Challenge Yourself
One Step at a Time
Join us for the 2015 Summer Walking Challenge
during the month of June. Did you know that the
COA has a paved walking trail located at the Lowe
Center in Cassopolis? Sign up for the challenge in
the Fitness Center at Lowe Center. Beginning June
1st start walking on the trail and track your miles
with a punch card. Once you’ve Àlled up a punch
card, drop it in the box in the Fitness Center and
pick up another card. At the end of June, one card
will be drawn to win a 3-month membership to the
COA Fitness Center.
Fun Walking Facts
1. Walking is the most popular form of exercise in the U.S.
2. Your walking shoes should be replaced
about every 500 miles.
3. Walking helps
maintain
strong bones.
4. No matter how
slow you go,
you are still
lapping everybody on the
couch.
5. It reduces the
risk of heart
disease.
6. You use up to
200 muscles
when you take
a step.
2015 Senior Project Fresh
The COA is hosting Senior Project Fresh again this
summer. Project Fresh gives Cass County seniors coupons that are used like cash to buy unprocessed Michigan-grown fruits and vegetables at registered farmers
markets and roadside stands throughout the state of
Michigan.
To qualify for Senior Project Fresh through the COA
you must:
1. Live in Cass County
2. Be at least 60 years of age
3. Meet income qualiÀcations (single: income must
be under $1723, household of 2, must be under
$2333 per month)
4. Only one set of coupons per household.
If you meet these qualiÀcations, please call Cynthia
or Bonnie at the COA at 445-8110 after Tuesday June 9
to make an appointment to pick up your Project Fresh
coupons. Coupons will not be available on June 9.
Distribution is by appointment only.
Coupons will be distributed both at the Lowe Center and at Front Street Crossing. If you are unable to
come yourself and are sending someone to pick them
up on your behalf, please give your name and address
when you call so we can send out an application and
proxy sheet before your pick-up date.
Coupons are distributed by appointment only and
on a Àrst-come, Àrst-served basis.

New Volunteer Opportunities
By Mark Love, Human Resources &
Volunteer Team Leader
Summer has arrived! It’s time to get out and enjoy the fresh
air and the sunshine. It’s also a chance to make some brand
new friends. Summer brings an opportunity to volunteer at a
couple of Cass County events.
Dowagiac will be hosting “Summer in the City” beginning
Thursday, July 16 and running through Saturday, July 18. The
COA will have a table and we need friendly faces to sit and
share all that is happening with those who drop by. This is a
great way to tell others about the many programs and services
the COA has to offer. We’ll need a good number of volunteers
to help spread the word.
In addition, the Cass County Fair begins on Monday, August
3 and runs through Saturday, August 8. Volunteers are needed
for each day, distributing pamphlets and chatting with visitors
about everything that happens at the COA.
If you haven’t volunteered with us before, we can team you
up with someone who can show you how it’s done. This is a great
way to learn more about what the COA has to offer and to make
new friends in the process. Contact Mark or Leslie at 269-4458110 to learn more about volunteering at these two big events.
Volunteers listed are for the
month of April, during which
we had 154 active volunteers
who contributed 2,526 hours
of work. According to the U.S.
Department of Labor, that
would be equal to
$55,033 in paid staff.

Senior Safety Charity Watch
Donating to charities helps others and
may result in a tax
deduction. But with
some 700,000 federally
recognized charities,
it pays to be cautious
about who you’re giving your hard-earned
money to.
Even if you are
conÀdent that you are
giving to a legitimate
charity, take your
time, think through
your contribution, and
ask questions so that
you fully understand
how your donation will
be used.
Give generously if you are so inclined,
but be careful. Here are some things to
consider from the National Crime Prevention Council:
Check out the charity. If you don’t
recognize the name, do a little research
before donating or pledging money. Ask
for written information. Legitimate charities will gladly send you information.
Be cautious when solicitors try to
manipulate your emotions. For example,
fraudulent telemarketers are especially
active after a disaster. Fast-talking callers
sometimes try to “guilt” you into giving
money for what appears to be a worthwhile cause—but it may not be.
Be wary of callers thanking you for a
donation you don’t remember making.
One common ploy of scammers is to call
to convince you that you pledged to send
a donation, but the donation hasn’t
been received. If you don’t remember pledging, chances are you didn’t.
Resist the urge to tell a caller
anything about yourself. Unethical
solicitors may use this information
to try to persuade you to give. For
example, if you say you are a veteran, the caller might claim to be one
too and use this to pressure you.
Last, if you prefer not to receive
telephone solicitations ask the caller
to take you of his or her list. If you
are interested in the cause, request
a mailing instead.
Here are some important tips if
you want to make a donation:
1. Donate by check whenever possible.
Checks are more secure than cash,
and you will have a record of your
gift.
2. Keep your credit card number and
personal information private unless
you have initiated the call.
3. Talk with family and friends about
the donation you are about to send—
they may know something that you
haven’t heard.
4. Ask questions. It’s your money, and
you have a right to know where it’s
going!

Coordinator. Deputy Kreiner promotes safety
and protection of older adults through the

Fun and safety mix for

and trafÀc/bike safety.
The program is a cooperative
effort between Penn Township Fire
