Program:
Diane Copeland will play the piano
for a singalong.
Diane was born into a musical
family, raised in Spokane Valley
and studied music at Eastern
Washington University. After
performing with numerous show
groups in Hawaii and along
the West Coast, she continued
her career as a solo pianist/
vocalist based in Los Angeles and
performing on cruise ships, in
hotels and music venues in various
parts of the world.
Diane moved back to Spokane
in 1993 and continues to play
and sing throughout the Inland
Northwest…..and still loves it.
“Forty years of making music as a
profession has been an incredible
journey for which I will always be
grateful. Music is such a universal
language, and I’m proud to speak
it.”

Mark your
January Calendar!
For our January 7, 2014 meeting,
Compass Club members and their
spouses & friends are invited
to the home of James Glover,
the “Father of Spokane.” His
house on Spokane’s South Hill
was one of the first designed by
Kirtland Kelsey Cutter, the most
prominent of many excellent
architects in town at the time.
The home was built in 1888
at 321 West Eighth Avenue
in an English Tudor design
with Shingle Style influence, a
common characteristic of east
coast homes of the time. We will
enter the house under the massive
Richardsonian archway of the
front porch, through heavy wood
double doors into a room with a
fireplace and wood paneling. The
windows on either side of the
door have deep sills that serve as
seats for early arriving guests.

as the evening progresses.
James Nettleton Glover arrived in the summer of 1873 and bought 160 acres in what is now downtown
Spokane. He established the first sawmill here. In the 1880’s the Great Northern Railroad extended its line to
Spokane, bringing with it a boon to the region’s growth. This made it mandatory that the town be surveyed.
Glover undertook this, naming all of the streets of the downtown area, and those names survive to this day.
He then gave away land to anyone who would agree to set up a business within the community, hoping his
dreams and faith in Spokane’s future would become a reality.
Joining us for this special evening will be The Spokane Youth String Quartet. These young musicians are
members of the Spokane Youth Symphony and are 14 and 15 years old. Their music will be the perfect
accompaniment to our evening in this very special Spokane home.

Auction Results
Our monthly meetings are the second Thursday of
each month. We begin our discussions at 10 AM at
selected homes.
Compass Club has the very best
ladies in Spokane!!! The results
of the auction are in and we are
pleased to report that we made a
whopping $4,964.50.
We have so many of you to thank
for making this event a huge
success. First of all, a colossal
thank you goes to the donors
whose generous live and silent
auction items made bidding easy.
Your donations were both lovely
and enticing!
Next, a huge shout out to the
volunteers who donated your
time and talents to set up and to
make the room look lovely! We
truly appreciate you sacrificing
your afternoon for the good of the
club. We also appreciate all who
worked hard the day of the event
to keep things moving.
Last, and most importantly, to
all who spent your hard earned
money on the tangible or “tasty”
treasures……we thank you
immensely. Without you, this
level of success would not have
been possible!!
With Sincere Gratitude!!!!
Your Ways & Means Team
P.S. Many, many thanks to our
humorous Auctioneer, Kit Eckel,
for galvanizing live auction
bidding!!!

A treasured thought ... or three !
Dear Ladies,
Just a few reminders from your Treasurer.
· The Luncheon check-in table always has
a framed note that states the date, luncheon price,
Pay-to-the-order-of information, & a quick ‘blurb’
regarding our venue for that day.
· Please, please, please write a check. This
helps immensely with the reconciliation of the members who have paid
for lunch, and serves as an excellent cross reference for ensuring that
you are credited for your payment.
· A reservation made is a reservation paid. You must send in a
check for a missed luncheon if you RSVP’d yes, and did NOT cancel by
the cancellatiion date posted in each newsletter. The club is responsible
for payment of the exact number of lunches we confirm with the
caterer/restaurants. Thanks for your understanding of and compliance
with this matter.

Minutes of November Luncheon
Place: St.Thomas More Church
November 5, 2013
More than 70 members and guests braved the snowy roads to participate
in a fabulous auction. A HUGE thank you goes to Joy K. and Rita V.
for their organizational skills and “vision”. A big thank you to the many
volunteers who invested time and effort. Our thanks also to all Compass
members who contributed the wonderful items, parties and baskets that
were auctioned. This would not have been so successful without your
generosity. Thanks to our board members who made the arrangements
for the warm and cheery venue, the food and the wine...and to our
auctioneer for the charm and humor which kept the bids coming in.

Daughters Of Union Veterans of The Civil War 1861-1865 is a national

preserve genealogical records. In Spokane, support of our veterans is
perhaps our biggest project. Our Lizbeth Turner Tent #4 turned 100 in
June of 2013. Our meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at
10 a.m. at the Lidgerwood Presbyterian Church, 4449 N. Lidgerwood.
Membership is open to any woman over the age of 8 who is a lineal
descendant of a Union veteran of the Civil War.
Group members are daughters, granddaughters and great
granddaughters of honorably discharged soldiers and sailors who
served in the Union Army, Navy, or Marine Corps and Revenue Cutter
Service during the Rebellion of 1861 – 1865, and of those who died or
were killed while serving in the armed services of the Union between
April 12, 1861 and April 9, 1865.
Please visit our web site at duvcw.org for more information about our
history, projects, and goals. In Spokane, our group can be contacted at
