Verb Tenses Lesson Plan
Grade Level & Subject Area: 4nd grade language arts
Standards/Framework (Common Core, NAEYC, Mid-level ….):
Common Core Standard: L4.1B- Form and use the progressive (e.g., I was walking; I
am walking; I will be walking) verb tenses.
Theme/Series of Lessons (if Not applicable, put N/A. If it is part of a series, of
lessons, tell me, give a BRIEF description of the overall and tell me where this
particular lesson fits): N/A
Time (is this a 1 day 50 minute lesson, 5 day 1 hour lesson, once a week over a
month lesson….): 45 minutes
What do the students already know? (This could be the Intro or they have learned
information before starting this lesson): Students are familiar that in different
situations you may say certain things differently. Example: if you did something
yesterday you will say you “did”, if you are doing it right now you are “doing”, and if you
are going to do it tomorrow you “will do.” At this age students usually know how to use
verb tenses properly but do not know what the reason is. This is an introduction to
identifying verb tenses.
Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish): Students will know the
difference in past, present, and future tense. They will be able to use them appropriately
when speaking and writing.
Materials:
Book of teacher’s choice. Preferably one with lots of action words.
Whiteboards
Dry erase markers
Procedure: Read class the book of choice. After finishing the book have a class
discussion about what it means for a verb to be past tense, present tense, and future
tense. Pass out a whiteboard and dry erase marker to every student. As the teacher, tell
the class a verb and have them write down on their whiteboards whether they think it is
in the past, present, or future tense. When they are finished writing have them hold up
their boards and check them. Once all students have their boards in the air, announce
the correct answer and call on a student that wishes to explain why they wrote the
answer they did. Continue doing this until you feel the class has a good understanding
and can use the verb tenses correctly. As you go along giving new words also be
creating a web on inspiration at the front of the class to track and classify all the words
the class has done and sort them by their correct tense.
Assessment (How will the students’ show you that the objective has been met):
For this lesson I will assess students’ success by the answers on their whiteboards.
This will be an activity where I can monitor their success and provide explanation when
a student is wrong. Throughout the following week I will make sure they are using
correct verb tenses in their writings and make a note to them if they are not.
A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be
Included: After reading a book to the class call out various verbs to the students. Have
them write on the whiteboards whether they think the verb is past, present, or future
tense. Create an inspiration web with all the words you used in the class as another
visual for the students.
(I should be able to see and understand your entire lesson by reading this.
Remember, Technology is not the lesson. It enhances the lesson)
