Did you know that the COA has a paved walking trail located at the Lowe Center in Cassopolis? Sign up for the challenge in the Fitness Center at Lowe Center. At the end of June, one card will be drawn to win a 3-month membership to the COA Fitness Center. Fun Walking Facts 1. Walking is the most popular form of exercise in the U.S. 2. Your walking shoes should be replaced about every 500 miles. 3. Walking helps maintain strong bones. 4. No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch. 5. It reduces the risk of heart disease. 6. You use up to 200 muscles when you take a step. 2015 Senior Project Fresh The COA is hosting Senior Project Fresh again this summer. It’s time to get out and enjoy the fresh air and the sunshine. It’s also a chance to make some brand new friends. Summer brings an opportunity to volunteer at a couple of Cass County events. Dowagiac will be hosting “Summer in the City” beginning Thursday, July 16 and running through Saturday, July 18. The COA will have a table and we need friendly faces to sit and share all that is happening with those who drop by. This is a great way to tell others about the many programs and services the COA has to offer. We’ll need a good number of volunteers to help spread the word. In addition, the Cass County Fair begins on Monday, August 3 and runs through Saturday, August 8. Volunteers are needed for each day, distributing pamphlets and chatting with visitors about everything that happens at the COA. If you haven’t volunteered with us before, we can team you up with someone who can show you how it’s done. This is a great way to learn more about what the COA has to offer and to make new friends in the process. Contact Mark or Leslie at 269-4458110 to learn more about volunteering at these two big events. Volunteers listed are for the month of April, during which we had 154 active volunteers who contributed 2,526 hours of work. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, that would be equal to $55,033 in paid staff. Weaver Sponsor – Fall Fundraiser Scott Young Chemical Bank More Donors & Supporters: Enhancing Life The June 2015 Messenger 9 Senior Safety Charity Watch Donating to charities helps others and may result in a tax deduction. But with some 700,000 federally recognized charities, it pays to be cautious about who you’re giving your hard-earned money to. Even if you are conÀdent that you are giving to a legitimate charity, take your time, think through your contribution, and ask questions so that you fully understand how your donation will be used. Give generously if you are so inclined, but be careful. Here are some things to consider from the National Crime Prevention Council: Check out the charity. If you don’t recognize the name, do a little research before donating or pledging money. Ask for written information. Legitimate charities will gladly send you information. Be cautious when solicitors try to manipulate your emotions. For example, fraudulent telemarketers are especially active after a disaster. Fast-talking callers sometimes try to “guilt” you into giving money for what appears to be a worthwhile cause—but it may not be. Be wary of callers thanking you for a donation you don’t remember making. One common ploy of scammers is to call to convince you that you pledged to send a donation, but the donation hasn’t been received. If you don’t remember pledging, chances are you didn’t. Resist the urge to tell a caller anything about yourself. Unethical solicitors may use this information to try to persuade you to give. For example, if you say you are a veteran, the caller might claim to be one too and use this to pressure you. Last, if you prefer not to receive telephone solicitations ask the caller to take you of his or her list. If you are interested in the cause, request a mailing instead. Here are some important tips if you want to make a donation: 1. Donate by check whenever possible. Checks are more secure than cash, and you will have a record of your gift. 2. Keep your credit card number and personal information private unless you have initiated the call. 3. Talk with family and friends about the donation you are about to send— they may know something that you haven’t heard. 4. Ask questions. It’s your money, and you have a right to know where it’s going! This information provided by Deputy MaKenzie Kreiner, Senior Safety Coordinator. Deputy Kreiner promotes safety and protection of older adults through the COA and Cass County Sheriff’s OfÀce. Fun and safety mix for Camp Safe Kids When kids want to have fun, safety isn’t always the Àrst thing they think of. But there’s a day they can have fun, learn about safety, and enjoy lunch – all at no cost. Camp Safe Kids, a safety day camp for kids ages 9 to 11, will be Monday, June 15 at the Cass County COA from 9:30 to 4 p.m. Camp Safe Kids will cover a variety of safety topics, including Àrst aid, internet safety, abduction prevention, water safety, Àre safety and trafÀc/bike safety. The program is a cooperative effort between Penn Township Fire Department, Dowagiac Public Safety Department, Cass County Sheriff’s OfÀce, Midwest Energy, and Cass County COA.
