COMPLETE FESTIVAL SCHEDULE AND
PROFILES ON SOME OF THE EVENTS
AND ARTISTS THAT COMPRISE RENO’S
ANNUAL CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE | SUMMER 2011
Celebrate Artown’s sweet sixteenth
A
RTOWN HAS AN AMAZING STORY TO
TELL.
As we enter our 16th year,
we’re at a different place than
we’ve previously been. Artown is constantly
evolving. We push boundaries with the
performances and acts we bring; one look at
the World Music Series shows that with its
global presence and outreach.
This year more than ever, Artown’s
participating artists have really taken
ownership and are taking us to an entirely
new level with performances and exhibits
designed to engage, challenge and inspire.
Local artists are a vital component to
Artown and have contributed to the
festival since day one. Our July calendar
is bubbling over with local talent inspiring
an excitement and energy that’s just
spectacular.
Stretching to 32 days beginning with
Opening Night June 30 and concluding July
31, Artown is reinventing itself yet again
for its “sweet 16” with new performances,
dynamic artist influences, unique events,
expanded outreach outside the Reno city
limits and nearly 400 choices.
The arts are essential to any community
and when you set aside a weekend, or
a week, or as is Artown’s case an entire
month, just to focus on the arts, we view
it as our mission to provide value and a
respite for people seeking to be entertained.
And this July will do just that with a mix of
local, national and international talent in a
variety of art forms along with events that
are free or low-cost at a several locations.
The festival’s free events, a cornerstone
of the month’s festivities, continue to attract
thousands with a mix of local, national and
international talent and family-friendly
fare. Series during the month include
the World Music Series, Family Series,
Monday Night Music Series, Dancing in
the Park and Movies in the Park. Discover
the Arts remains a mainstay for children
6 to 12 introducing theater, dance, music,
poetry and visual arts with workshops and
performances each weekday in July.
It’s going to be one incredible month
and we hope you join us for one or many
performances and events.
We’ll see you in the park.

| SUMMER 2011
A F R O B E A T M A S T E R S make an appearance in
Reno, you can bet it’s July and our town has become
Artown. This annual celebration of the arts opens Thursday,
June 30, and goes nonstop until closing night Sunday, July 31.
“Artown is a coming together of the community to celebrate
the arts,” says Beth Macmillan, executive director of Artown.
“The sheer variety of our events ensures that everyone — from
different age groups to different cultures — can connect with
this festival.”
One festival highlight will be Fourth of July at Hawkins
Amphitheater. That evening, Pink Martini — a “little orchestra”
that crosses genres and cultures — will perform, along with
MarchFourth Marching Band.
“It will be an incredible way to spend the Fourth of July,”
Macmillan says.
Collaborative musical performances highlight the festival
mid-July, first with Doc Severinsen and the San Miguel Five.
Severinsen, along with world-class guitarist Gil Gutierrez and
three other musicians, mix guitar and trumpet for Latin, AfroLatin and gypsy jazz.
Neo-soul diva India.Arie hits the stage two days later
with Israeli musical icon Idan Raichel with their Open Door
collaboration. Combining passionate R&B and pop in an Eastmeets-West experience, the show was a late addition to the
festival but has generated a lot of buzz.
AND

ARTOWN OVERVIEW
PERLA BATALLA
7:30PM June 30 •
Wingfield Park • Free
A rich voice and poetic
lyrics set Grammy-nominated
singer and songwriter Perla
Batalla apart from the rest.
The world-class vocalist uses
her Mexican-American roots
to combine Mexican, Latin
American and Mestiza music
for a performance full of
rhythm and pure joy.
“Artistic collaborations are so
inspiring, often bringing together
diverse artists for a soul-stirring
performance. These performances
will certainly stir the soul,” Macmillan
said.
During the month of July, Artown
also caters to its younger audiences
with the Family Series, which will include the beloved larger-thanlife Hudson Vagabond Puppets, performing the Beatrix Potter tale
“Jemima the Puddle-Duck.”

La Primavera, Michele Cascella, Private Collection
“Open Door” is a stunning
collaboration between the
incomparable neo-soul
diva India.Arie with Israeli
superstar Idan Raichel. The
pair creates a cross-genre
collection of songs that are
poignantly relevant to a
global audience.
Not complete without a stunning display of dance, this year’s
Artown lineup features New York City’s Stephen Petronio
Company in “Underland” with music and lyrics by Nick Cave’s
“Murder Ballads” at Grand Sierra Resort.
The 32-day festival will close on a wonderful note, when global
music collective Playing For Change performs in Wingfield Park.
This group of musicians from around the world is on a mission
to spread peace through music, from blues and funk to jazz and
reggae, with all sorts of sounds in between. The performance takes
place the same day as Tour de Nez’s final day.
According to Macmillan, Artown continues to stretch further
into the community — both geographically and demographically
— with the help of local artists and presenters.
“They’re helping different segments of our community
experience art,” Macmillan says. “The local artists are making that
happen, and Artown is the vehicle.” ■

