Dining
The Stonehouse Cafe
1907 South Arlington, Reno, NV 89503
(775) 284-3895
Price Range $5 - $40
Chef-owner Paul Abowd has a long history in the Northern Nevada restaurant
scene. Abowd still cooks nightly at this café, open since 2005. The interior
boasts a modern take on a traditional house, and there is a lovely, intimate bar,
but the real action is on the garden patio where tables are nestled among trees
and flowers. Knowledgeable and friendly servers are happy to recommend
specials not on the menu, such as the portobello mushroom en croûte with
Gruyère and Gorgonzola. The Caribbean barbecued prawns with a side of black
bean and corn salsa is another winner. Appetizers easily serve four, or make
a light meal in themselves. Entrées include a wide variety of seafood and red
meat choices, including notable steaks.
For dessert, try the strawberry shortcake. A full bar features a
fun selection of domestic and imported beers, and the wine
menu includes mainly boutique California wines with a few
imports. The restaurant is family-friendly (and dog-friendly
too, on the patio) and is a good choice for an outdoor brunch.

Libraries
University of Nevada, Reno
Completed in 2008, the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
is one of the most technologically advanced libraries in the
country. Computing and information technologies and support are combined with the latest in multimedia tools and
the resources of the University library in a physical environment designed for comfort, efficiency and collaboration.
The $75.3 million, 295,000-square-foot, five-story building
represents the University’s most ambitious capital project.
More than $22 million for the project was raised in private
donations, including a combined $10 million gift from the
Mathewson Family and International Game Technology.
Reno Main
Built in 1966, the Downtown Reno Library is a unique architectural gem serving as the urban hub of the Library System.
Architect Hewitt Wells couldn’t put the library in a park as
he wished, so the library was made as park-like as possible,
featuring hundreds of plants, several full-grown trees, and a
pond with a fountain. The curved flowing lines of the building make it a delightful place to browse or sit down with a
good book.
The centrally-located library serves the downtown residential and business community with a variety of services-public
WiFi, leisure reading, audiovisual materials including DVDs
and videos, books on CD and cassette, and computers with
Internet access. They focus on the information needs of patrons, with an extensive reference collection, a large topographic map collection, and Nevada files containing thousands of articles relating to local news and history. They also
house a federal and state government publication collection
and have a complete collection of local newspaper microfilm. An auditorium with grand piano and an art gallery on
the balcony round out the beautiful facility.

The Bruka Theater
Located on the corner of First and Virginia Streets, across the Truckee River from the Riverside Artists Lofts, and across the street
from the 10 North Virginia Plaza, in the heart of the performing arts district. This theater is cozy, and a great venue to catch
a play like Reefer Madness: the Musical. It also has an entire section devoted to Children’s Theater, and regularly holds workshops
for both adults and children. It is very active in the community and
regularly participates in downtown events such as the Wine Walk.
It has a sub-theater as well, more like a groovy lounge, where additional performances are held. If the Pioneer was ‘Broadway’ then
the Bruka would definitely be considered ‘Off-Broadway’. There’s
some amazing talent hidden in Reno, and the performances at Bruka are no different than the off-Broadway shows in NYC or L.A.
The Knitting Factory
The “Knit’s” signature sign and black theme can be seen from the Reno Arch. The
Knitting Factory brings top notch entertainment on a weekly basis. Check out
the concert schedule online at www.re.knittingfactory.com.
The venue consists of a large open concert space on the ground floor and an elevated bar and kitchen with VIP seating on the upper level. A full kitchen provides
food. The Knitting Factory closes soon after a concert ends, allowing concert goers to disperse to various afterparties throughout downtown Reno.
The Pioneer Theater
Pioneer Center is the home of our area’s most prominent performing arts organizations: the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra, Nevada Opera Association, Reno Concerts, and A.V.A. Ballet Theatre. In addition, the Pioneer hosts its own Broadway
Comes to Reno series, now in its thirteenth season. Over 150,000 people from
Reno, Sparks and rural areas throughout northern Nevada visit Pioneer Center
annually. As host to over 120 events throughout the year, from dance recitals to
Broadway productions, the Pioneer Center is a community resource that meets
a broad spectrum of cultural needs.

The Great Reno Balloon Race is the largest free hot air
ballooning event in the nation. During three days in
early September, you can look up into the Reno skies
and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about.
From its humble beginnings in 1982 with just 20 balloons, The Great Reno Balloon Race has taken flight
with more than 100 balloons each year.
In true Virginia City spirit, the Camel Races began as a
hoax. Camels were introduced to the American frontier as pack animals and were brought to the Comstock
to carry salt and general supplies. As Virginia City grew
and the V&T Railroad took over the chores for the area,
the sometimes disagreeable and smelly animals were
turned loose in the hills and eventually disappeared.
Bob Richards, late editor of Lucius Beebe’s “Territorial Enterprise,” wrote a fictitious account of the city’s
“Camel Races” in 1959 and followed up the next year
with an editorial announcement of the upcoming races. Local residents, wise to this form of humor, which
dates back to the tall tales of Mark Twain and Dan DeQuille, early “Enterprise” reporters, watched the first
real race that year.

September
Street Vibrations Motorcycle Festival is a celebration of
music, metal and motorcycles. Street Vibrations offers
tours, live entertainment, parades, ride-in shows, stunt
shows and more. This event is so big, it rocks at several
locations throughout the region. Major events are held
in Reno, Carson City and in historic Virginia City.
The National Championship Air Races is the last event
of its kind, carrying on the tradition of the Cleveland
Air Races of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. In 1964, Bill Stead
organized an air race near Reno, Nevada, and the Reno
National Championship Air Races were born. The event
that Bill Stead started in the Nevada desert more than
47 years ago is still going strong. The event has only
been interrupted once in September of 2001 when all
aircraft in the United States were grounded following
the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
Held every September just north of Reno, the National
Championship Air Races have become an institution for
northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts from around
the world. For one week, the high desert north of Reno
becomes home to hundreds of aircraft, their pilots and
crews. In the past ten years, the event has attracted
more than 200,000 spectators and generated more
than $80 million a year for the region’s economy. The
event features six racing classes, a large display of static
aircraft and several military and civil flight demonstrations.
I Hope You
Dance Gala
Fundraiser
September
WPI’s largest fundraiser of the year is the annual I Hope
You Dance gala. This fundraising event has raised over
1.8 million dollars for research and development during the past seven years since it began in 2005, allowing
WPI to create the single largest onsite neuro-immune
disease research program in the world.
The theme of the annual gala comes from the popular
song, I Hope You Dance, by Lee Ann Womack. This song
is not about dancing in the literal sense, but about being able to participate fully in life. It is especially meaningful for those who are impacted by neuro-immune
diseases such as ME/CFS, fibromyalgia and Gulf War
illness, diseases that often cause lifelong disability and
suffering. It is the dream of the institute that one day
patients may be able to fully participate in all the activities and joys that life has to offer as they become well
again.
