During three days in early September, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about. From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight with more than 100 balloons each year. In true Virginia City spirit, the Camel Races began as a hoax. Camels were introduced to the American frontier as pack animals and were brought to the Comstock to carry salt and general supplies. As Virginia City grew and the V&T Railroad took over the chores for the area, the sometimes disagreeable and smelly animals were turned loose in the hills and eventually disappeared. Bob Richards, late editor of Lucius Beebe’s “Territorial Enterprise,” wrote a fictitious account of the city’s “Camel Races” in 1959 and followed up the next year with an editorial announcement of the upcoming races. Local residents, wise to this form of humor, which dates back to the tall tales of Mark Twain and Dan DeQuille, early “Enterprise” reporters, watched the first real race that year. 38 Other Services Street Vibrations September National Championship Air Races September Street Vibrations Motorcycle Festival is a celebration of music, metal and motorcycles. In 1964, Bill Stead organized an air race near Reno, Nevada, and the Reno National Championship Air Races were born. The event that Bill Stead started in the Nevada desert more than 47 years ago is still going strong. The event has only been interrupted once in September of 2001 when all aircraft in the United States were grounded following the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington. Held every September just north of Reno, the National Championship Air Races have become an institution for northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts from around the world. For one week, the high desert north of Reno becomes home to hundreds of aircraft, their pilots and crews. In the past ten years, the event has attracted more than 200,000 spectators and generated more than $80 million a year for the region’s economy. The event features six racing classes, a large display of static aircraft and several military and civil flight demonstrations. I Hope You Dance Gala Fundraiser September WPI’s largest fundraiser of the year is the annual I Hope You Dance gala. This fundraising event has raised over 1.8 million dollars for research and development during the past seven years since it began in 2005, allowing WPI to create the single largest onsite neuro-immune disease research program in the world. The theme of the annual gala comes from the popular song, I Hope You Dance, by Lee Ann Womack. This song is not about dancing in the literal sense, but about being able to participate fully in life. It is especially meaningful for those who are impacted by neuro-immune diseases such as ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and Gulf War illness, diseases that often cause lifelong disability and suffering. It is the dream of the institute that one day patients may be able to fully participate in all the activities and joys that life has to offer as they become well again. 39
