ABOUT COBURN PLACE
OUR MISSION:
Coburn Place empowers victims
of intimate partner violence to
live as survivors.
A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
& OUR BOARD CHAIR
Dear Supporters,
OUR VISION:
The vision of Coburn Place is of
a world where every adult and
child may live free from intimate
partner violence, housed stably
and safely, with adequate financial resources.
OUR WORK:
Coburn Place is constantly
evolving to be a “best in class”
program and a leader in the field
of domestic violence programs.
We recognize that survivors are
the experts in their own lives
and therefore do not mandate
programming. We acknowledge
that each survivor is on their own
unique journey to immediate and
long-term safety, to emotional
and social well-being, to self-sufficiency, and to permanent
housing.
In 2014, Coburn Place joined nine other hand-selected organizations
from across the country and committed to participate in a Domestic and
Sexual Violence Cohort Demonstration Project based upon delivering
services within the Full Frame approach (http://fullframeinitiative.org/
resources/about-the-full-frame-approach-and-five-domains/) to folks
who are swimming in the “deep end of the deep end.” We were selected
because of our reputation of being a trendsetter and not being afraid or
hesitant to invest in the survivor as the expert in their own lives.
We are proud to be leading an organization that is in the forefront of serving our community and those impacted by intimate partner violence. We
are committed to our role of assisting our clients to navigate and negotiate tradeoffs and payoffs as they achieve overall well-being in their lives.
Our hopes and dreams are for a better and safer future for those that are
served by Coburn Place. Coburn Place is committed to believing for as
long as it takes so that each adult and child that we serve can achieve
safety, self-sufficiency, permanent housing, and overall well-being.
Without your belief in us, Coburn Place wouldn’t exist to offer safe and
secure housing and access to meaningful resources. Thank you for your
support, whether it is your time, your talent, your connections or financial
contributions-we truly appreciate you!
Enjoy reading the successes in 2014 that were possible because of our
fantastic community of support!
OUR FUTURE:
Coburn Place is committed to
offering advocacy and resources
to individuals and families while
they are on the wait list and to
addressing the consistent and
overwhelming need for transitional housing for survivors of
intimate partner violence in our
community. During 2014, a work
group was created to determine
what type of expansion would be
possible and able to serve the
most community members.
Believing and Achieving,
Julia Kathary

SUCCESSES
Coburn Place meets the needs of homeless, low-income survivors of domestic violence by providing them
with safe, transitional housing and comprehensive
supportive services for up to two years. During their
stay, survivors have access to comprehensive case
management and supportive programming that helps
them achieve Coburn Places’ four impact pillars:
•
•
•
•
GAINING CONFIDENCE ONE GOAL AT A TIME
Money is one of many ways abusers are able to control
their victims. When “Molly” arrived at Coburn Place, she
was on the verge of losing her car. She was far behind
on payments, had several unpaid traffic tickets and was
without insurance and legal plates. Her situation was in a
downward spiral.
Molly arrived at Coburn Place with a determination to make
her life better. She quickly found a good job, but it was far
away from her new apartment. The bus wasn’t an option; it
would only take her part way. She needed the car to keep
the job. She also needed the job to keep the car. Molly’s
advocate worked with her to create a plan of action. Her
rent-free housing allowed her to use her income toward
fixing her mistakes. Molly has successfully achieved her
goals. She was so busy doing so that it took her advocate
charting her progress to realize just how far she has come.
With her newly gained confidence, she’s ready to tackle a
new set of goals and a new role.
“AND I AM A SURVIVOR!”
Your support empowers victims of domestic violence to
live as survivors. Truly.
“Karen” takes advantage of many services your support
provides. From self-defense classes to domestic violence
support groups, she’s making the most of her opportunity.
immediate and long-term safety;
social and emotional well-being;
sustainable permanent housing; and
self-sufficiency.
She recently graduated from the “Getting Ahead” group,
which helps individuals in poverty build resources for more
prosperous lives.
Here is an excerpt from Karen’s graduation speech:
“I lived a life where I was in the fast lane with a blindfold on. I had a lot of abuse. I was stabbed, beat, I was
strangled. I eventually wound up in a coma. Drugs were
involved. I was a cocaine addict for 16 years.
Thanks to my mom, my kids weren’t involved with CPS.
She took care of them. Today, I have a relationship with
them. I have housing. I have everything a person needs to
get out of the mess I put myself into. It’s a long, hard and
slow process. It can seem like things aren’t going anywhere, but they really are. I’ve shut the door to my
past, and I’m just looking for a new life. And I am a
SURVIVOR!“