Artown. “When you discover a culture artistically, you get a
snapshot into that culture as a whole.”
This year, the World Music Series will include sounds from
Nigeria, Honduras, Hawaii and the exotic bayous of Louisiana.
“There’s a hunger for world music here in Reno,” says Mark

MEET THE ARTIST
NATIVE NEVADAN SEES
BEAUTY BENEATH THE SURFACE
2011 I S N E V A D A T H R O U G H A N D
— created by a Reno native, the work reflects the rich diversity
that lies beneath an austere landscape.
Artist Kelly Peyton, 23, graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in May
with a bachelor of fine arts degree. She was selected from among more than a dozen
artists to create the poster that will represent Artown on marketing materials and be
seen throughout the community, and beyond.
“I love Nevada, and I love Reno, and I was just really excited to be representing
that,” Peyton says of receiving the commission.
The work — an unassuming sagebrush whose roots entwine a joyous profusion of
color and organic form — is symbolic of the Silver State, she says.
“The sagebrush is a traditional view of Nevada — a dry plant, outsiders don’t
really see the beauty of it,” Peyton says. “Underneath the surface it’s like the beauty
of Nevada, you have to dig for it to understand the culture beneath the surface.”
For Artown Executive Director Beth Macmillan, the image speaks to the deep
roots the arts have in Reno.
“It just seemed to match what happens to the arts in this community,” she says. “It
comes from within and it bubbles to the surface.” ■

ARTOWN’S IMPACT
artown
is catalyst of change in Reno
A
1996 when
its creators decided an arts festival could bring people to
Reno’s struggling downtown.
Before Artown, locals just didn’t come downtown, says Executive
utive
Director Beth Macmillan.
“Everybody said that’s not the center of the city,”
Macmillan says of locals’ pre-Artown attitude.
“Well, they put this festival on for three weeks
and 30,000 people showed up. People were
hungry for something like this to happen.”
Sixteen years later, Reno’s downtown is now a
vibrant city center practically unrecognizable
from those earlier days. Artown now
brings in more than 300,000 attendees
during the month of July. Nearby,
families now play in the Truckee

River — an activity that was illegal when Artown
started — and take in a ballgame at the $50 million Aces
Stadium. What was once a shuttered casino is now luxury
condominiums.
“Artown was the change agent, where businesses realized
that people will come back downtown,” Macmillan says.
“In talking to the developers of the Montage, one of
the reasons they liked Reno was Artown,” says Dave
Aiazzi, Reno City Councilman and Artown board
member. The high-rise condo developers saw that
people would go — and live — downtown. “People
were going down there in summer to Wingfield Park.”
Local restaurateur Jack Lyons and his partner Josh
Polon, owners of Men Wielding Fire, have been
providing food for Artown concerts and special events
for six years. The positive exposure helped grow their
catering business, Lyons says, and now, the two have
opened a restaurant at 180 E. First St.
“We’ve been a big supporter of Artown, and
they’ve really helped us out,”
Lyons says.

National Endowment for the Arts included Artown
in its 2010 guide, highlighting the festival‘s $12 million
economic impact through dining, shopping, hotel, gaming

“Artown started for our own community in our
backyard, but tourism has followed,” Macmillan says.
“It’s really helped with rebranding Reno. People are
coming here for the arts.” ■

MICHAEL O’NEILL
O W E N T E R I N G I T S T H I R D S E A S O N , Encore is
keeping Artown top-of-mind year round.
Encore will present world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo
Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott performing with the Brazilian
guitar rhythms of the Assad Brothers, April 26, 2012 at the Grand
Sierra Resort Grand Theatre.
“There were artists not around in July we’d love to have come,”
Executive Director Beth Macmillan says of Encore’s origins. Now,
Artown brings in performers from September through May,
making the festival a nearly year-round experience.
The Yo-Yo Ma performance caps a long effort to bring the
cellist to Reno.
“I’ve been working on securing Yo-Yo Ma for two or three
years,” Macmillan says.
Dave Aiazzi, Reno city councilman and Artown board member,
credits Macmillans’ work to spread the word of Reno as an arts
destination for securing Ma.
“Because of the work she’s done in the past years, it makes
artists think Reno is a place to stop,” Aiazzi says. “I’m very proud
Reno is a place he (Ma) would like to perform. The people in Reno
deserve to see Yo-Yo Ma.” ■

it’s got to be Artown!
