KWKG Executive 2010-2011
A Word from the President
Congratulations to the Kitchener-Waterloo Knitters' Guild on 25 amazing years
of inspired stitching, shared learning, and great community! I feel so proud to
be a small part of reaching and celebrating this milestone.
I sometimes imagine the Guild as a gigantic top-down sweater-in-progress.
The charter members, led by Sally Melville, cast on the first stitches -- and
(like a knitter selecting yarn, pattern, and needles) did so much to establish
the whole approach to the project. They began with a few stitches, and relatively few knitters, at the neckline. Over the years, many (many, many!) more
talented knitters have added their own stitches. Along the way, there have
been major undertakings like the Knitters' Fair and the Adjudicated Show,
which I think of as the sleeves or arms of this garment. Neither the sleeves
nor the body of the sweater are finished -- and who can say when they will
be? There are increases and decreases, thoughtfully placed to fit the sweater
to the Guild at each stage of its development, and twisting, turning cables in
places give the fabric a rich texture.
Personally, I'd love to see the sweater-that-is-the-Guild continue to grow for
many, many more years, as it reaches Technicolour Dreamcoat levels of
splendour. Every one of our members is contributing to this marvelous creation -- and for that, thank you all!
Please come out to the May meeting to celebrate with your fellow Guild members. I promise it will be memorable!
These are the people who volunteer
their time to make your Guild the
best it can be.

Programme
Our May meeting will be a 25th Anniversary celebration! There will be
membership gifts for everyone, and everyone is encouraged to bring
some party treats--sweet or savoury snacks to share (finger foods,
please!). Hot & cold drinks will be provided, so please bring a plate and
a cup or mug. In addition to our annual general meeting business, coming to the May meeting also gives you a chance to check out library
books for the entire summer, find out who won the Sally Melville Award,
and preview next fall's Knitters' Fair!

April was an exciting month with lots of books and magazines! I finally got hold
of winter & autumn issues of Keito Dama, these magazines are ordered when

more than 1 is available to save on shipping. We also got new issues of Knitters, Verena, Rowan, and Knit. Knit was formerly known as Yarn Forward, their
content remains the same, with a wide variety of sizes in their knitwear. You
can visit the Knit group on Ravelry for their reasons on the name change. The

English version of Verena is also undergoing some changes, most notably their
decision to only include only half the patterns in the magazine, and making the
remaining patterns available for online purchase. You can find out more information in the magazine and in the Verena group on Ravelry. I am a little mixed
on the Verena change, especially since the German and French versions remains

the mail that contains 6 books! The 2 knitting books have quick and cute
projects:

and the remaining 4 craft books have been donated to the raffle table. 2

books and will sending us more books in the future!
This will be my last post to the newsletter as the guild librarian. I would
like to thank all of you for putting up with my ramblings when I introduced
books at the meetings, and Ellen, Shonna, and Kathy for all their help
with the library. I will be attending guild meetings and will definitely get
there early for the library! If you are feeling a little sad that I'm moving
on, don't be! I have found the guild a real librarian (okay, so she found
me)! Kathy Matte will be managing the library next year and I know she
has a lot of ideas she can't wait to implement!
Don't forget to return your library books in May and take out new ones for
the summer! Yup, that's right, the whole summer!

Did you know: in a garter stitch project ( knit every row ), if you need to
decr. on a wrong side row, k2 tog. through the back loops, by inserting needle from right to left through 2 sts. This is much more invisible than knitting
2 tog. conventionally.

love.MADE
We are Matt and Jen. We've started love.MADE because we want to
open a space in Kitchener-Waterloo where arts, crafts and creativity
happen. We eventually see a place where handmade goods are sold,
workshops are held, groups meet and coffee is sipped at tables. For now
we have a smaller plan that we hope grows into more. We will be organizing workshops run by different artists: first up we have two knitting
workshops being planned, one for beginners and one a little more advanced. We are excited to be a part of to the Do-it-Yourself community
in the area and want to share this experience with you! Hours of operation will be Tuesdays starting April 12 from 6-9. During this time a
workshop will be running, but people are welcome to drop in and check
out the space. We will also be open Wednesdays starting April 27 from 6
-9. This will be a time for individuals, friends and groups to use our
space to work on their handmade goods, meet new people and have
great conversation! Here is our contact information:lovemade.ca, https://

Shall We Knit?
You know that old saying “I‟ve got some good news and some bad
news”? Well, we‟ve got some GREAT news and some sad news. The
great news is we are thrilled to tell you that Shall We Knit? is moving to
a new home! We have been offered a beautiful spot in Waterloo, 11
Willlow St.
It has most of the things on our wish list including a big
front porch for Knit & Chats as well as being able to pull our two locations into one. Imagine – all of the Shall We Knit? goodness in one
spot! Our last day at the shop in New Hamburg as well as our booth at
the St. Jacobs Farmers Market was Saturday, April 16th with a reopening at 11 Willow St. Waterloo sometime the beginning of May. We will
post on our website as well as send out a special newsletter once we
have the date confirmed.
