I'm probably not the only one! I started some herbs from seed. But, I really only need one parsley plant and one rosemary plant and one basil plant. So I've decided I will take all the extra seedlings into the Center and sell them at the front desk, with the proceeds going to the Center. Maybe some of you who are gardeners would like to do the same. Or, maybe we can hold a plant exchange later this spring to share our garden plants and raise money for the Center. There's also been some talk around the Center of trying to start a Farmer's Market this summer. Let me know if any of these ideas are something in which you'd be interested. I had another spring project idea: birdhouses. I know there are a number of Center members who are woodworkers, and maybe they would consider building birdhouses that we could sell in Classy Corner. There are a number of birdhouse plans on the Spokane Audubon Society website: www.spokaneaudubon.org/ page-280285. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who are helping to make the Center a busy, vital and interesting place for all of us. And thank you to the members who support the Center in so many ways, and make it a better place to be every day. -- Jeff Olson [email protected] 509-291-6411 From the Desk of the Executive Director Finance Committee much appreciated! '. . . and it isn't even spring . . .' although it sure feels like it around here. Aren't we the luckiest people to live in this beautiful Pacific Northwest? So, I was 'blaming' the coming of spring for my newfound hope and positive attitude. But, no, it's not that. It's the new Board of Directors Finance Committee that has me so pumped. For the first time in my tenure here, we now have an active, informed, dedicated, hard-working finance committee that is taking the financial health of the Center on as their prime project. And I'm over the moon. I have been feeling a bit lonely in that department . . . and now, there are several others watching the pot, so to speak. Thank you to Committee Chair Diana Hart, and members Rodger Regele (our new board treasurer), Bonnie McDade, Janet Baker, John Anderson, and Ray Tomlinson (our Executive Director former board treasurer) -- my new heros. -- Bonnie Seniors and the Community On the Move March 2015 5 Board Actions, Activities Sunday, April 26 / 2 to 4:30 p.m. Garden Carnival, minigolf with Sister Cities Celebrate spring with mini-golf and a garden carnival at the Southside Senior and Community Center on Sunday, April 26 from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. This indoor event features nine holes of mini-golf themed around Spokane's Sister Cities (Nishinomiya, Japan; Jilin City, China; Limerick, Ireland; Jecheon, Korea; San Luis Potisi, Mexico) which will challenge your skills as you navigate around and through cultural landmarks. And the internationally-themed finger foods include cuisine from around the world and each Sister City -prepared by Sam Song, interim director of Spokane's own Riverfront Park and a native of Quingdao, China, as well as a board member of the Sister City organization. The Spokane Sister Cities Association will have a short program featuring the plan to build a Sister Cities Garden in Riverfront Park. The cost is $25. Tickets may be purchased at the the Center. Proceeds will benefit the Spokane Sister Cities Association and the Southside Senior and Community Center. For more information cal 509-270-2603 or 509-280-3116. Your Board in action: Board reviews member dues, creates new tagline, sets membership meeting What's new? A break for couples . . . Couples, both married and those living at the same address, will get a break on their membership dues to SS&CC. The Center's Board of Directors approved a $75 couple membership fee to start March 1. Previously, all members paid $50 a year in dues. “We felt this was the right thing to do,” said Mary VanCouvering, chair of the Membership Committee. She added that other centers in Spokane already offer a couples membership fee. . . . and a fresh tagline: "Getting Better Every Day" The Communication Committee has introduced a new tagline for the Center; “Getting Better Every Day” (see this new tagline on page 1 of this newsletter). The tagline will be included in the Center's logo, and a fresh, new banner with the logo is on display behind the front desk at the Center. “The new tagline makes an important point to our members and the community that the Center is reenergized and moving forward” said Claudia Craven, chair of the Communication Committee. “The Center is a place where our members keep their bodies active and minds engaged. It's also a place where they can share their knowledge and passions, make new friends and volunteer to make an impact on the Center and our community. Together, we'll keep getting better and better every day.” Special membership meeting set for May 19 Live, Laugh & Thrive