Welcome!
!
Letter from the 2014 Co-Chairs
Thank you for joining us for the 20th Annual Public Service Auction at New York
University School of Law. On behalf of the over 400 students who will benefit from your
support tonight, we welcome you to Vanderbilt Hall for what promises to be a memorable
evening.
Twenty years ago, a group of NYU Law students set out to organize a student-run auction
that would fund public service summer internships. The 1994 auction was a smashing
success, and, since then, the Public Service Auction has become one of our school’s most
beloved traditions. The Auction is instrumental to NYU Law’s commitment to providing
guaranteed funding to any law student who interns for a nonprofit or government
organization during their 1L or 2L summer. Last year, the Auction raised over $75,000 to
provide grants to NYU Law students volunteering in public interest positions across the
globe. We hope to do even better this year, thanks to your generous support.
NYU's determination to support every student who pursues the public good doesn’t just
create amazing opportunities for students. It also makes a vital contribution to our local
and global communities. Each summer, NYU students work in fascinating and important
fields—from children's advocacy to environmental protection to providing services to lowincome families. The theme of this year’s auction is 20 Years of Service. In honor of
that theme, you'll notice stories and pictures from past summer internships displayed
throughout Greenberg Lounge, Kushner Lounge, and the Tishman Atrium.
The Auction is the result of significant generosity on the part of businesses, law firms,
faculty, and alumni, the ingenuity of student committee members and volunteers, and the
dedication and support of the entire law school community. It simply could not happen
without the support of so many, and we are truly grateful to everyone who made a
contribution, whether large or small. Thank you, everyone, for all of your hard work and
generosity.
Tonight is also a chance for the entire law school community—students, faculty, staff,
alumni, family, and friends—to share the evening and enjoy the time together. At NYU, we
are a "private university in the public service,” and we will celebrate it tonight.
Peruse the alumni, student, and faculty donations that make our auction unique and fresh
every year. Hear performances from NYU Law’s a cappella group Substantial Performance
and student-founded band Champagne Friday. Join in the excitement of the live auction,
with a fabulous team of auctioneers – Dean Trevor Morrison, Professor Cynthia Estlund,
and Professor Samuel Issacharoff. Most of all, enjoy the evening!
Thank you so m uch for com ing. Happy Bidding!

Bidding Instructions
Generally
In order to bid, you must register online at: https://apps.law.nyu.edu/pilcauction/. This will provide you
with a bidder number. This can be done before the auction, or if you have not registered online prior to
the auction, you may fill out the above online form at the registration tables in front of Kushner Lounge
(next to the grand staircase in the Vanderbilt Hall entrance).
Silent Auction
When bidding on an item, please write your name, bidder number, and the amount of your bid in the
appropriate increment on the bid sheet associated with the item. You must have a bidder number for
your bid to be considered valid.
For certain items, if you would like to guarantee that you win an item, you can use the Guaranteed BuyOut Option. At the bottom of certain bid sheets is a line labeled “guaranteed buy-out.” The guaranteed
buy-out price may be more than the value of the item, but if you choose to use this option, you are
guaranteed to win that special item you’ve got your eye on. (This also means that if the guaranteed
buy-out line is already filled out, the bidding on that item is closed.) And remember, every penny that
you spend goes to support NYU students doing important work through their public interest summer
internships!
When the announcement is made at 9:30 P.M. that the silent auction has closed, the highest bid at that
time will be the winning bid. Winners will be notified by e-mail.
Live Auction
If you wish to place a bid, please raise your card so that the auctioneer can read your bidder number.
Please keep your card up until the auctioneer recognizes you. If you are the highest bidder for an item,
an auction representative will approach you to confirm your bid. If you prefer to pay for live auction
items by cash or check, please be prepared to do so at that time.
50/50 Raffle
Win up to $25,000! Raffle tickets cost $100 and up to 500 tickets will be sold, both prior to the auction
and at the auction. Half the pot goes to the auction and the other half goes to the winner. Details TBA.
Redemption of Won Items
All winners will be notified via email as to pick-up instructions in the days following the auction. Please
note: All auction gift certificate expire on March 1, 2015, unless otherwise noted. All items or
certificates not picked up from an auction representative by April 1, 2014, will be considered forfeited.
Individuals will still be charged for forfeited items. If you have any questions, please email the auction
chairs at [email protected].
Mystery Boxes
Want to take home a prize on the spot? Buy a Mystery Box and get a gift package worth at least $50!
Each Mystery Box is full of fun and unique items, and while the contents of each mystery box are a
surprise until you buy it, you can chose from four fun themes: House Party, Going Out, Shopping Spree,

Dining Out
DO-001
Dinner for Two – Carbone (Greenwich Village)
A gift certificate for dinner for 2 with house-selected wine at one of New York’s
best restaurants. In the words of a gushing NY Times review: “It is a fancy redsauce joint in Greenwich Village as directed by Quentin Tarantino, bringing back
the punch-in-the-guts thrills of a genre that everybody else sees as uncultured and
a little embarrassing, while exposing the sophistication that was always lurking
there. Carbone has a technical prowess that can make you giddy; a lust for excess
that can, at times, make you a little queasy; and an instinct for sheer
entertainment that makes a lot of other restaurants seem like earnest,
unimaginative drones.”
DO-002
