spun
into loops, or handpainted. Because of its hair, it can be a challenge to weavers.
During this workshop, students will design a scarf or shawl, learn tricks for
winding warps and weaving to avoid stickiness, and begin (plus possibly finish)
their project. Special techniques of weaving slits, weaving with beads and
supplementary wefts will be demonstrated. After the scarf or shawl comes off the
loom, the finishing aspects of washing and brushing will be shown.
BEGINNING 4 SHAFT OR RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING EXPERIENCE
REQUIRED. USE OF A PORTABLE LOOM REQUIRED.
If you have always wanted to understand weave structure so that you could
design structures yourself instead of having to “shop” in books and magazines for
a draft, this is the class for you, a workshop focusing on the structure of woven
fabrics. All you need to know in advance is how to read and use a weaving draft.
Participants receive a thorough grounding in drafting that takes them far beyond
the basics. We explore many kinds of drafts: structural, pattern-only, profile and
industrial drafts.
Using this information we work through various weave structures to get to the
heart of the issue: how to translate your idea about structure, drape and hand into
a draft.
Marilyn Murphy is author of the new book, Woven to Wear (Interweave Press,
2013). She has written many articles for Handwoven, Knits and Spin Off, as well
as writing a weekly blog for her company, ClothRoads, a global textile artisan
marketplace. She is the former president of Interweave, former owner of the
Weaving Workshop in Chicago and founder of the Textile Arts Centre.
Although structure is the topic, there are plenty of references to the way that color
may be used in a weave structure, discussion of yarn styles as they apply to the
structure being considered and lots of practical tips from a full-time weaver/
designer. Our work is directly related to woven cloth by the handwoven fabrics I
bring with me.

Sharon Alderman is a handweaver, artist, teacher, writer and author. She is the
author of Handwoven, Tailormade, A Handweaver’s Notebook, and Mastering
Weave Structures and over 130 magazine articles on weaving and design topics.
She has been teaching weaving classes across the country since 1976. “I weave
beautiful cloth that functions as it is asked to do. Color is my passion, as is
teaching and sharing my weaving experience.”
Judith Mackenzie has been a textile artist for the last 30 years. She has taught all
over the United States and Canada. Her adventures in fiber include repairing the
King of Afghanistan’s carpet, leading tours in Turkey, raising sheep and
managing a buffalo ranch. Her depth of knowledge is incredible.
Because Judith, Marilyn and Sharon are visiting instructors our rules on class sign
up will be different. To register in the class we must have full payment at the
time of registration. If for some reason you cannot take the class after signing up,
a refund will be made only if we can fill your space. We have made a
commitment to these instructors and are liable for costs.

seaming, many knitters prefer to knit sweaters from the top-down. Following the

This is a traditional Bavarian knitting technique in which stitches twist and travel

Spider Woman taught the Navajo women to spin with a spindle made of lightning
and turquoise. While we can't provide that kind of equipment, we can continue
the tradition. Wool, greasy, clean and commercially processed is our fiber. The
last class is an all day natural dye workshop. Women who are pregnant should
take the dye class at a later time when they are not pregnant.

In this two day workshop students will warp and weave tapestries using plain and

PLY-SPLIT A CHEVRON AND BASKET WEAVE BRAID

Ply-splitting, a technique from Northern India, is completely portable. Peter
Collingwood and Linda Hendrickson helped introduce this slow and meditative
technique to the US. We will learn two braids using SCOT (Single-course
Oblique Twining), prepared cords and a gripfid-a handy tool.

Kumihimo, the ancient and honored craft of Japanese braiding, a tradition going
back to the Middle Ages, is enjoying a revival of interest. Braids are fascinating
and beautiful alone. They can also be useful as an embellishment for handwovens
or jewelry. We will construct a simple braiding stool and experiment with round,
flat and square braids. A Kumihimo computer program will be available for those
who wish to try it.

If your toes are cold, this class is for you. There is nothing warmer than felt and
it’s great for slippers or after ski boots. You will use dyed wool fleece to make

A TASTE OF JAPANESE BRAIDING ON A DISK

Kumihimo on a disk is so portable, and it is a wonderful way to create colorful
braids to embellish projects. We’ll set up for an 8-strand braid and try several

CLASS REGISTRATION POLICIES
Many of our classes fill up quickly. To guarantee a space, you should pre-register AT LEAST ONE WEEK PRIOR TO the
beginning of the class. To register for a class, we require a deposit of ½ of the cost of the class. The remainder of the fee is due the day of
the first class. We consider your enrollment a commitment to take the class. We order supplies and make a commitment to the instructor
based on your registration.
Please be sure you can attend the first session before you sign up for a class. The first class session provides the foundation of
skills for the entire class.
If you cancel a week or more before the beginning date of the class, all monies will be refunded. IF YOU CANCEL WITH LESS
THAN A WEEK'S NOTICE, YOUR REGISTRATION DEPOSIT WILL BE FORFEITED. The cost of the class is neither refundable nor
transferable once the class has begun. A full refund of all monies will be made if Shuttles, Spindles and Skeins cancels a class.
