Crafts/Gifts for Health-Challenged Children and Adults
Books Bears and Bonnets
Helps children and adults with life-threatening illnesses - volunteers provide
and assemble gifts and cards etc. - those who are more craft-oriented can do
knitting, crocheting, sewing, etc. and others can design and write cards and

Children’s National Medical Center Dr. Bear’s Buddies
Assemble and decorate activity boxes and/or care baskets with art supplies,
cards, bubbles and toiletries etc., for patients and families. A "busy box" that
contains crayons, bubbles, coloring books, cards, books, word puzzles, small
games, and pencils helps patients fight boredom. The activity boxes can be
tailored to any age group and are especially welcome in isolation rooms. 202476-2062

Help children undergoing medical treatment who are staying at the Children’s
Inn at NIH. Make craft items to be used as treasure. During the child's stay, a

Yardwork/Spring Cleanup
Organize groups to prepare meals for those who cannot easily prepare their
own, and package them into portions and/or freeze them. Always make sure
to check in advance about allergy/sensitivity issues and food likes/dislikes.
This can be combined with friendly visits, above, if appropriate.
Spend time with health-challenged members of your community and/or frail
seniors in need of companionship. Organize small groups (3-5) to visit those
cannot easily get out into the community, or who are currently hospitalized or
in long-term care settings. Make cards/crafts to bring. Some may appreciate
gifts of food or teas, etc., if permitted by their condition – always make sure
to check in advance whether these are welcome and about allergy/sensitivity
issues. Well-behaved pets may be welcome in some cases – check in advance.
Do outdoor spring cleanup projects for members of your community who
have difficulty maintaining their yards - rake leaves, pick up debris, mow