at •Enjoyouranytimediningwith30+menuchoices. •Joininthefunwithgames, music, exercise, socialhours, movies, andmore! •Staffisavailable24-hours. •Dogparkwithwaterstations •Scheduledtransportation The Board of Directors has scheduled a special membership meeting for May 19. Things we need... Volunteers are the heartbeat of the Southside Senior & Community Center. Thank you to all who give so generously of your time, energy and talent. We could not operate the Center without all of these fabulous volunteers. Each year they give over 30,000 volunteer hours to the Center. Thank you all! THANK YOU! Our Volunteers are the heart of the Southside Senior and Community Center: Jim Elliott, our new volunteer chef extraordinaire, has been busy, busy creating lunches, dinners and Monday soups for us all to enjoy. He has brought his vast experience as a professional chef to our Center members and visitors. We are so grateful to Jim for his time and expertise. The Center is always in need of items to help make our services, programs and activities even more effective. We truly appreciate every item that is donated and each item is put to very good use. ~ Now we need a 'boombox' aka CD player/radio/tape player (new or used -- but in good working order) or an IPod -- for the dedicated 'walkers' who stride around the ballroom to get some indoor exercise. Their workouts will be much more effective -- and fun -- if they can walk to exercise music and/or exercise tapes. CONGRATS! To our 'Valentine Basket o' Love' raffle winner, Margueritte Travallie. She was the lucky winner when her name was drawn during the Valentine Dinner on Friday the 13th. WELCOME NEW MEMBERS New Members Orientation and Lunch 3rd Tuesday – March 17 Time: 10:30 a.m. at the Center We look forward to meeting our new members at orientation and at our lunch at NOON. It’s a great opportunity for you to learn about the Center and all our activities. New members who plan to attend the orientation and lunch -- our guests that day -- should call the Center's Front Desk, 535-0803, to make a reservation. New members will meet Board Members and Membership Chair, Mary VanCouvering, as well as Center staff members and will learn about Center programs and events. But most importantly, they will meet other new members and be introduced at lunch. Sunday afternoon BINGO FUN!! Volunteer chef, Jim Elliott, in Center's kitchen. Thank you, too, for Carol Gabel who stepped up to the call for someone to do our bulletin boards. She has brought her creative skills along with her ability to make special decorative items to a number of events (decorating tables and walls and more) and she is now applying those to our bulletin board. Thank you, Carol. And, thank you, to the Care Bears for the much-needed rolls of stamps. March 2015 March 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29 1 to 3 p.m. at the Center Bring your daubers and a snack to share. She and her husband raised four children on a sheep ranch near the Channeled Scablands southeast of Cheney. There were basalt rock formations on their land and a marsh that was the beginning of the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge drainage area. The Bonnet House Art Museum, the $100 million+ yachts and equally extravagant mansions on Florida's Inter-coastal Waterway filled our first full day. Once settled on the ship, we cruised to Holland America's idyllic private island, Half Moon Cay, where the turquoise water was most dazzling. Grand Cayman's turtle farm and pristine seven-mile beach and the divers' dream destination, Cozumel Island, Mexico, were our next ports of call. Our final stop was Harry Truman's, Ernest Hemingway's and Jimmy Buffet's charming, history-filled paradise, Key West. Each of these ports offered something for everyone and we took advantage of it all! Life on the ship was beyond luxury. We dined, swam, sunbathed and cheered on the Seahawks on the big screen at the ship's Theater at Sea. Entertainment each day was first class, as always. The highlight was Island Magic, an amazing four-person steel drum band that blew us away as it performed like a full orchestra numbers like the William Tell Overture and other classics. The memories made on this voyage will keep us warm and last a lifetime. We'll head south to the Palouse Wind Project where you can ask a resident expert all the questions on your mind. Did you know the Palouse wind turbines are some of the most efficient wind power in the state? The turbines are most productive in the summer and fall when there is less water for hydroelectirc power. After lunch, we'll head to Pullman to tour the Schweitzer Engineering Labs. Their mission at SEL is to make electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical. They invent, design, and manufacture complete solutions for the protection, monitoring, control, automation, and metering of electrical power systems.
